I needed to smog a vehicle to transfer ownership. I came on CitySearch to find a reputable shop with reasonable rates. While I tried to make my decision, I saw a link to smogtips com which advertised coupons for smog tests. I went on their site and after entering my zipcode, I was directed to California Test Only to utilize a $25 coupon. I called California Test Only to determine what their smog test fee was for my vehicle. I didn't mention the coupon. I was quoted $50 over the phone. That savings made it worth my while to drive the extra 10 miles to their shop. When I arrived I requested a smog test and presented the coupon. I was told the fee would be $50. I asked her to explain the discrepancy, and was told that the price I was quoted over the phone was the phone inquiry special and the regular price is $75. She added that of course they couldn't do smog tests for $25!! What a scam. I left and had the smog test done at USA Lube and Auto Care on Mission Avenue for $42. No hidden fees and no bait and switch.
