Sew-ers Unite! 8/29/2006

Don't be fooled by the dressed up actors and the building facade - the Betsy Ross House was largely reconstructed for the Bicentennial in 1976. Regardless of how much is original, how much is recreated and how much is "of the period", the experience is a good one. Walk through the colonial house to learn more about Betsy and what her life was like when she was asked to sew a flag for our new nation (the flag that is often associated with her name is not actually the design she used as it took a while for the nation to have 13 states...and then the number jumped to 16 fairly quickly). Check out the first floor exhibit of works sewn by her descendants -- apparently the talent was passed on! Cute gift shop and frequent (free) performances in the courtyard at the entrance. There is an entry fee (minimal) and an audio guide is available. more

Alright 1/17/2006

This house is nothing spectacular. I believe it is just another way for people to make some money. It is very small land it only takes a couple of minutes to see the whole thing. I guess it is a good educational experience for children. It shows them how people live in the older days so making them feel they should be grateful what they have now. Aside from that I would not waste my time there. more

Go see the Besty Ross House. 9/11/2005

The Betsy Ross house is located in the Olde City section of Philadelphia. The house was built in 1740 and Betsy Ross resided there from 1773 to 1786. The house resembles a house, and the culture, of that time. There is a nice collection of American flags that are from the time. The house is a tourist attraction that is good for families, as well as individuals... especially those who enjoy American History. This is also a great place for a school field trip, students seem to enjoy themselves and the gift shop is quite good. more

Not the best reason to come to Philadelphia 8/17/2005

I visited Betsy Ross' house several years ago. It's one of those things where you see it, say to yourself, "OK, now I can say I saw it". It's actually just a small house downtown which historians and those fascinated by Betsy Ross would enjoy, but the average person most likely wouldn't. I can't remember if they charged admission (which they probably did), but if it was any more than a couple of dollars, I would say it really isn't worth it. more
