We love bbq and eat it several times a month. We are always eager to try a new place while on vacation. Visiting from Miami , FL we had no clue where to get good bbq in Raleigh, NC. Someone at our hotel recommended Barbecue Lodge on Capital Blvd. When we arrived we were a bit skeptical because from the outside it looked like a dive. It was inside of a strip mall and parking was difficult. We pressed on though. We walked in and the decor was really drab and plain. We were seated and the waitress brought us a basket of fried hush puppies and ""corn sticks"". The hush puppies were alright, but the ""corn sticks"" were rather nasty. They didn't taste anything like corn and they were completely overdone. We ordered a bbq pork sandwich, a half bbq chicken, chicken and dumplings and a fried shrimp platter. When our meal arrived we sat stunned. The pork sandwich had no bbq sauce. It was just shredded pork on a sesame bun. The coleslaw was a dark yellow color. It is made with mustard (I've never seen this anywhere). The chicken and dumplings looked like chunks of flour and boiled chicken sitting in salted water. The bbq chicken was undercooked. The skin looked boiled. It was sitting in a puddle of orange grease. This is what they called bbq sauce. When we asked about the bizarre coleslaw the waitress basically laughed and said we should have known before we ordered that it had mustard. The only bbq sauce available was in a small bottle on the table and it didn't look or taste like any bbq sauce I have ever had. It was watery and tasted like vinegar. The fried shrimp was about the only thing that wasn't completely awful. However, it looked like something straight out of a freezer bag. The fries were also overdone and looked like Ore Rida.
Pros: Clean table, plenty of napkins, good iced tea.
Cons: Odd waitress, bad food, difficult parking
