Better than a Roller Coaster 2/18/2006

While visiting Alaska, my family and I rode the famous White Pass and Yukon Railroad to Whitehorse from Skagway. A box lunch was provided with our tickets. We were so hungry, we ate the lunch before boarding the train. It was a good idea since the ride was so exciting and the scenery was breathtaking. I was the one with the camera, so I straddled between cars with the wind blowing in my hair. The view I had was unbelievable. This train is a narrow-gauge railroad track climbing the cliff sides to its destination. A once in a life-time adventure. Don't miss it. more

White Pass &Yukon Railroad 2/17/2006

Although it appears to be yet another tourist trap of Skagway, please do take a few hours to travel the White Pass & Yukon Route. The old-time railroad cars give a fantastic view of the countryside between Whitehorse and Skagway, and there are plenty of opportunities to lean out of the car and take some amazing pictures. Believe it or not, there are some people who actually use the RR to travel between the two cities, so keep your eyes alert for locals. The train station in Skagway has a Starbucks nearby and a small coffee shop inside if you're hungry (and I think you can purchase boxed lunches, too). I'd give it 5 stars, but the touristy-feel does detract a bit; also, the benches inside the cars aren't the most comfortable for the duration of your trip. more
