In It More for the $$$ Than the Pets 7/28/2011

Only reason I gave this place 2 stars is because they aren't incompetent when it comes to doggy checkups, and they let me used my Friends of Animals spay certificate for my pup (only after charging for a pre-spay office visit and bloodwork, and all the bloodwork/anesthesia involved on actual spay-day...whatever) Other than that, I am SO happy I moved away and was forced to find a new vet (whom I LOVE). I agree with the review below - they try to sucker you into all of these unnecessary tests, bloodwork, etc. My dad has been taking his dogs there for 35 years, but unfortunately the doctor he always used retired about 4 year ago. When I got my puppy, I took her there because I didn't know of anywhere else to go. I got some young vet who told me my dog needed this test, that test, etc. Now, I know new pups need a lot of preventative care...but my girl was almost 9 months old when I got her. Her great-granddad is Kirby - the Papillon who won Best In Show at Westminster in 1999. My puppy was bred specifically to breed (the breeder bred show dogs and wanted to continue the gene pool) but my little puppy, at 9 months, was still tiny (less than 5 pounds), so the breeder didn't want to take a chance that she'd be too small to be a mommy, and that's how I got her. (it wasn't until my pup was 2.5 yrs old that she reached her full grown weight of 8 pounds lol) Needless to say, this dog received IMPECCABLE care as a pup, and her gene pool was carefully selected to minimize any chances of genetic problems, etc. Still, the vet insisted I get some "1 yr gene test" to check for abnormalities....being a new doggy mommy, I did. Obviously unnecessary - the dog is fine! When I took her back for her year 2 checkup, they told me the same thing! "She needs her year 2 genetic check, shes getting older now, we want to prevent any problems now.." Now, keep in mind that the Papillon life span is anywhere from 13-18 years! At the age of 2, she was still a puppy! I declined this time and was given a guilt trip about it. An office visit here is $50!!!!!! And the yearly checkup exam (included checkup, heartworm test, fecal exam, distemper/parvo shot) was $150! Oh - and they DECLINED my 1800 Petmeds order so I was forced to buy a year of heartworm pills from them for $100. These guys are in it solely for the $$$$. They try to sell you their crappy dog food there too, even though my dog is on a premium organic line of feed and was experiencing perfect energy, no bowel problems etc. Thankfully, I moved to another vet, where the yearly exam and all of its procedures costs $100 instead of $150 (and the year order of heartworm pills through 1800PEtmeds was only $50). If you're stuck, VCA Neshaminy is an ok place to have your dog treated. But don't fall for their money making scams. more

Too money hungry 3/9/2011

They used to be okay before becoming part of the VCA chain, now they've become too greedy. Like others have stated, it's like going to car dealer. They try to push all kinds of tests and wellness programs on you. Paid $80 just to perform a blood pressure test and that didn't include the exam/consultation fee. Ask them for all prices before letting them do anything. Better yet, go somewhere else if you want reasonably priced care. I stopped using them in 2009 and found a group I like a lot better. I'm sure that they will continue to lose patients due to their greed. more

More Salespeople than Veterinarians 2/14/2007

Best to find an intimate practice who isn't so sales obsessed (just see for yourself ; compare or ask around.) Selling and up-selling pressure, it seems, is put on these vets. Again, just compare for yourself. Sell, sell sell! Pros: Very nice place, convenient Cons: Too sales-driven; inexperience, uncertainty (too many different doctors). more
