Awesome and desolate place 5/15/2008

My wife and I visited this great escape from Vegas in November 2007. We wanted (and needed) to get away from the Vegas scene and places like Valley of Fire are worth it. We spent an awesome afternoon of hiking various trails in the park, and feeling the solitude of the escape. Half the fun of our day there was just in getting there from Vegas. It's definately off the beaten path and well worth the drive (about an hour). Be sure to take sunscreen, lots of water to drink, and pack a lunch. I would recommend wearing hiking shoes as well. Pros: Awesome beauty; solitude; not crowded; within an hour's drive from Vegas more

Great Scenery 5/25/2002

This small, off the beaten track state park has some amazing views, awesome scenery and is rarely crowded (at least during my visits there). Several movies and commercials have been filmed there, the most famous recent film is Star Trek Generations. The planet scenes in the movie featuring Captain Picard and Dr. Soran are shots from Fire Canyon and Silica Dome. An great view of Lake Mead can be seen from here too. Pros: not usually crowded, great views Cons: desert temperatures more
