I bought a Tiffany Style Lampshade for my mother for christmas. I asked the owner if for any reason if my mother did not like it would we be able to return or exchange. He said absolutely no problem. When we ended up back in the store because of the color, they had a very limited selection of tiffany lampshades and therefore we had to return it. This is when he decided to tell me that he would be charging me a 20% fee for the return OR I could get an in store credit for the full amount. No where in the store was there a return/exchange policy posted, nor was it on the back of the receipt, and he had plenty of opportunities (when I asked him directly) if there would be any issues to let me know said policy. I told him this, and then he asked me if 10% would be okay, of course I said No it would not, but payed it anyways, because I didn't have the time at the moment to argue and NEEDED the money back in my account. THEN it took 5 full business days for the $225 to go back into my checking account. I prefer to go to smaller business owners over Home Depots or Lowes, even if the product may cost a little more, but when you are treated in such a manner, why would I?
