I have used my cell phone as my primary service for the last several months. I had a land line but was spending close to $80 a month, plus the cost of my cell. The problem is, I live out in the boonies, between two small towns. I was given a Pryor phone number which meant that everywhere but Pryor and another VERY small town is long distance. I live as close to Claremore, but Claremore was long distance for me. If I had a Claremore number, I could call Tulsa, where I work, Sperry, where my mom lives, Skiatook, where my very good friend lives and hundreds of other people. I called AT&T to see if I could get a Claremore number. The person I talked to said she couldn't answer that question until I answered a lot of questions, including where I worked, my social security number etc. After several minutes of answering her questions, I asked again if I could get a Claremore number. She got real snooty and said that since I previously had a Pryor number, I would have to use my old number. She then asked me what long distance carrier I wanted and offered me the same ridiculous plan I had before. I hadn't even decided to go ahead with the land line. I told her I didn't want long distance. She was incredulous and got even ruder. I hung up at that time. I guess since AT&T basically monopolizes this area, they can treat people any way they want. For me, I'll stick with my cell phone. more
