Review content:
We visited the Blue Owl on a Saturday afternoon. Our party of 2 had to wait for about 15 minutes, which was fine. We expected that after finding out that Kimmswick really doesn't have many places to eat and all the hype from Food Network visit. We were GREATLY disappointed. We had the Saturday special, which was a Chicken Fried Steak, veggies, mashed potatoes, and bread, and a salad. The salad was unusual (pineapple coleslaw). The main plate was dismal. The chicken fried steak was ok but small (compared to other St. Louis area restaurants), the grean beans were out of a can with a bit of fried bacon, but the worst was the INSTANT mashed potatoes!!! Instant mashed potatoes at a County restaurant!! The biscuits were so dry you had to choke them down with your drink. The gravy on the chicken fried steak was the best part of the meal. The daily special never changes (according to the menu) and yet the price wasn't listed. We didn't expect to pay $11.50 ! Even the dessert was disappointing. We ordered two different pies. Their ""famous high piled apple pie"" was tough crusted with only half of the pie being filled with apples. The strawberry rhurbarb had a pasty doughy crust. For an establishment with as much built up and having 75 staff, they need to start over. Very disappointed in the quality, flavor of the food, and value for money. I felt it was nothing more than a tourist trap given the limited options otherwise to eat in the town. I'd eat somewhere in St. Louis then visit Kimmswick. Pros: visiting somewhere someone famous has been? Cons: Not value for money, touristy
