Top of the Hill 4/7/2007

The food was good, the staff was helpful and friendly, but it does get pretty crowded on weekend nights. Great view of downtown Franklin St. I'd recommend going there for lunch when it's not as busy. more

Top O Crowd-O! 4/13/2006

Top of the Hill is famous, and if you're new to Chapel Hill, you MUST check it out for the amazing view of Franklin. However, if you don't feel like waiting a long time to get a drink, you will soon realize that you will not be coming out here on Fridays and Saturdays. But I think it's a great lunch spot!!!! more

Upscale Southern Favorites 4/8/2006

Top of the Hill is a so much more than it has to be. Located in the heart of Franklin Street, Top of the Hill could settle for the standard pub fare and brewery beers. Instead, they kick it up a notch and produce really good food and brew some unique beers. Top of the Hill was one of the first places to experiment with higher alcohol content beers when the new law took effect in 2005. The crab dip appetizer is great, and my husband enjoys the thumbs and toes chicken appetizer. The calamari is average. The fried chicken is good but it is breasts - not on the bone. The mashed potatoes are amazing. They have a great chocolate dessert, if you have room left!! The outdoor dining has a great view of Franklin Street and comes complete with heaters or fans, depending on the weather. A nice spot for happy hour, a romantic dinner, or out-of-town guests. more

great view, a little crowded 4/6/2006

I think I would like Top of the Hill a lot more if it weren't so crowded. Every time I've been there, it's been completely packed. Understandably, it's a popular bar with a great view of Franklin Street. The crowd that it draws tends to be mostly college kids from the greek scene, but there's usually an interesting mix of older people and others. If you haven't been to Top of the Hill yet, it's something you really should experience even if you've spent just a little time in Chapel Hill. more

A tradition - totally Chapel Hill 3/30/2006

Whenever someone wants to visit Chapel Hill, I always recommend they check out Top of the Hill. My most fun times there have been in the evenings and nights spent out on the patio. It's a great place for a big view of Franklin Street. People watching is fun. Heck, people watching within Top of the Hill is fun because almost every type of person passes through there on a busy night in all styles of dress. We always like to go there after the Barristers Ball in our fancy dresses/suits. Good times. more

Great food - but too crowded for nightlife 3/24/2006

Top of the Hill is a great place for lunch or dinner. My girls always choose this place for Homecoming or a reunion. Good food, good portion sizes, good service. I recommend the Oysters Florentine Gnocchi! However, I would avoid this place as a bar - too many young'uns, too crowded, nearly impossible to get service. more

Way Expensive 2/3/2006

Top of the Hill is way too expensive for what your getting in my opinion. If you are looking for a brewery who brews their own "good" beer and great food go to the carolina Brewery down the street. This place is overpriced and their beer is not as good as their competition. If you're looking for somewhere uber swanky where you're spending money just for the sake of doing so this may be your ticket. more

Try The Pork tenderloin 2/3/2006

Top of the Hill is a relatively new addition to Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. The restaurant is owned by several guys who graduated from the university, two of them are brothers. The chef here prepares exquisite dishes, from the crab cake appetizers to the pork tenderloin, the food will melt in your mouth. The restaurant also has a large selection of beer on tap because they have their own brewery. You can see some of the beer being made! more

good food, better views 8/31/2005

Top of the Hill is a Chapel Hill institution. For any true Tarheel, it's a must to watch a basketball game on Top of the Hill's patio, knocking back a few of the restaurant's excellent micro-brews. The restaurant is located on the top floor of the building at the corner of Franklin and Columbia and has a great patio/balcony that is fantastic for people-watching. The food here is really good, so even if it's not good weather for the patio, the restaurant is still definitely worth the trip. Don't leave without trying one of the beers, brewed onsite! Plus, the best thing is they're locally owned and operated. more

Perfect Place for the Chapel Hill atmosphere! 8/16/2005

This is my all time favorite spot in Chapel Hill. Whether you have lived here all your life, just here for a couple years, or just visiting for the weekend- this is a MUST! The beer on draft is all brewed in the restaurant, and I have liked all of the beers that I have tried. The food is excellent- perfect place to take your parents if they are in town for parent's weekend! Perfect place to grab a drink with friends after work and look down onto Franklin Street as the sun sets. Overall- it doesn't get any better than this in Chapel Hill! more

Ehhh, not as super as I expected. 8/4/2005

This place gets an A++ for atmosphere. Both inside and outside seating are superb. The hosts and wait staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is extremely limited. I really had a hard time finding something that I would like, so it didn't surprise me much when I didn't really like my dish. Also, this place is not very kid-friendly. I guess I expected it to be sort of pub-ish with good bar food...it's not. Although, I've heard that it can be a good place to watch a game. Hmmm.... more

Good food 7/31/2005

The food is pretty good. The menu selection is nice. There is outdoor seating on the top floor. This is nice because you can get a view of Franklin street, where all the UNC action is located. I would recommend this restaurant. more
