My 9 year old especially is more ""book smart"" than athletic. I appreciate that karate fastens his athletic ability, his discipline, and his mind. Our family was so impressed that my husband began attending classes as well. We love that this is an activity that father and sons can do together. We have a two- year old daughter and we can't wait for her to be big enough to be a ""little dragon""! Thank you Mr. Larry and AKA! more

I have been a student of Martial Arts since I was 13. I started studying Karate with Larry Bullard at the Appalachian Karate Academy in 1990. Sensei Bullard not only taught us Karate, but also shared his experiences, both good and bad and allowed us the opportunity to learn from his successes and from his mistakes. Sensei Bullard quickly became a mentor and friend to all his students passing on his love of the martial arts, zest for life, and intricate knowledge of Karate. Since leaving Boone, NC I have had the privilege to study the Martial Arts in England, Korea, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Whales, and Scotland. I have learned that whatever style you learn the principles are the same. The question is how good are your basics. Thanks to the training techniques of Sensei Bullard my abilities were recognized and praised no matter where I went. Sensei Bullard has the capability, knowledge, and desire to ensure that his students learn the very best they can and in doing so continue to be one of the very best the Martial Arts world has to offer. more

My children have progressed very nicely. They are a lot stronger and more disciplined. I am very happy with all of the instructors, they are attentive and involved. The children get the personal attention that they need to progress. I also like the opportunity to attend class 6 days a week. By the way, the spring mounted floor mat is an outstanding surface to work out on. The Dojo is a good, safe place for the children to be in. more

Scott is 5 and 1/2 and learning so much in your classes! He is improving so much in his behavior and attitudes. I am so glad that he is learning respect for teachers, as well as stranger safety. more

The staff is always courteous. The instructors take extra time to show students what they need to know. Questions and concerns are readily answered. Mr. Brewer, Chief Instructor, is especially dedicated to the kids. My son has shown tremendous discipline, focus, and confidence. He has a goal - A black belt; and he is determined to get it! He has learned that good grades are not only a reward at school. The ""Blue Star"" project helps merge home with studio learned discipline. He has learned how to be confronted and walk away with extra confidence that he can protect himself if needed. Karate is a great reinforcement! more

Our son has been coming to Appalachian Karate Academy since June of 2011. We have seen a great improvement in his confidence and his ability to defend himself. When we went from the basic club to the Black Belt Club, he improved even more. more

My boys love attending class, they love the flexibility of activities and the schedule. The classes are always different so they don't get burned out. Some weeks they attend many classes, and other weeks we can only make two classes. As a mom, I appreciate the flexibility and availability of classes. more

There is so much I want to say about Sensei Bullard that it was very hard for my to formulate my thoughts and come up with the words that could properly illustrate the respect and admiration I have for him. Larry Bullard has not only been my sensei but a more

As a former martial arts student myself, I have observed many classes at the Appalachian Karate Academy and I think their program is top notch. I have an 8 year old grand son who has been attending classes here for several months now and I feel that he enjoys it as much as I did. Many times when at home, Nicolas and I will carefully spar with one another making only light contact. We both enjoy this sparing because of personal health problems this is as close as I am able to get to enjoying the martial arts again. I would recommend the Appalachian Karate Academy to Anyone who is interested in a program that is both child and adult oriented. more

beware of owner and contract 3/9/2012

This place is a hoax. The owner gets you to sign a contract in which he has no control over. It is very binding and even states that the owner can change anything in the program when he wants and we have no say. You can not get out of the contract. The instuctors have high turn over and the instruction is awful. If you paid the $50.00 you advanced in belts but never in skill.no one was concerned with form or skill advancement. The owner.. Larry Bullard is rude and unprofessional and will call the police at the drop of a dime of you object to anything on his premise. My boys saw no advancement and begged not to go back. If you want to advance in real Karate.. this is not the place. more

There is no subtitute 9/30/2011

I have trained in various dojo's and Mr Bullards karate Academy is profession, competent and trustworthy. Not only is a highly professional karate Sensei but for decades was one of the top faculty and coaches for the Watauga County school district in Boone, N.C.. Mr bullard has taught my children and given them confidence no other person could. He has won awards across the country, influenced hundreds of people of all walks of life. He gave me the skill and protect myself and friend as we were attacked in New Orleans. He has dedicated his life to the sport and science of martial arts. He commands respect as he respects others and is a leader in this county a rare commodity in the world. If you are accepted as a student you should feel honored and with any belt that you have been awarded you will be proud as well as holding a level respected by all other karate schools. It is not a free ride to go up the ladder in his dojo as there is no substitute for what hard work can give you. more
