""OLD "" is the key word--Snow Camp location 10/13/2010

I cant even give this place ONe star- The food was ---AWFUL---literally awful--everything was dried up, distasteful and old and had been sitting out for hours(for real). I would literally not even take my dog to eat here. And the food made me and my 2 sisters sick for a day and a half. I'm trying to be nice and treat my family to a nice meal and they end up getting sick. The chicken was dry, the liver was like beef jerky, the macaroni was dried out and stuck to the pan and looked like it had been played in. The vegetables were swimming in water with no flavor. The salad bar was not cold or fresh. All the ice cream was gone out of the machine and they did not even bother to refill it so the kids could have ice cream. All the desserts were uncovered and dried out also and tasted like cardboard. The cook came out front looking like he had just finish driving a truck instead of cooking food. ANd the thing is--if they really cared about the impression that they were trying to make they would have immediately started to put fresh food on the buffet. But they waited until we were about to leave to start to put out fresh food. We were there on Sunday and it looked like food left out from Friday. Now I can say the waitress we had was very nice. But I could tell they weren't use to ""our kind"" eating there. Because a caucasian couple came in and the girl said and I quote..""I don't want to sit right here""; which was near us; and my sister said--""You can have it""..lol. A restaurant and people like that are better left to themselves. And one customer like me--with a bad experience and a story to tell can do alot of damage. Best wishes ""Ye Old Country Buffet"" Snow Camp more

oh so bad 2/28/2010

I am so glad my friends could not make it with us last night, for I would have been very embarassed after all the talk up I did about this place.\r It had been about a year since our last visit, and I was excited to return. My family and I left our house around 5:00 P.M. on Saturday and arrived at 5:40.. yes, a good drive for us, but a pleasant one. We were seated promptly and our server arrived and got our drink order. My son and I wasted no time and walked into the buffet room, this is when it went all downhill. There was NO fried chicken at this time, only some dried up tenders. There was NO fish, NO bread or bisquits, or rolls. All there was was some dried up beef ribs. The mac and cheese was like soup, and when I stirred up the black eyed peas I found another spoon at the bottom of the pan!! So my initial plate was 1 dry tender, some corn, good, and some green beans. The server came by with some tarter sauce and I asked her what was that for and she said the fish, which I replied, "" there is none"". She said they were frying more. After 10 minutes or so some fresh chicken and fish arrived. The one breast I got was delicious, but nothing else was replenished at all! All there was for dessert was terrible banana pudding and 2 individual plates of something that I had no idea what it was. I asked if there was any dessert coming and she no, they were out, there is banana pudding and some strawberry cobbler, which i forgot to mention was almost gone and dried to a crisp. She did take 1 of the pies from out front which was for sale and cut it for us and another table near us. I heard from at least 3 other tables that they as well were so disappointed with their meal and that the place has gone downhill. \r I have been in the restaurant business all my life and I know as well as anyone, how hard this job is, so I really pick my battles with any negative reviews, but I had to vent on this one, for it was horrible... I wil not return!\r Pros: good tea? Cons: Food was unavailable more

Disappointing, Unacceptable Experience 7/10/2009

Ye Old Country Kitchen was a real disappointment. In fact, this was one of the overall worst experiences I can remember having in a restaurant. \r \r We and the table next to us waited 20 minutes for our orders to be taken, but not before I had to go up front and notify the hostess that we weren't being attended to. Upon ordering drinks, we were advised that they were out of any type of diet drink.\r \r Food arrived fairly promptly after ordering. It was OK, except my wife ordered a BLT with mustard instead of mayonnaise, and the sandwich arrived with a TON of mayo. I had chopped barbecue that had good flavor but tough in places. The fries were OK; however, we soon discovered that there was almost no ketchup left IN THE ENTIRE PLACE.\r \r To top it off, we were attending the outdoor play next door, which started at 8:00. We waited 15 minutes after concluding the meal and we still did not have our check; the waitress hadn’t been back by the table. Once she was located, it was discovered that our check had been lost and each item we had ordered had to be listed again on a new check, which took more time. We got in the car to leave at 7:55. We barely had time to get parked, buy tickets and get in our seats for the drama, after being seated at 6:35 for dinner.\r \r I really wanted to like this place. The decor is nice with a good collection of nostalgic items on the walls. With normal service and adequate beverages and condiments, it probably would have been OK. But when you have this many unacceptable things happen in one night, you have to wonder what is going on with the place. I have been trying to recall the last time I had a total restaurant experience this unsatisfactory, and I still haven't been able to come up with anything.\r \r In fairness, the folks next to us said this wasn’t normal. Maybe not—there did seem to be many locals there. Unfortunately, I probably will never know if Ye Old Country Kitchen usually does better. I'll never be able to get my family back in there. \r Pros: Location (if attending outdoor drama next door), inexpensive Cons: Slow and substandard service, outages of condiments/drinks more

Expectations for Ye Olde Country Kitchen in Snow camp 12/28/2008

The food at Ye Olde Country Kitchen in Snow camp was simply not very good. We got there at 5:30 on a Saturday night (the buffet price goes up considerably after five, but we wanted the best they had). All there was seemed tp be less expensive lunch time left overs. The fried chicken was mushy and fishy tasting. The roast pork was dry and sweet, like it had been basted with sugar water. The green beans were mushy. The salad bar was adequate and fresh. The banana pudding was okay. But with a tip the meal cost $31 for two. We would have had better, fresher food at the Buffet at the Liberty Steak House, seven miles away down NC 49, for half the price.\r We seriously expected better. Pros: Salad bar, waitress, nice ambience Cons: Small booths, stale, fishy tasting fried chicken; very dry, sweet roast pork; mushy green beans more

Awesome buffet! 11/17/2008

My wife and I felt like trying something new, and we decided to look in the paper to help us and lucky for us there was a whole article about food! To our surprise there was a rating for this restaurant there; a perfect ten!\r So our choice was made! We got there at 12 and took the buffet, and wow.... that's the first thing I said when I chewed through a spoonful of some stirred fried chicken that was sweet, the pork loin was tender and succulent, and the corn bread was heavenly. My wife gave high remarks to the candied yams and the mashed potatoes. The service was wonderful and the price was very reasonable. Highly recommended, I will come again and dont mind driving 45 minutes to enjoy a delicious home cooked meal. Pros: Food, service, price Cons: dining area was a bit cluttered... more

Not as good as it should be 7/3/2008

We've eaten at Ye Olde Country Kitchen a handful of times and it's somewhere between average and very good. Today, we got there at 5:04 right as the restaurant was opening (it closes at 2:30 after lunch). There were already people eating, apparently the cast of the outdoor drama next door. Some of the food on the buffet, like the fried chicken, was obviously old and at room temperature, so maybe it had sat there since lunch. The only bread on there were biscuits that were hard and dried out and only a handful were left. The only potatoes were the canned golfball ones. The salad bar was pretty good, the vegetable-beef soup was really good, and the iced tea was excellent. The strawberry cobbler for dessert was nice but the banana pudding pan was empty. The buffet wasn't kept up too well. Nobody picked up any of our used dishes, so they piled up on the table until we left. It's a quaint place and not too badly priced at $8.99 for the dinner buffet, but honestly, Golden Corral (!!) does it better with a bigger selection and better service (it hurts to say that). Perhaps ordering from the menu makes more sense, although nobody was doing that. I can't quibble given the price and the people are nice enough, but I feel like I paid dinner prices for the lunch leftovers. more

Home cooked Sunday lunch... 3/2/2007

Nesttled up in the middle of Snow Camp is the YOCK; without a doubt some of the best home cooking around. Fresh salad bar with over 40 different items ( i counted 43) for sure you wil make a salad to your taste, but the real treat comes from the buffet. As seen on UNC-TV the buffet looked splendid and very tasty. Apparently there's different food every sunday, so you never get the same meal back to back. The roast is top notch, BBQ best in the south and they have a casserole made from potatoes that is just heavenly! Bolied cabbage, fried squash, chicken pie, and sweet apples; some of the best buffet selections.\r However YOCK is not without fault as one of the users mentioned, Parking is not enough ( I had to park on the side of the road many of times) the temperature was a bit high and some desserts cakes were stale.\r Otherwise I highly recommend this restaurant to others.\r On a high note their menu is has many variants and I also recommend their steaks; specially the ribeyes! Pros: Food and the price Cons: Parking, some desserts, ambient temp. more

Grandma would approve.... 3/1/2007

My family and I are frequent visitors of the Ye Old Country Kitchen. The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The service is excellent. The kids love the Thursday night buffet of pizza and lasagna. My favorite is Sunday buffet. The meats and vegetables taste like your grandmother is working in the kitchen. I would come just for the Banana Pudding. My advice to rje58 is to try again. Anyone can have a bad day. Pros: good food, good service Cons: needs more parking more

Disappointed after hearing so many good reports and reviews 2/22/2007

We decided to try this restaurant after hearing and reading lots of good things about it. We were very disappointed. The food was average at best - the fried chicken was dry, the fish was tough - how can fish be tough? - and the vegetables were not to our taste either.\r \r We ordered the buffet, because that was what was recommended to us. Many of the other diners seemed to be ordering off the menu. If you like lots of vinegar in your green beans and sugary sweet baked beans, then you'll probably enjoy it more than we did. The macaroni and cheese tasted like it was made with some sort of artificial cheese sauce instead of real cheese...\r \r We had high hopes for this place after all the praise we heard for it, but we definitely can't recommend it and probably won't go back. To end on a positive note, it is reasonably priced. Pros: Reasonably priced, friendly service. Cons: Food more
