UPDATE: WCFC's website is now located at www.westsidechapeljax.com I knew WCFC was an incredible church the very first time I went there. I had visited plenty of other churches--mostly Baptist, and other non-denominational churches--that were nice enough. A rare few had just-okay preaching, but nearly all the preaching seemed shallow, the music either put you to sleep or made you feel like the musicians were putting on a show, and often you felt like if you weren't wearing a fancy dress or suit and tie that you were being looked down upon. This couldn't be further from the case at WCFC. The most impressive thing about WCFC is the preaching. Dr. Ken Mitchell is absolutely wonderful at analyzing the Bible passage and explaining it to the congregation. He preaches in the expository style, which means that he basically goes through one Book of the Bible at a time, choosing a few verses each week to study intensely. This does not lead to shallow preaching, but Ken is so good at explaining even the hardest things that it's never hard to understand. If nothing else, come here for the preaching. The music is also fantastic. They have a worship team that includes several male and female vocalists, many of which also play instruments. We always have a piano, keyboard, at least one acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a bass guitar, and drums. We also often a recorder, a violin, and a trumpet or two. Many of you may be worried that the drums and electric guitar make things really rocky and not worshipful, but I assure you that's not true. However, neither is the music boring. The harmonies and the instruments blend so well that it's really just beautiful and gets you focused on God's greatness or on the passage that Ken will be preaching on. The songs are a mix of hymns and newer songs, all of which glorify God. As far as dress goes, at WCFC some people do wear suits and dresses, but most wear khakis or pants like that and many wear jeans and often shorts. And no one could care any less. WCFC is located on the eastern end of the Riverside Village Shopping Center (don't let that fool you--the pastor's wife is an interior designer and the inside is just lovely!) between Blanding and Hamilton and just north of San Juan Ave. (It's very close to the intersection of San Juan Ave. and Roosevelt/17.) Come join us--you won't be disappointed!
