Depend on Western Pet? YES ten years now. 3/1/2011

So ok! Nothing like seeing a bad review about a place you trust and depend on to get your blood up. Western Pet employees are knowledgeable and helpful but they don't fawn on you or call out about helping you find stuff the second you walk in. I TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for my expereince by making sure they have what I want before I drive in from Scappoose to get it. I lived near the store for about ten years and then I just popped over and they usually had everything I wanted and great advice when ""we"" had ear mites and so on. I moved to Scappoose recently. I buy pet food in large quantities now and don't expect them to always have a whole case whenever I manage to be in town. EVERYONE who works there knows where everything is, or they find out asap......same employees for years and years gets the customer great help. Only small places have that kind of service base and WEstern Pet is huge. They helped lead the raw food movement, were the first to get those big expensive freezers put in so it could be done right . They carry the healthy pet food my holistic vet recommends. My cats are living long and playful lives on the raw food they told me about. If you need them to call out to you across that big store or leave the cash register while you play helpless, well maybe you can't help it, bad puppyhood or something. I am going to remember this little rant I am having and be sure I take responsibility for my own experience the next time I try a new place. A store has a culture. Not all stores handle things the same way and if I expect everything to be exactly a certain way everywhere I go I am going to be disapointed. A rigid idea of perfect customer service cost these folks the gold standard. They don't fuss. They take care of what I need. I moved to Scappoose and I still buy at WEstern Pet in Raliegh Hills. Scappoose also has a great store that carries the raw food but they have to order it in, their freezer is tiny but they are similar to western pet, knowledgable helpful long tern employees, a guy that calls you honey and you don't mind. But Western Pet still has my heart and my wallet. C Lindsay more

Great STORE, Knowledgable STAFF,Best SELECTION,Friendly STAF 5/17/2010

First off, I strongly disagree w/the negative reviewers who complain about poor service at WPS. I don't get to SW PDX as often as I would like, but I like and depend on WPS as it is the kind of pet store for both the casual ""companion"" dog owner & the serious ""fancier"" who really knows dogs & is serious about showing, training and or exhibiting their dog(s). Both love their dogs, of course, but one group has a desire for a little more selection, better quality & a few options at different price points to choose from - and WPS employs an experienced, knowledgable sales staff that can help you then make the best (right?) decision for your particular needs (breed? experience? etc) from their avlbl options. It is a pleasure to go to a pet store where I don't have to search through racks of silly ""extra small"" teeny-weeny-sized ""designer"" dog collars & useless slogan t-shirts suited to purse-sized ""fashion accessory"" dogs (not to mention countless other products that are cute, but useless). Instead, I can actually enjoy browsing and looking at all their wonderful, diverse & interesting product lines without being ""hounded"" (no pun intended) by teenaged sales clerk (like at the big-box pet stores). When you are ready for help, you can then easily find one of the many staff who are more than pleased to offer their opinion (if asked for it) or their assistance in helping you find a solution to you& your pets' needs- even if in the end you buy nothing much at all. Whenever I've gone in, they have been so helpful & so very nice, and even given my dog wayyy more doggie treats than she really deserved!! Pros: selection & varienty, knowledge, suitable 4 casual & serious Cons: Not my side of town! No 20% off sales coupon ea. week 4 CRAP more

Great Store but Crappy Service 1/5/2010

Couldn't agree w/ AWickedMemory more. We have a new puppy after a few years being dogless. Hit our favorite pet store only to have worthless help picking out puppy food (they have a good variety though). Then the guy at the register made us feel like I was bothering him somehow by being at the store. My wife even made a comment the moment we walked out. Pros: Great variety of stuff and close to my house Cons: Crabby service more

Great store, but felt unwelcome 11/17/2009

I felt disappointed by how I was treated (or not treated, as the case may be). I went there on recommendation from a friend to find senior cat food, but while they had a wide selection of brands available for cats and dogs, they had very, very little to offer for senior cats. Additionally, I wandered their store for about 40 minutes and while employees would chat across the aisles and sidestep me, nobody once offered assistance. When I was finally sure I'd been up and down every aisle and only found one type of senior cat food in stock, I finally took a can of it up to the counter and asked if there was anything else. In response, one of the attendants led me straight back to the section with the very can I held and said that was it (you couldn't just say so at the counter?). *Then* they charged me incorrectly at the counter, bumping up the prices. When I pointed out the price discrepancy, the woman sighed and acted like it was a hassle even though it was their mistake. Overall, I felt very unwelcome there and will not be going back, even though it is the nearest to my house. Pros: Good selection on regular food Cons: Rude service, poor selection on less common products more

The Best Pet Supply! 8/29/2009

This store has a great selection of foods. My dog has many problems with food, but they are able to give very knowledgeable advice. They will carry your food to your car. When I found a pet food that I couldn't find anywhere in Portland, they ordered it for me. Pros: Great Selection more

best for all 4/5/2006

western pet supply is the one place you can go to get all of your pet's supplies; including vaccinations. They are very helpful and go out of their way to be friendly. If they don't know the answer to your questions, the will find it right away. Pros: good parking, good products, variety Cons: can be expensive for more

A Dog's Best Friend 3/17/2006

Seriously, dog, this pet store rules! The best thing about it is the staff, who are always helpful, very knowledgable, and willing to share their opinion on products. They suggested a gentle, citronella anti-bark collar for my dog (instead of the shock kind), because he has anxiety. No other place listens like that! And they seem to really enjoy these interactions! Also WPS stocks great natural foods that are hard to find. Wonderful place (plus it's right by Sesame Donuts, so I get a treat too!). Pros: great selection, amazing service, near Sesame onuts more

Best in the West 11/17/2002

This huge store stocks only the best in quality. If you want foods that prolong your pet's lifespan and health, don't waist time in the big chain stores. From all natural foods, to safety light collars, and doggie hiking gear, this store has everything you need. Customer service is awsome too. Bring your pets shopping with you and they get treated like a star, including some free snacks for your pet. Pros: quality, specialty items, customer service Cons: parking lot exit, traffic more
