do they hire based on snarkiness? 2/5/2009

I have been to the tea room dozens of times over the past few years, and it is always a bittersweet experience. I keep on going because I love the tea, it's the only place I know of with violet tea, and the atmosphere is very nice. However, every single time I go, I usually go in at times when the place is nearly empty, and I have to wait about 10 minutes to even get someone to look at me! Yeah, I understand things take time, there are even signs that say ""we are not a fast food restaurant estimated wait time is 5-45 minutes"" or something very similar to that, but I think these are just disclaimers for bad service. They make tea, simple sandwiches, serve soup, scones, etc. I understand things take time when you're busy, but none of those things take 20 minutes (my usual wait time) when you are only waiting on one table. Also, they are exorbitantly priced, I think they're petit fours run about $3-$4 each or something, I bought a stale cookie for $3; I could get a fresh one at Coffee Garden for less than $2. The spinach artichoke sandwich spread is from Costco, it's not like they're even making it themselves so I don't see why it's so costly. Pros: atmosphere, great tea selection Cons: stale baked goods, loud jazz music, TERRIBLE SERVICE, rude owner, expensive mediocre food more

Incredible Food, So-So Service. 1/7/2009

Beehive Tea Room is one of my favorite sandwich places in Salt Lake City. It's also one of the only places you can get a genuinely good vegetarian sandwich. However, that being said, expect to wait. Those with little patience probably shouldn't go here. But if you have an afternoon to waste, and want some incredibly good food and tea, go to Beehive. Pros: Food, Tea, Spinach-Artichoke Sandwich Cons: So-so Service more

Terrible Service Not Worth the Ambience 10/13/2008

I laughed when I read these reviews because I have had primarily negative experiences here for the last two years. I am NOT crabby so I should give this place a fair review. Pros: Food edible. Cons: Service, Service, SERVICE! Long wait times for easy items. more

best tea in town 6/11/2008

I think people must just love to complain, because I go to the Tea Room at least once a week for lunch and I've NEVER had a bad experience! It's true that you may have to wait if they're busy, But it's worth it. What restaurant is there that you don't have to wait at? The people have always been very nice and courteous to me too. I think it's sad that only crabby people have been writing reviews. I love the Beehive Tea Room!!! Pros: Ambience, service, relaxing Cons: parking more

Long time customer has multiple bad experiences and will never return 5/27/2008

I have been going to the Bee Hive since it opened. The first year it was open I really enjoyed the place. While my attendance grew spotty because of business travel, I still loved to drop in on a weekday and catch up on paperwork or come in on a weekend with my girlfriends. However, the service has been getting so horrible in the last few years that I have decided never to return to this establishment. Previous long waits have now turned into waiting 15-20 minutes to get someone to look at you in the eye, let alone give you service. There are new signs plastered ALL OVER stating that this is not a fast food restuarant and if you can't be patient leave. I can be patient, but not for someone who is so totally rude. The staff seems sedated. They roll their eyes, don't make eye contact, most I believe are not actually able to smile, and they act like you are a nusience. Recently I took my niece and her friends (they are older teens) and spend about $60 on their food, ate with them, then moved to a seat by myself with my computer to work on my business. A staff member came out and told me, ""You have to buy something or leave."" She was so rude I was shocked. I am a grown adult! When I reminded her that I was with the group in the other room she just said ""OH"" and stared at the floor. No apology, no smile, and most importantly NO HOT WATER REFILL on my tea which was SITTING right next to me!!! Pros: Ambience? Cons: Service is so bad nothing can make this place good anymore more

Unprofessional, rude service ruins experience 5/3/2008

The food tastes ok. The ambience is quaint. The employees are rude, indifferent, and are not helpful. They say they are not a fastfood restaurant in terms of how fast their service is. However, their employees don't even have nice enough dispositions to get hired at a fast food joint. Takes over 5 minutes to get service, let alone food. Staff is mostly rude. The nice girl with lots of tattoos that used to work there is gone and we will never go back after the last 5-10 experiences have been painful! Pros: Good tea selection Cons: terrible service, staff rude, unfriendly, and wait for food is very long more

Best place for a small stress free wedding 10/28/2007

From the moment we decided to get married, my husband and I knew that we wanted to have a small family and close friends only wedding. I had seen pictures of Beehive online and fell in love with it. The day went even better than imagined. We rented the Willow Room and Library section of the tea house, though you can rent the entire place out if you wish. During the ceremony, they actually closed the shop temporarily so that we wouldn't be disturbed. The food and beverages were excellent and the staff was extremely accommodating - our beverages were always full and the food was regularly restocked. I couldn't have asked for a more charming, stress free wedding. Pros: romantic, beautiful location, awesome price, great service Cons: I wasn't able to be the typical stressed out bride more

This Diamond in the Rough has a Chip on it's Shoulder 10/18/2006

Beehive use to be my sanctuary. I would come here to relax, sip at a teapot of delicious lime and ginger or earl grey tea, perhaps have a little nibble on a plate of tea sandwiches while I read a book or wrote a story; I would buy a beautiful little tea inspired knick-knack and bags of loose-leaf tea. I recommended them to friends and family, I brought numerous people by for visits and celebrations. I even took my boyfriend here on our first date. Pros: charming place, good tea, pretty knick-knacks Cons: the service is horrible more

Great Fun for a Ladies Lunch 4/19/2006

You know, I wrote a wonderful review in April, 2006. However, my last few visits have been a disapointment because the new MALE employees have been down right rude. And, like another reviewer, the High Tea ($15.00 per person for a couple of small sandwiches, scones, and petit fours) was unavailable as I was told ""there was no one to make the sandwiches"". Well, if you are going to run a formal tea house, I highly recommend you return to your policy of making your pricey High Tea available to those of us willing to dole out the cash. I will say that the birthday party for my grand daughter, organized in advance, was very charming although I had envisioned having it in the victorian parlor instead of being locked in a small, uneventful room. Delicious clam chowder! Pros: ambiance Cons: male servers more

Couldn't Have Asked for More! 5/2/2005

As a girl who loves wonderful things, I must say this place is a gem in the middle of SLC. It's like walking onto a set of an Agatha Christie movie with big cushy couches and beautiful things to look at. Best of all, the tea is divine! The best Chai Tea I have ever had (try the Green Chai) and a fun, relaxed afternoon was had by all. The food was magnificent--those tiny lemon scones are divine! You must come...we must keep places like this going. You won't regret it. Even well behaved kids are welcome (and those tiny kid size tea-sets are darling) Pros: Atmosphere, Tea, Staff Cons: None! more
