For more than twenty years I've sampled bagels from around the country, for several of those as a young person living in New York and for ten of those professionally checking the bagel-baking competition. I have to say I still rank Humble Bagels as some of the best.
Bagels are supposed to be chewy. Supposed to be glossy. Supposed to be vehicles for transporting sweet and savory toppings into our mouths. Humble Bagels do this really well. Bagels are not supposed to be bread filled with things like chocolate chips or puffy white-bread pieces of dough that got spritzed with water before they went into the oven.
Fresh from the oven Humble Bagels can't be beat. But I've also packed 'em on flights, into lunch boxes, and shipped them thousands of miles. The Humble Bagel will hold up, and I've enjoyed many without a single topping. And they are good even after sitting in the freezer for a while -- just heat 'em up and there you go!
Over the years the bakery has expanded the product line and added deli service. After 30 years in business Humble Bagel challah is still some of the best Eugene has to offer. One of their cappucino or marionberry muffins may be something like 1500 calories, but I don't care...they are so good! Many of the cookies and other baked goods are way too big for one rational person to eat in a sitting...so I'm not always rational...
The only remaining location is their original (at 24th and Hilyard by Roosevelt Middle School.) Sad that the UofO campus and Sheldon shopping area have lost those locations, but Humble Bagels can still be found in many local grocery stores, delis and coffee stops. At the bakery itself, lunch hours can be crazy with many students, and early weekend mornings are also very busy.
Disclaimer - I worked here for many years, and still have family & friends who work at this bakery...so maybe I am biased...and maybe this title used to be one of their advertising tag lines...just try the bagels...I think you'll enjoy!
