Review content:
Good: You truly do learn a lot about alcohol, being a bartender & how to actually mix drinks. Instructors are very helpful & personable. Once you've finished, you can always go back & practice mixing drinks. The course itself is fun.
Reality: They APPEAR to promise job placement & skirt around seeming to guarantee it. They tout this as the main difference from other bar schools. 95% of the students looking for a bar job won't get any kind of placement. They have no contracts with bars/clubs as far as supplying real jobs (the only thing that comes close are the 'practice bars' that let you bartend an hour w/no pay). They rarely get private parties, then farm most out to 'safeties' who took the class years back, that they know they can depend on. Job listings on their site are copied straight from Craigslist (Food/Bev/Hosp section).
Bad: Bars don't take bartending school seriously. You'll have better luck if you DON'T include it on your resume. The counselor (who usually has little to no bartending experience) will give you resume formatting tips, tell you to add a picture & tell you lie. They'll go so far as to list bars that have recently closed, so that 'experience' can't be checked by a potential employer.
Shady: 95% of reviews on this site are posted by the school. After you take the final test, you fill out a survey on paper. They post them here a few at a time so it's not too obvious. There are far fewer people that took the time to post than it seems. They ARE real reviews, but used rather deceivingly.
It's a lot of money to shell out. If you just want to take it for fun, go for it. If you want to be a real bartender, I'd only suggest it for the practice at mixing and memorizing drinks. DO NOT expect REAL help with placement, you ultimately have to depend on yourself only - your confidence & ability to be friendly. While they admit this (AFTER the course), NYBS advertises the course as a safety net/fallback as far as a job - completely untrue.
