Went on the Surprise Glacier tour out of Whittier on a day trip from Anchorage. Even though the weather was not the best the trip was great! Driving through the Whittier tunnel is fun, the little town is friendly and easy to walk around and Major Marine's tour was great! We cruised by a salmon hatchery where we saw fish jumping in the hatchery pools and fishing boats pulling in full nets. We saw groups sea otters, harbor seals resting on blocks of ice and sea lions on the beach. Barry Arm is full of glaciers and the Surprise Glacier was great! The captain turned off the boat and we sat at the glacier for almost 30 mins, listening to the popping and cracking and watching the huge chunks of ice fall into the water. On the way back to town we saw three orcas close by the boat. The ranger guide on the boat was so informative, and even though our group was all adults he gave us ""junior ranger"" workbooks and we learned a lot. We had the salmon & buffet meal which was delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked, the salad dressing was yummy, we were able to choose our cuts of the prime rib, dessert was tasty and we were able to go back for 2nds (and 3rds!). I would whole heartedly suggest this company for a trip from Whittier any day! Don't miss it.
