AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAQUE!! OVERPRICED AND NOTHING BUT LIARS!!!\r \r I took my cat to a VCA Animal Hospital in Conn. and I loved it there! I never had an issue! So, I was thrilled to find there was one 10 minutes away from me! However, that was where it ended. This place is so different than the one in Conn! I took my cat in for her annual physical and vaccinations. My cat is 10 and has a past history of kidney failure and cancer. While there, Dr Lupole drilled in to me how important it was to get my cat's urine as because kidney failure shows first in the urine, before the blood. She also got me to agree to some xrays. It came as a package, which cost me over $400! The technician came in and took my cat to do her bloodwork and urine. She returned her saying to me that they got everything fine, and to stop at the front desk to pay my bill and make an appointment for her xrays. So, we stopped with Tammy. When I gave the date I wanted to bring my cat in, she goes, ""Dr Lupole isnt' in surgery that day."" Me: ""Okaaayyy.... She's not having sugery, she's getting xrays."" Tammy, "" Well, we sedate for xrays."" Me:""My cat had xrays when she was diagnosed with cancer. They didn't sedate her then, I'm not sedating her now."" Tammy, ""I'll need to contact the Dr to make sure we can do that. I'll give you a call."" I left there confused, frustrated, and feeling rushed. So, Tammy called back saying they can try it without sedation.\r \r Monday rolls around and the vet calls. Dr Lupole, :Are you having trouble getting urine from Zoe?"" Me: ""huh?"" Dr L :Well, the technician documented here that she wasn't able to get urine and sent you home with a kit."" Me: ""No, Nothing was given to me. In fact, the technician said they got everything."" Dr L"" Oh, must be a mistake. We'll just get the urine when she comes in for xrays.""\r \r So, I waited a couple of days, but I was still mad. How dare you tell me how important it is to obtain urine, then lie to me about obtaining it, and falsify my cat's medical chart??? So, I called the manager because I wanted my money back for the urine and xrays because how can I trust someone that lies to me on my first visit about something like that?? Well, the manager talked me in to bringing Zoe back. While there, the director informed me that she's not sure why they wanted to sedate Zoe, when 95% of the time they can do it without sedation. As I was reading through the reviews, I came across others that had this same issue. Obviously, the issue it hasn't been resolved. So, they went out of their way to try and undo the wrong frist visit I had. They were able to get the xrays without sedation, and they kept her so they could obtain urine.\r \r Monday rolls around again, and the vet calls with the urine results. Jen, the secretary asks for a number I'll be available at for the next 10 - 15 minutes. I wait and wait. Two hours later, still no call back and I had to go to work. I understand emergencies happen, but don't be making me wait by the phone thinking I'll get a call within 15 minutes and make me wait over 2 hours. Just tell me that I'll get a return call before the day is over. That's completely adequate and more truthful!! I ended that call by asking them to ready my cat's chart because I was done being lied to. If I can't trust them with something as simple as urine, how can I trust them if she ever needs surgery?? A minute after I hung up, my phone rings. OH! The vet was suddenly available to return my call! SURPRISE!!! \r \r Also, they have my address wrong in the system. I have given them the correct one 3 times now, and it's still wrong!!! Seriously! This office is horrible! Lack of brains, lack of ethics, and lack of respect!!! more

Extremely happy that we switched to this office!!! 8/4/2012

I recently switched to VCA West Shore Animal Hospital from another veterinarian office and couldn't be happier! The entire experience here has been pleasent and everyone in the office treats our Kitty as if she was family. I feel that they care about what they do and about our Kitty. Professional, courteous, caring, throrough, and just plain great at what they do! more

Our sweet Lucky 6/22/2012

We removed our pets from this practice back in 2005. Our little sheltie, Lady, had developed symptoms of Lyme Disease and we had brought her in for appointments for over a year because of these symptoms. We saw intern after intern, before finally, someone thought to test for Lyme. By then, it was too late, and Lady lived out her final two years in much arthritic pain.\r \r On June 18, 2012, we returned our only surviving sheltie, Lucky, to this practice because of the substandard care he received elsewhere. West Shore Animal Hospital discovered that Lucky had extensive liver damage, and two days later, he had to be euthanized .\r Mostly, the staff and veterinarians at West Shore were sympathetic and helpful, although Dr. Richards seemed to have a hard time figuring out that Lucky was a male, not a female. I don't think keeping a very sick dog alone in a cage all night, to lie in his vomit and urine, did much good for Lucky though.\r \r When we finally euthanized Lucky, it was near the end o more

Puurrrfect Place for Pets 2/6/2012

Dr. Davis and the staff at VCA West Shore are outstanding! They make pet parents feel important and treat the animals like their own. They are great with my 3 cats who are less than thrilled to take a car ride to go get shots. I wouldn't take them anywhere else! Pros: null Cons: null more

Caring Vet 1/29/2012

My cat Winnie gets very good care from the staff at VCA. I can always get her there when she needs extra TLC :o) due to their convenient hours. VCA is keeping Winnie as healthy as she can be! more

Serious pricing issues 1/5/2011

I agree that this practice has seriously suffered after being bought out by VCA. The vets have always been good and I don't believe that has changed. But, the attempts to do very costly tests which are in no way indicated is alarming. During a preop visit, I was told (after the fact) that they had drawn blood for a battery of tests- 90% unnecessary, costing hundreds of dollars. This was for a common procedure on a young healthy dog. I insisted they not submit the lab work and went to another vet for a second opinion (a large well respected practice). The same surgery was less than half the cost of VCA's price, and they didn't require hundreds of dollars of labwork, just the normal preop labs. I decided to do some investigating, and found out VCA's prices were nearly twice the cost of other clinics in central pa, across the board. I didn't find a single practice with prices anywhere near VCA's. The care is good, but they aren't the only competent and caring practice in town. I feel espe more

Best Vet Ever! 12/8/2010

I recently brought my newest puppy to VCA West Shore for her shots and other puppy stuff. We have been in 3 times so far and she is going to be spayed in a few more months. I have tried a couple other area vets, but recently moved to New Cumberland and decided to try VCA because they are close to my house. At my first visit I was amazed at how knowledgeable the doctor?s and staff are. They covered every question I had about my puppy and even called me a few days after each visit to make sure she was doing well after getting her shots. Every time I?ve been in they?ve really taken their time to make sure that I understand everything I need to do for my baby. \r I think their prices are on par with other hospitals I?ve been to and they are worth every penny because they actually like animals and know what they are talking about! (not so with the other area vets I?ve been to). I agree with others that if you want a budget clinic that will only do and recommend the minimum more

Wonderful Doctors and Staff!!! 6/21/2010

I have been a client at VCA West Shore for 6 years now and have only wonderful things to say about them. They only recommend the best things for my pets, they don't ever start with "Plan B". When I have an emergency, they always get my pets in right away. The customer service at VCA is always outstanding. I recommend VCA to everyone! more

Best Vet in the Area! 6/21/2010

VCA West Shore in New Cumberland is the best Animal Hospital I've ever taken my pets too. They always get us in right away when my pets have a problem, even if we call late in the day. I have learned the hard way that you get what you pay for when going to the vet. I've seen most of the doctors at VCA and they are all wonderful and the staff is always so nice. They always recommend the best options for my pets. I recommend VCA to everyone, they are wonderful! Pros: Caring Doctors and Staff, Competitive Price Cons: None more

We miss PRE-VCA! Left after 25 years 1/12/2010

I never blame the vet, per se for the death of a cat, so our many, many cats and one dog were treated, sometimes properly diagnosed, sometimes died from mysterious causes but it was still a good place to go and we travelled a ways to use them. I loved the staff AND the vets. Last time we went, April 2009, for a well cat checkup for our 14+ y.o. FIV positive cat, the technician went through a preprinted form of tests for senior cats which would have resulted in a $750 charge for AN ANNUAL CHECKUP! He wasn't sick. Some of the tests were counterindicated for FIV positive cats. I asked about this and she said to ask the vet. Well, the vet "talked us into" about $350 in tests and then a multple tooth extraction procedure, but she didn't catch something we found out two months later: That he had advanced lymphoma. If they hadn't taken all that blood and pretended to be so thorough, I wouldn't expect to find out more at a well cat visit. OH, YEA: He was losing weight steadily that l more

Cares only about getting their money! 8/6/2009

I went there this time because my mom took my dog there 2 weeks ago because that is where she takes her dog and it is close. . But, It is all about the money with VCA West Shore. I had just spent $300 for a vet visit for my dog and was back 2 weeks later and they wanted over $500 more. I explained my situation amoung which are my other dog was injured in a near car accident costing $280, my car just came out of the shop to the tune of $1200 the week before and my cat was in for emergency surgery for $236 the week before that - so I was a little strapped at that moment. But since my animals are very important to me I asked if I could pay that in 2 payments, half now and half in 2 weeks, and she said "I understand, but we require payment in full at the time of service". So, in other words, too bad, your dog can die and we don't care because we need to be paid on the spot - not 2 weeks from now???!!! What kind of place would not take into consideration a situation like that and work with you. Only a place that doesn't care about your pet, just about their money. I went there for years before they became VCA. And now I have a difficult situation and they won't work with me on this. Who needs that? I'll continue to go to the great vet I chose after West Shore became VCA - an office where they truly care about all the animals and have a great staff. And I believe if I were in a tight situation they'd be willing to work with me - because they have a heart. Pros: Dr Davis Cons: money hungry and uncaring? more
