Review content:
I'm in my late twenties and recently went to the dermatologist for the first time. I didn't have any particular concerns or skin issues, but am a firm believer in preventive medicine and figured I'm at about the right age to start keeping track of my skin more carefully.
During my visit the doctor identified a small mole that she felt needed to be removed and biopsied for precautions. The procedure took less than five minutes and was relatively painless. One week later the NP called with my pathology report and to schedule a follow up appointment. While I will need a simple follow up procedure, I was fortunate to learn there were no major issues.
However, given that this was my first visit to the dermatologist AND that I am learning about this type of health care for the first time, I was looking for a bit more explanation as to a specific diagnosis and what to expect moving forward. When I called back to speak with the Dr. Sherman directly, I was told she didn't have time and did not call patients directly. ...The LAST thing a patient wants to hear. While I appreciate the extremely busy schedule kept by providers, I find it insulting and unacceptable when a doctor can't schedule an hour of their day to return calls to patients. Health care is not meant to be impersonal, and when you stop treating the PERSON, you've missed the point of your profession - not to mention your responsibility to your patients.
The saving grace for Northeast Dermatology was the nurse that I spoke with; Kathleen. In a five to ten minute conversation Kathleen was able to give me every bit of information I was looking for and sooth any concerns that were lingering. She took the extra five minutes to TAKE CARE of her patients and for me, that made all the difference in the world.
Dr. Sherman is lucky to have Kathleen on staff - had I not been able to connect with her today, I most certainly would not have returned to this office, and would have warned friends to be weary and perhaps go elsewhere.
Pros: Kathleen, NP was exceptional
Cons: MD lacked bedside manner and time for patients
