Excellent Sammich 3/20/2010

The sandwiches at AllStar are almost always amazing. I don't agree with how they make their Monte Cristo (I expect it deep fried) but it's still a decent sandwich. The service is pretty good, but the seating area is small and on a nice day, it can be impossible to get a seat. They do however do take out, so if you can walk or have a friend circle the block a few times while you pick up food, that's the way to go. Pros: interesting and tasty sandwiches Cons: little seating more

Amazing Sandwiches and Beer! 1/5/2010

To give you an idea of how great it is, I used to make the trip to the All Star in Inman Square Cambridge from Northeastern University while I was a student. Now I live 2 blocks away just to be in its vicinity. The perfect place for lunches, dinners and its sandwiches are a hearty cure-all for hangovers (Provided you can keep anything down). The prices are spot on for the amazing sandwiches you get, and they've got a nice selection of beer to quench your thirst. Suggestions The Extra Funky: A fried chicken breast with bean/mole sauce and a mango salsa and peppers. Get it early because they can run out of the chicken breast early in the evening. Meatloaf Sandwich: I'm not a huge meatloaf guy, but theirs is simply delectable. Chili: Simply put, I've tried all the ""best"" touted chili in the greater Boston metro area, and theirs is the best. Its Texas State style, so no beans. Served with cilantro and lime. Comes with cornbread. Pros: Best Chili in Greater Boston Metro area more

Great sandwiches but a little over-priced 1/20/2009

This Inman Square ??sandwich hall of fame?? gives deli food the star treatment. Founded by gourmet chefs Chris Schlesinger (East Coast Grill) and Jim Economides (the Blue Room), this Prospect Street landmark offers classic sandwiches and regional specialties from across the country. Timeless favorites include the BLT packed with sweet applewood-smoked bacon and herb mayo; and the Reuben loaded with smoky corned beef, salty sauerkraut and slathered with chipotle Russian dressing. Regional specialties include Buffalo?s famous Beef on Weck -- juicy roast beef with horseradish and au jus dipping sauce; and a New Orleans muffuletta -- salami, ham, provolone with red-onion chutney and their famous Inner Beauty hot hot sauce. The sides are superstars as well, including the Texas State Pen chili, the Gravy Fries, and perfect tangy sweet coleslaw. They also give you free Oreos while waiting for your order. Even though it?s a little pricey, if you have a taste for a great hero, go to the professionals at All Star Sandwich Bar. more

Wild and tasty sandwiches 5/17/2008

We went there Thursday night and closed the place down. Their sandwiches are wild and tasty. We started with some excellent onion rings and some local beer. I had the black pastrami reuben, damn fine sandwich. Other favorites were the spicy meatloaf sandwich and the texas brisket sandwich. We're from Texas and know great brisket. Don't go for ambiance, go for great food. Delicious! Pros: Excellent food Cons: Don't go for ambiance more

Unique Twists on Classic Sandwiches and More 9/18/2007

I have always been pleased with all my sandwiches from All Star Sandwich Bar. The rye for the Reuben and sourdough for the Rachel were grilled/toasted/pressed perfectly. The portions are satisfying, and the sandwiches come with cole slaw and a pickle. The gobbler (aka Day After Thanksgiving) uses apple-sausage stuffing so it has a hint of sweetness, but I would like it better if it was served warm. Beef on Weck comes on a nice salty role and the Real Au Jus is light and not overpowering. The fries are hand-cut and fresh. The service is always pleasant, and whenever we are leaving someone from behind the counter always tells us to have a good day and grab some free oreos. I am really a fan of them updating their specials online; how great would it be if every place did this. My only complaint is the steak chili is very oily, soupy, and spices didn't really blend. What a mad house!!!! 7/11/2007

So went on a Wednesday during lunch hour cause it looked popular. The place was packed- no seats except the bar. The Ruben was delicious but the service was too crazy. First I went to the counter cause it seems like the type of place you make an order, but no, the lady tells me to take a seat so she can wait on me. I tell her I already know what I want when I sit, but she still insists on getting me a menu and then tells me that the other guy will take my order. I wait another couple of minutes watching the chaos until he comes to me. The food came fast which is great, but getting the check is another issue. There seems to be no organization to the place. The same people who take orders at the counter, clean off the tables, reseat people, etc. I watched a few people leave because no one waited on them to seat them. Food options are plentiful and food (so far) is great- but a big suggestion would be to cut the ""wait staff"" option and make it an order at the bar and sit down option. Maybe give people a number stand when they order so that the waiter can bring it to them or something. They should also make it a ""clean your own table off"" place because with all the rushing around they can't clean a table off fast enough to seat the clientele. Or maybe they just need a busboy. Pros: Good food, average price $10 lunch, fast service Cons: Smoky, unorganized, oddly set up more

Great sandwiches in a great environment! 5/19/2007

I'll keep the review simple. Come here and revel in a great all-around experience. From the friendly greetings from virtually every worker as we walked in on a very busy Saturday afternoon, to the expansive menu full of sandwiches we wanted to try, to the amazing lunch, this place really stands out. They may have the best corned beef reuben in Boston, and their take on falafel within a sandwich was somewhat original and well-executed. The corned beef had just the right amount of fat, and the bread was toasted to give the right amount of crunch to complement the juicy meat in the Reuben. The fresh veggies on the falafel sandwich were refreshing next to the crunchy outside/soft inside falafel. Lots of fresh flavors. Of course, I might just be smitten by the rich poutine (fries w/ gravy and cheese curds) which really rounded out our meal. Service is always an important component of a meal, and All Star Sandwich Cafe didn't disappoint. Really nice and efficient workers got our food to us right away but reassured us that they weren't rushing us. A LOT of restaurants could learn from this place! Yum! Quite possibly the best sandwich shop in Boston/Cambridge. Pros: Great selection of sandwiches, friendly staff, amazing fries Cons: Not a lot of parking in Inman Sq.. Customers near us were rude. more
