I first went there for Sunday Brunch with a friend. The brunch was great. I had french toast which had a hint of cinnamon and orange accompanied by tasty sausages and fresh fruit....

Nice Dining Experience 7/29/2006

I enjoyed Wild Orchid. The food and the service was very good. My only complaint: plastic orchids! real flowers would transform the environment more

Not worth the price 6/29/2006

My wife and I went to Wild Orchid after reading a glowing review in the Raleigh News & Observer newspaper. The paper had lauded its Chilean Sea Bass and the restaurant in general. Our experience was quite mixed. This would have been acceptable if the restaurant's prices were far lower than they are. The signature Sea Bass dish was in fact excellent. Another fish dish that my wife had was marginal. The most irritating aspect of the restaurant was its pushy sales tactics. Our waiter informed us at the outset that "we are a three course kind of restaurant", and was repeatedly trying to sell us more food and drinks. The place is somewhat noisy and crowded too -- not a place to go on your anniversary, we we did with some regret. Pros: They are capable of cooking very well Cons: Mixed food quality; pushy service; high prices for inconsistent experience more

AWESOME! 5/29/2006

I first went there for Sunday Brunch with a friend. The brunch was great. I had french toast which had a hint of cinnamon and orange accompanied by tasty sausages and fresh fruit. DELICIOUS bread with cranberries and white chocolate came with our meal. Our waitress was attentive with a friendly and charming smile which made us feel at home! I then decided after a great brunch experience to come to dinner. We came on a friday night and sat on the patio and listened to the pleasant live music. We chose Sea bass and lamb. Both entrees were exquisite with beautiful presentation. the only downside is hat the inside isn't very posh. There is art on the walls, which was nice, but the setting isn't that of a fine dining restaurant. I would recommend the patio, which is set up beautifully. To sum it up, I'll definitely return. Pros: food, service, patio Cons: ambience more

Did Not Meet Expectations 5/26/2006

My husband and I celebrated our birthdays at Wild Orchid after seeing fine reviews and Greg Cox recommendations. What a disappointment! The atmosphere was noisy and the waitress kept calling us "you guys", a pet peeve of mine especially at expensive restaurants. Scallops were gritty. Chicken and accompaniments were a cacaphony of flavors. For this price range and location, we'll dine at Fins in the future. Wild Orchid simply is not worth the money. more

better than the old Portabello 2/6/2006

The bread was warm, the butter was soft ... this was simply a great start to a fabulous meal !! The appetizers (we had the "three cakes" ... and the "dumplings") were good enough to say better than most. Our entrees were flavorful and expertisely prepared and presented ... we had the grouper special ... and lobster gnocchi ... both were excellent. Our server/waiter was very professional ... though he seemed to be a little overwhelmed keeping up with water refills, etc. The "setting" is nice, but not up to par to the other fine-dining places in Raleigh. Chairs were wobbly ... as we saw several customers changing and moving chairs (including us). The "feel" just wasn't enough to call it a romantic dinner. Overall, a nice dinning experience .... but I could suggest many other "better" places in Raleigh. Pros: food Cons: ambiance, seating more

Wild Orchid - SUPERB!!! 1/29/2006

Visited the W.O.G. last weekend and our experience prompted us to write a review. We don't write reviews generally, because we expect excellence when we visit a restaurant with menus items that boast prices fitting of upperscale dining. We've tasted the best of many things, but never had a peice of fish as fine as the Macadamia Nut Encrusted Chilean Sea Bass at the Wild Orchid Grill. If you like fish that's on the sweeter side this is the dish for you. We all ordered diffent items &tasted some of each - Appetizers were Awesome! Every dish was SUPERB! - Every Dish. The Staff was knowledgeable about the food&wines, &the Sous Chef came out to our table to see how we liked the food - nice touch! It is hard to stick out on the fringe in Raleigh, but this place WILL stick out in your memory after one visit. Pros: Nice Bar, Good Wine Selection, Fantastic Sea Bass more

Amazing food 12/11/2005

My wife and I ate here for our anniversary. I had the Filet and she had the Pork Tenderloin. Both were amazing! The different tastes and flavors in every bite made this meal the best one we have had since moving to the Raleigh area. I would recommend to anyone looking for fine "white linen" dining. Pros: Food, Atmosphere more

I found why we have an oil shortage! 7/26/2005

N&O rated this as 3.5/4. It was just OK. The big disappointment was my entree of shrimp in linguini. I haven't seen that much melted butter since I saw the deep fried corn stand at the state fair! There was between 1/4 and 3/8" deep pool swimming in the bottom of my dinner. I persevered by propping my plate up on the side plate to drain it. Yuck. I wondered why the server seemed to need too frequent reassurance that every item was OK. Other dishes were OK, however the check was over $100 without any drinks for two of us and we had the cheaper entrees. This was dinner with a client so I didn't kick up a fuss, however I was trying it with a view to taking my family later . Not any more. Pros: ambience Cons: price, oil slick linguini, price more

New Kid on the block 7/16/2005

I have tried the Wild Orchard three times and all three times I was treated to a cullinary treat. My guest found the lamb second to none! I had fish on all three ocasions and was impressed with the presentation and the taste. The service was great and the chef introduced himself to us and was very interested in our comments. The only negative thing I can say is that the atmosphere is not half as impresive as the food. however it is not an issue, once you place the fork in your mouth. This place is on its way to standing room only. Pros: food, food, food more

AWESOME EXPERIENCE! 6/30/2005

The wait staff is more than lovely, the presentation of each course is off the charts. The atmosphere was romantic, qaint, as well as friendly. A familiar smile from the manager makes the experience even more special. Unbelievable entrees, each bite was as good as the first. Pros: Atmosphere, FOOD!!!, Location more

Very Nice Dinner 6/6/2005

Great food, a bit pricy if you don't watch yourself! Friendly staff/chef. Pros: wine prices, wine knowledge, food choices more

Wonderful Dining Experience 4/28/2005

We found the Wild Orchid Grill to be a wonderful new dining experience. The food was outstanding, presented beautifully, and the service was excellent. more

What a Wonderful Suprise 4/12/2005

I went on a date in early april and actually thought I was going to Portabello, but to my suprise, it had been replaced by a far superior restaurant. For appetizer we had excellent calamari, for entree a perfectly cooked filet and unbeleivable stuffed flounder, and finally the best bread pudding I've ever tasted. It is simply, the best fine dining in North Raleigh, and competes with anything in the city for food and service. Outstanding! Pros: Changing Menu, Great Wine, Ambience more

The Patio 4/8/2005

I recently dine at the wild orchid. My friends decided to eat on their outdoor patio and we had such a great time there it was three and a half hours before we finally left. The way the staff treats you there is personal and proffessial. I would highly recomend this resturant to anyone. more

Birthday Celebration 4/7/2005

I recently brought my friend out for her birthday at the Wild Orchid. They have some of the best food in Raleigh and the wine prices are very fair. Very good service and will be back soon. Pros: food, wine, prices more

Anniversary Dinner 4/6/2005

My wife and I recently visited the Wild Orchid Grill, formerly Portabello's in North Raleigh for our Anniversary. We had dined frequently at Portabello's and were extremely pleased by what we found at the Wild Orchid. The food and presentation were excellent and the wine list was extensive and moderately priced. The service and atmosphere were what you expect from a small fine dining restaurant. Attentive and detailed without being pushy. The Chef even came to our table to check on things and let us know his menu would be changing every month. We would highly recomnend the Wild Orchid and will be returning on a regular basis. Pros: Food, Wine, Service more
