Volunteering in the Lexington area is a great way to meet people, learn new things, and use your skills and experience to help others. I can't find a web site for the Volunteer Center of the Bluegrass, so I am not sure whether they are still in operation, or what. However, you can still find out about local volunteering opportunities through the United Way of the Bluegrass, or through volunteermatch.org. VolunteerMatch is very cool. They will email you when there is an open volunteer position that matches your skills and interests. United Way of the Bluegrass has a web site that may serve in a similar way: www.uwbg.org
