I tried New Image Salon as a more ""local"" alternative to my prior stylist, who had recently moved out of country. I have short, thick Asian hair that spikes up if cut too short (as most Asian male hair does). When I called to make an appointment, I was given a rate of $25 for a man's hair cut. The price was reasonable as my former stylist charged $40 - $50.\r

When I arrived for my appointment, I was serviced by a woman whom I assumed was the owner of the establishment. She asked me for what I wanted and I was very specific. In the middle of my explanation, she interrupted me to explain that she knows what to do, justifying her interruption with her many years of experience. She even took out an advertisement of her former salon as proof. I know when to step back and let an ""artist"" do their work so I let her be. \r

Near the beginning of the cut, the stylist tried a bait-and-switch by proclaiming my hair cut to be $50, as the rate was $25 and up. Of course, as she had already started cutting my hair, I could not just leave. I protested, but tried not to be rude, specifying that I would not want to insult the stylist by paying below market rate. Fortunately, she acquiesced and I ended up paying $25 plus a $5 tip. \r

Many times, she sensed my apprehension and asked me specific questions on length or style. I tried explaining the best I could but I knew she was not happy with my explanations. At certain points, she grew agitated. In the middle of the cut, she even suggested I try a nearby Asian salon so I can get my hair cut by other Chinese people. I'm not sure if her suggestion was meant to be helpful or hurtful, but I thought this subtle hint of racism was unnecessary, and especially in the middle of the cut. Other times, she spoke her native tongue to her receptionist in what I assumed was a mocking tone.\r

I would not recommend this salon. Overall, my haircut was average at best and the service was sub-par.
