Lawrence, MA doesn't have much to offer if you aren't in the mood for pizza or subs. As I gleaned through the internet for restaurants in our hotel room I came across Cafe Azteca. I had no idea what we were in for as we drove there and I was a bit concerned over the neighborhood. I knew though we were in for something special when there was a line leading outside of the door onto the sidewalk on a weekday evening at almost eight o'clock. \r \r We were warmly greeted and the hostess apologized about a half hour wait but she seated us at the bar where we enjoyed a generous glass of Mondavi Cabernet. The decor took us thousands of miles away and the flutter of activity was very energizing, it is always a positive sign to see smiles and laughter from the wait staff. We were seated at a comfortable table and the artwork, murals, and yes, literary work splayed across the cozy dining area. We were treated by the best tortilla chips and salsa we've ever tasted, very fresh and a perfect compliment to the wine. Our server took our orders, I chose the tamales de puerco and my husband chose the carne burrito. We noticed that there was a conspicuous absence of condiments at the table and we soon found out why -- none are needed! Our meals arrived, generous portions too. My tamales were perfection in a rich chile infused sauce that was perfectly measured our preventing the tamales from becoming too soggy. The pork was slow cooked and tender. The rice and beans, the usual side dishes, were delicious compliments. My husband's burrito was just as good, nothing soggy yet apparent was the time taken in presentation and perfect flavors blended for a splendid dish. Despite the portions we'd normally split for a couple of meals, it was too good to stop. Our plates were cleaned up! The food was so good it is capable of making you cry, it was the best authentic Mexican food I've had in decades. Our waitress was genuinely friendly and attentive. The co-owner of the restaurant swept through making sure that everything was okay and she chatted affably with everyone in the dining area. \r \r We packed a lot into our vacation but this dining experience was truely one of our highlights. We went back the next night. There's a real gem in Lawrence, MA and it's called Cafe Azteca.
