What You'll Find
Specializing in pottery and textiles, everything comes direct from Japan. Pottery styles include shigaraki, bizen and oribe, and pieces vary from sake sets and serving trays to chopstick rests, vases and tea ceremony bowls. Tokai's textiles are just as exquisite, particularly the collection of noren. Noren is a hand-painted or dyed linen cloth, the top foot or so is attached but the bottom portion hangs as two strips-perfect for a doorway that you don't want people peering through. Originally used as shop signs, modern noren make artistic wall hangings and window coverings-they're also great for dividing large, open spaces (your studio apartment perhaps).
The Shop's Feel
Tokai isn't huge, but its light hardwood floors, soothing music and faint aroma of incense give the shop a serene, spacious feel.
