Modern Bookstore was located in a very old store front building at 3118 S Halsted, former home of a Lithuanian workers society -- right out of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle,
It closed about 10 years ago when the lot was taken by the city under eminent domain so the new police station could be built there. Jane Finder, president of the little corporation that ran the store, passed away. Others who worked and volunteered there took other jobs.
It is very hard to keep a small business going in the present economic situation with so many unemployed. But even so we would love to re-open the store in the neighborhood. We look forward to that day.
