My hard drive with all my photos on it failed, and I had it looked at by first Kroll Ontrack and then by Total Access. Neither of them were able to retrieve the content, unfortunately, but Total Access returned it after a short time and charged me $200 for a part they had to purchase, while Kroll Ontrack purchased several parts to try and make it work and didn't charge me for any of them.
While this doesn't say anything about either company's capability, it sheds light on their different business ethics, I think.
