Expert Fly Shop in Chattanooga 5/6/2010

I have lived in the Chattanooga area for two years and my experiences with Choo Choo Fly & Tackle have been great. In my two years in Chattanooga I have spent several collective days with the guide staff at the shop; I have been on the Tennessee river and the Elk river with the guide staff. I have been provided excellent professional service from the shop staff and the guides. The shop sells Sage, St. Croix, Scientific Angler, Simms, Cloudveil, Filson(one of my favorite companies), Umpqua, Rio, Smith Optics, and several more. GREAT SELECTION. The store staff has helped me with directions to local and regional fisheries, flies, apparel, and fishing knowledge. The poor reviews can be easily dismissed by stopping into the shop to pick up some new gear, get expert advice on your next outing, or reserve a private casting lesson or guided trip. Pros: Quality products, Knowledgeable and Professional Guide Staff Cons: Bathroom is used as the dressing room more

In response to a rude solicitor's review posted on 9/14/09 11/11/2009

The author (Fisher37405) of this terribly false and unfair review is not a customer. In fact, this person came by our store a few days before he posted his review without an appointment as a solicitor of a new web-based business venture. During his solicitation, he demanded to speak with our owner to sell him on his internet product. Our owner was on the phone booking a very important fishing trip with a loyal client and was not able to talk. One of the employees kindly asked for his business card and phone number, but he was reluctant to let us have either. Even though we have had a sign on our door for years that says ""No Solicitors"", he was still very adamant about speaking with the owner. We tried to handle this situaton as professionally as possible, but it is hard when the individual is unreasonable and storms out upset. Calling our hard-working owner a ""douche"" and a ""Grade A number 1 A-hole"" is childish and highly innappropriate at best. We are not only suprised to see such an immature response, but we are also very surprised this CitySearch website review portal would allow such. We wish Fisher37405 the best of luck with his venture, and we hope CitySearch would take a hard look at their review allowances. Thank you... Choo Choo Fly & Tackle Shop Staff Pros: friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff in a great fly shop Cons: dealing with rude solicitors more

Owner is a real piece of work. 9/14/2009

The owner of this place is an Grade A number 1 A-hole. I usually don't write reviews but this guy and his store holds a special place in my heart. He was rude, stayed on his cellphone the whole time. Take my advice and go somewhere else. Pros: Very cocky owner..oh sorry that is a bad thing Cons: Owner is a real douche. more

The place to go to hear tall tales and ""my fish is bigger than your fish"" 1/2/2009

If you think you know anything at all about fly fishing, they can prove you wrong, or at least try. Pros: sage rods... at least 3 in the store and a few reels plus Simms on the high end of equipment Cons: I know fisherman like to brag, but wear your waders when you go in here. more

Now this is a real fly shop!!! 12/17/2008

i left a fly shop in town the other day thinking chattanooga's fly fishing community was pathetic and awkward. but, then later i found choo choo fly & tackle and... WOW!!!... i completely changed my opinion about this town's fly fishing. shops around tn and ga have complimented this store for its reputation, and now i know why. the guys there definitely fish and know what they are talking about. i was amazed with the photos on the walls of this shop. it is obvious their anglers fish all over the world and with success. while in there, an excited angler walked in the shop wearing wet waders and quickly picked out several striper flies to buy. he was telling the fly shop owner ringing him up he was in a hurry to get back because he just broke off a huge striper below a nearby dam and the bite was on. this guy said thanks and ran back out to his truck. neither the employee nor the owner cared one bit about the water spots, gravel, and dirt left on the hardwood floor. instead, the owner yelled out the door to his customer, ""you better tie those flies to rope!!!"" now, that's my kinda fly shop!!! Pros: Knowledge, Experience, Awesome Gear Cons: More shops aren't like this one. more

kind atmosphere for the eager angler 6/24/2008

I will admit that I started out as an ""Orvis shop"" guy. However once I began to fine tune myself with the sport of flyfishing I noticed how out of tune other companies had become. Lacking in what I needed as far as performance the old shops I visited had not offered anything from rods to waders that I wanted in order to further my game. I finally fell upon the shop Choo Choo F&T and due to referral by an Orvis shop mngr. Isnt that ironic. Long story short, to feel welcome in this shop the shop has to feel welcome to you. Dont walk in and expect for Mac to bow down and teach you all he knows about fishing. He's running a business for goodness sake not a school. And customer service is not a priority if you know what you are looking for in a shop. If you dont know, kindly ask an employee for help. If they dont satisfy your needs ask Mac. The last time I was there Mac was helping a man and his son who neither seemed to know much about fly fishing yet Mac helped them the best he knew how. I have been in this shop twice knowing exactly what I needed and both times I was welcomed by the staff and appreciated for my business, not to mention ""good lucked"" on my local stream. Bottom line, you know where you do and do not belong by how you are welcomed, and you are welcomed by how you present yourself. Pros: equipment, staff Cons: an hour from my house:( more

Best Fly Shop Around 5/4/2008

Chattanooga is lucky to have Choo Choo Fly and Tackle. For a city our size, we are fortunate to have people like Mac McGee, owner of Choo Choo and world renowned fly fisherman, helping to provide us with gear to fish locally and internationally. I have booked trips all over the world through Mr. McGee?s travel service. Many of those guides were famous and only allowed bookings through people like Mac. Choo Choo is also the only fly shop in the area that offers premium fly fishing gear. I know Chattanooga has an Orvis shop, but no experienced fly fisherman buys Orvis gear. No one ever sees guides, or people fishing tournaments, with Orvis gear for a reason. I am not a blogger. I only write this in response to the previous review. The staff at Choo Choo Fly and Tackle has always been friendly to me. They obviously must be doing something right to have been around for over 30 years. As a native of Chattanooga and someone who has worked local retail, I feel that it is important that we support our longstanding shops. Pros: Experience, Helpfulness, Local Asset Cons: no website more

Terrible Customer Service 11/12/2007

There is no worse feeling than walking into a retail store as a customer only to have the people WORKING in the store look at you as if you are a beggar. This store has terrible customer service. I went in one afternoon hoping to buy a new fly rod and some other equipment needed for a trip, because I heard this was a nice store. There is no doubt that they have good equipment, but I guess that if they do not know you personally, your business is not important. Not only were they unhelpful, but some of the rudest WORKERS I have ever met. I thought that maybe I just caught a bad apple the first time I visited, however, they were just as rude and unattentive the next two times I went. I will not be back. Pros: Good Equipment Cons: Customer Service (or lack there of) more
