Santa Monica?s Co-opportunity is more than just a grocer; it?s a community. In fact, as its name suggests, the store is a co-op. This means that it?s owned by members who pay an annual fee in exchange for certain benefits. In addition to receiving left-over profits, members serve on the Board of Directors, get special deals on food, and receive discounts on services from other members. They also really know each other, which was evident by the constant stop-and-chats we witnessed during our visit. Luckily, you need not to be a member in order to shop (or take part in good conversation) here. As its name also implies, Co-opportunity is a socially and environmentally conscious business. Most of its food is organic and locally-produced. It offers a wide array of items for those with special dietary needs (macrobiotics, wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy and lactose free, raw food, vegetarian and vega, and GMO-free). It also has a nice vitamin and cosmetic department with homeopathic and cruelty-free items. Best of all, the prices are relatively low, especially when it comes to the fresh produce. And, it makes Co-opportunity a great choice for all shoppers. @thelagourmet
