Excessively Loud Music Ruins Unique Little Bar 11/23/2010

This could be a true stand-out bar, but unfortunately it blends into the long list of take-it-or-leave-it establishments around LA. I've been to The Black Boar (even when it was called the Chalet) about a dozen times over the last five years, and every time my friends and I end up leaving after one drink. The music is WAY WAY too loud. The appeal of the place is it's ""ski lodge"" decor, dark wood beams, big fireplace, relaxed atmosphere, cool staff, and unique beers on tap. It appears like a great place to get a few drinks and talk the night away with friends. But the music is played so loud, and it's such an intimate space, that you can barely have a conversation. To compensate everyone in the place has to yell, which is not pleasant in such a small space. The music is so loud it absolutely hurts your ears and makes you want to escape. (What business does loud music have in a ski lodge anyway? The whole thing doesn't make sense.) The Black Boar could really be a fantastic bar, unfortunately the inexplicable need to have an over-the-top ""vibe"" with excessively loud music ruins the experience. more

RAD 3/31/2009

This bar has a great vibe, it always makes you feel comfortable. The size is great, you are rarely ever squished in a corner even on the most busy night, and even when the place is empty (rare) the decor makes the whole room feel more homey. This is one of my favorite local dive bars, their is always an eclectic crowd to keep people watchers interested. The only drawback is that if you came for conversation, you will probably end up a little horse by the end of the night since the music is a-l-w-a-y-s LOUD!!! Pros: Good, Stiff drinks. Awesome bar tenders- good size bar. Cons: Music is REALLY loud. more

WORST 8/28/2008

The bar is good, but the security guy is a complete jock. \r Arrogant, pushy, & mean. I wouldn't recommend going there. more

Great Local Bar; Strong Drinks 1/15/2008

The drinks are strong and the crowd is full of locals on any night of the week, but mostly crowded on Thursdays-Saturdays. Dress is very casual. more

Great Ambience, Great Staff, Excellent Times! 12/7/2007

I met up my girlfriends for a birthday drink after escaping the drunken college kid over-filled Brass Monkey on a Saturday. Coming into a loungy area and enjoying actual conversation with my friends was great. Drinks were reasonalbe, Tommy's down the street for a greasy bite to eat and a great crowd. No VIP lines, no valet... just a great bar. I loved it. This will be my new favorite spot! Pros: The Entire Bar Cons: Street Parking more

""this is my favorite neighboorhood bar. It's a good crowd, the staff is great, and the jukebox has an awesome selection. The place is also fun during the week, especially on wednesdays."" more

Weak drinks, not so friendly staff 8/7/2007

I went on a Friday nite with a group of friends and one of my friends left a tab open. Well, at the end of the nite, the bartender handed back my friend another credit card that was not hers. The bartender took no responsibility, was very dry and indifferent and she really did not seem to care. Before that, the drinks had already been a little on the weak side. The place is really small and the ceiling is low so if you're claustrophobic it's not a good place for you. The only plus side is the bouncer, he's cool! Pros: it can be cozy early on. Cons: the bar staff... more

Hardly a ""friendly"" place, so why bother? 7/21/2007

This place could take a lesson from the Bigfoot Lodge, just around the corner. In a ""local"" bar, there's a need to treat patrons with a friendly face. The bouncers were rude to some of my friends visiting from Europe. Why would they need a jerk-club bouncer in a local hole anyway? The drinks were weak, the bartenders didn't even look up at us, but it was when the bouncers started fighting with eachother that we decided to leave. The social scene might be ""cool"" for fat thirty-somethings, but if you like the Palms in Vegas, or have ever partied in Ibiza, don't even bother to attempt to get a friendly local beer at this place. Pros: no line, no cover, like a hole should be Cons: pretentious and rude bouncers and bartenders, high prices, bad drinks more

Great ambience, good drinks 6/23/2007

I love the bar with the stone wall behind it. I disagree with the last person claiming the drinks were watered down. It's a joke I have with my fiance when we over pour a drink at home to ""just pretend we're at The Chalet."" I prefer to come to this place earlier in the evening (at least before 10) so I can get a good seat at the bar. If you come too late you'll end up standing. Pros: good drinks, stone wall :) Cons: overcrowded after 10 more

Watered Down Overpriced Drinks! 12/1/2006

I recently moved to Eagle Rock and was looking forward to finding a new local watering hole. I've been to this place twice, each time with a different person, and we all agreed that the drinks are watered down. You will not get even a slight buzz off two mixed drinks. No value here at all. Crowd and ambience are okay, but who cares? I'm at a bar and I want a good drink. It fails my test. Pros: It's a bar in Eagle Rock Cons: Watered down drinks! Avoid! more

Love It (Weekdays only) 10/1/2006

Even though i've moved further away, i still visit the Chalet every chance i get... on weekdays. It's always best to get there early to get a good seat and pick your soundtrack for the evening. The jukebox is so great though, that really anyone's music picks will entertain. On the weekends it's manageable if you get there early and claim some space, but if you get there late, you'll most likely stand pressed up against others all night. Also, the bartenders are really friendly and the drinks are stiff. Pros: Jukebox, Stiff Drinks, Relaxed Cons: Crowded Weekends more

I love The Chalet 4/10/2006

I have gone serveral times to The Chalet, everyone is awesome from the Door Man to the Bartenders. It's local and the people there are down to earth, nothing like old town pasadena!! I would highly recommend this place, keep in mind it is a small place so it does get full fast!! Pros: Great People, Fast Service more

Always a winner 4/5/2006

I have been here a few times and of all the times I've gone it's been a great place to mingle. The theme is basically like Bigfoot Lodge but in a ski lodge instead. The have very roomy booths with sheek seating. The jukebox is gotta be one of the top 3 reasons to stop by this place. It basically rocks, you can hear anything from Lou Reed, Barry White, Stone Roses, YYY, to James Brown?! This is a really fun place to go to mingle, meet friends (then grab some pizza next door, very delicious & authentic) or just shoot the breeze whiile watching the crowd. I will def be here for my bday saving a booth for my buddies! Pros: Jukebox, Theme, Spacious more

Looks are deceiving... 1/16/2006

So the outside of this place wasn't that great or the parking, but it was a pretty cool place to hang out. I was there this past Friday night and yes it was busy, but I got there @ about 9:30 to walk in to a perfect seating spot for 4. The drinks were cheap, but there weren't enough bartenders to help out. All in all the music was great if your into The Killers, Radiohead, Strokes, The Bravery and such other bands. By the way...they have Pyramid Hef for all of you beer drinkers. I would definitely go again. littlecaesars13. Pros: Cheap drinks, Beautiful women, No charge to get in Cons: Parking, Old guys, Ghetto neighborhood more

LOVE IT! 6/23/2005

MY GIRLS AND I FREQUENT THIS SPOT ALL THE TIME! COLLEEN AND HANNAH (BARTENDERS) ARE GREAT... CLAY IS AWESOME TOO.. SWEETEST GUY EVER! EVERYONE THAT GOES THERE IS SUPER FRIENDLY... PEOPLE RANGE IN AGE SO THAT'S ALWAYS A GOOD THING! more

Ever wondered what a Sardine felt like? 3/8/2005

I've been to this establishment several times in the course of my illustrious life. The last time of which wasn't too pleasant. Not that there was anything particularly wrong. I'm just not too fond of being smothered by groups of guys conversing about their work days, as a few scattered thirty something females frolick amongst the patrons with a glimmer of hope that this is the night they find little Stevie a father. Last time I was here I left with my buds to go to a place that had a better male/female ratio. Never been during a weekday. But my chums tell me this is the time to go if you wish to relax. (As seating is quite scarce on a Fri/Sat) Nevertheless the staff here is quite jolly. Tis not a bad place, for what it is. Don't let my mediocre opinion sway you. Give it a try. Pros: Localized Cons: Too congested more

Lovely Apres Ski Chalet 3/7/2005

This is a lovely bar. It's warmly lit and just dark enough. The jukebox is a super cool mix of everything from punk to jazz. There's couches all over the place, so you can sit down in comfort, and there's no bottle service. I recommend sticking with simple stuff like screwdrivers b/c it's not really known as a martini bar or anything, but they are made strong enough and the bartenders are friendly. There's also no velvet rope, which is cool. Next door is Casa Bianca Pizza Pie, which makes for great late-night noshing. Pros: great atmosphere, no velvet rope, dim lighting Cons: weekend crowds, not for martinis, far away more

Wouldn't know 1/30/2005

I don't drink but will accompany friends on an occasional visit to a bar. On Saturday night, we were looking for a casual place to grab a drink after we had dinner and arrived at the Chalet around 10:30p. Nobody's outside but the door man tells us that the place is at capacity and says there's a wait. At 10:30p??? Give me a break. This is a watering hole in Eagle Rock people... spare me the attitude. Cons: attitude, attitude, attitude more
