BestBank survival guide:\r
\r
Bestbank is an odd one. When I signed up for 3 free checking accounts, I asked them how they make money.\r
I asked if they made loans. They said no.\r
I went to their website and sure enough they don't offer loans.\r
They make their money in fees when you overdraft your account.Or when you don't read the rules very well.\r
They do stretch out deposit times and they don't forgive much when you screw up. Living on fees, they really can't.\r
So if you are a person who lives near the monetary edge with your bank you probably aren't going to have a good time at Bestbank. Especially if you compound that with automatic drafts of any kind.\r
\r
Knowing that, here is my advice to having a relatively decent time with this bank:\r
\r
#1 Don't overdraft (ever). When you get below $100 bal, add some.\r
\r
#2 Allow up to 7 days for deposits unless they are cash. Cash is the only way you get immediate deposit credit and do it in person at the counter, not through any machine.\r
\r
#3 If you do overdraw, do what I call ""Power Fixing"" it.\r
Don't just stuff close to what you anticipate you will need to cover the overdraft and one or two fees. Add at least $100 more than you imagine to get ahead of the fees and things that will be chasing you if you cut it too close. Surprise is a bad thing here. You can always pull it back out once the dust settles.\r
\r
#4 Don't use any service features beyond the debit card. Don't use ATMs and don't sign up for misleading protection services. Keep it simple... well endowed free checking with one debit card and limit auto-drafts.\r
\r
#5 Make diligent use of their online account management system. It can be off line some days but usually not more than half a day. You will be amazed what happens when you don't watch your stuff. Kind of like driving a bus down a mountain road with a blindfold on.\r
\r
#6 Don't get upset with the level of employees they staff the locations with. Remember mama is in Wisconsin and these are not full service banks. They like to visit and talk while you wait sometimes. \r
\r
That said, the convenience they offer is outstanding if you watch the stuff I mentioned above. If so, you should have few problems. I've been using them for the past 2 years without a problem except I over-drafted once but I already knew to use cash, in person and quickly to make the ""Power Fix"" deposit.\r
\r
Remember they only have fees to pay for their brick and mortar presence. It's not too hard to figure out. You just have to understand the animal to keep from being bitten.\r
\r
BTW, ""real"" banks are just as bad or worse, IMO. Ain't none of them going to heaven.\r
