We've eaten here a few times and it has been a wonderful experience on all occasions. The macaroni and cheese is phenomenal and could almost feed a small army. I usually get the...

I selected this new offering from Mr. B. hoping that it would offer a more subdued, romantic atmosphere than Parazade and the Garage. No such luck, at least not in the front room ...

Romantic dining and excellent food 5/1/2004

We were prompty seated outside on the patio, which has a great atmosphere. The service was unpretentious, and the waiter recommended good choices of wine and food. All of the dishes from appetizers, main courses, to the desserts were delicious. The most recent chef does a superb job using typical sauces and seasonings of provence in many of the menu items. Pros: romantic, superb food more

Just ok...wouldn't try it again. 9/14/2003

First off let me say that I went on Sunday AM for brunch so I can't speak on the quality/service for dinner. As far as brunch goes this place was nothing spectacular. I had a coffee, a garden omelette which came with frites and just the house bread. Coffee was good but nothing special (albeit I am not a coffee connoisseur). The omelette was just mediocre...the omelette itself was good but the vegetables inside were cold. The fries were good but overdone and warm, not hot. Worst of all was the bread. It tasted like Kroger bread...just ok and nothing even close to a true French baguette. Service was fine but it wasn't very crowded so there was not much to put to the test. Pros: Nice outside seating Cons: All around boring more

trip to paris 2/24/2003

upon entering the restaurant, I was promptly greeted and seated. The red room provided the perfect ambiance. The candle-lit dinner, young handsome watistaff, and savory foods all added to the experience; not to mention the great wine selection that's cheap and inexpensive. I loved the Vin Rouge dining experience and would this restaurant to anyone. Pros: cute waitstaff, outside dining area, ambiance Cons: inconsistent food, tight sittings more

AMAZING! 2/23/2003

My dining experience at Vin Rouge was absolutely perfect. The food was marvelous, not to mention ""real"" french cuisine! The restaurant was spotless, the atmosphere was very plesant and the waitstaff was very personable and prompt. Our overall experience was superb, and I would recommend it to all my friends. Pros: excellent food, prompt service, great waitstaff more

Very good! 1/27/2003

We went to Vin Rouge for lunch. The onion soup was a little sweet, but other than that there was really nothing to complain about. Spinach crepes and French dip were excellent. Prices and service were good too. And we loved the atmosphere - we will try it for dinner soon. more

outstanding! 10/22/2002

My husband and I have eaten there twice - both times in their lovely outdoor area, and both times the food was fantastic! We found the service to be knowledgeable and curteous, and the portions (as seems to be the norm for this area) were enormous. I am sorry cold weather is here so we can't enjoy the ambience outside anymore.. Pros: food, outdoor patio, french bistro feeling Cons: small indoor area, some tables too close more

Below Standards 9/18/2002

Have been there 3 times. The last 2 times the plate was burning hot but the food was plain cold. It was below room temperature. That makes me wonder about the freshness of their meals. They probably prepare it in the afternoon and pull it out of the fridge on demand. I just wonder about the way they heat up the meals. The wait staff appeared to be polite but neither knowledgable nor very responsive. I like the ambience on the patio. It is a gem among the scarce outdoor dining opportunities in Durham. In short words I will come back for a glass of wine and a snack but no dinner anymore. Pros: ambience, outside dining option, good wine list Cons: clueless wait staff, food quality, no draft beer more

LOVED IT 8/23/2002

My husband and I found the food to be fantastic, the atmosphere great, and the service great. We cannot wait to go back. Oh wait.....the prices were awesome--very, very reasonable. Pros: reasonable, friendly more

Tres Disappointing! 8/23/2002

Following an initial disappointing visit I was talked by friends into giving Vin Rouge a second try. Unfortunately, initial impressions were only reconfirmed. Generally bland and uninspired food served by careless, disinterested wait staff. The waiter took away one appetizer with a single bite missing without inquiring if anything was amiss. Multiple requests for such simple things as replenishing bread and water were unsuccessful on both visits. We love Parizade but George B. needs to go back to the drawing board on this one! more

Outstanding 6/27/2002

Giorgio Bakatsias has outdone himself this time. While the atmosphere is not, the food is reminiscent of a french bistro/restaurant. Attentive and courteous staff for a Friday evening. Superb liver with bacon and onions, and not as you would expect! Pros: Nice outdoor dining Cons: poor AC more

Nous l'aimons! 6/4/2002

I am a student at NCSSM, a residential high school down the street. I went to this restaurant with my French class and we enjoyed our visit. We were served by polite waiters who served us delicious food in a timely manner. They didn't even cringe when they had to divide the bill three dozen ways! We spent an enjoyable evening, and several of us intend to stop by again for dessert. It's a bit expensive for a student's budget, but it's certainly a nice place to celebrate a special occasion. I especially reccommend the chocolate torte for dessert. It's warm, rich, and full of calories. :) Pros: delicious, courteous staff, quiet atmosphere Cons: expensive more

It's a bistro folks 6/2/2002

I don't know who writes the reviews for Citysearch, but they are provincial. Fun place, good bistro food, even without the orange in the salad. Kitchen was a little slow, but the place is new. Thank George for hiring a manager who knows what he is doing. Good wine list for bistro. more

noisy, crowded, good food 5/22/2002

I selected this new offering from Mr. B. hoping that it would offer a more subdued, romantic atmosphere than Parazade and the Garage. No such luck, at least not in the front room where tables are inches from each other, and the bar and kitchen are located. The food was good but conversation was hard over the din of the rather eclectic crowd. more
