Review content:
I feel the other review is slightly unfair. I work in Manhattan, but also happen to live upstate. You can't fairly compare restaurants in a rural area against those in the city. The bottom line is if you would like to experience a calm break from the norm w/very nice unique food & wonderful genuine service- then go to the Iron Forge Inn.\r Located about an hour+ from NYC, you'll find a beautiful scenic mountainous area w/lakes, farms, wildflowers & country roads. Down a quiet road you'll find the Iron Forge Inn which is really an old landmark house turned restaurant/bar. It has charming wood built ins, working wood burning fireplaces & antique details- down to the original & not perfectly straight hardwood floor. In nice weather, you can eat out in the private gazebo & enjoy great views.\r I went for my anniversary. They started us w/a complimentary seasonal hordevour the chef created using local ingredients. The menu is actually sophistaicated for what you would expect to find upstate (See it online on their website). The courses are served well timed & tempered. Several staff Including the Owner check on you throughout your meal to be sure you have everything you need. No need to wait for that ""1 waiter."" The staff are genuinely kind & professional & made the expereince great (& I'm not easily impressed being a manager in a 5 star establishment). The food was made w/creative ingredient combinations. I was expecting it to be served casually, but it was actually fancifully presented. Some of it was great, some good, but nothing ""bad."" I'll definately go back. The old fashioned charm brought me back to a simpler time & made me relax & forget my modern woes. At the same time it was not so simple that I felt gypped. I was pleased w/the fine service & impressed by the chefs choices in the menu. The bill was fair; not too high, not too low. We left a big tip because it was well deserved. JTB Pros: Warm environment, great staff, creative menu Cons: A little hard to find if you dont live local or have GPS!
