Consistently Pleasant 8/8/2009

Toji is a favorite of mine. When I am feeling down there is nothing like a little spicy Kimchi Stew to pick me right back up again. The prices are reasonable, the food fresh and thoughtfully presented and parking always ample. Their long-time server (Katie?) always is smiley and kind. It is always a pleasant experience eating there. Bring a sweater though, if you aren't grilling at the table. Pros: Awesome Banchan, Cheap Soju, Kimchi Stew Cons: Too much Air Conditioning? more

Wonderful Korean Food 2/14/2009

I lived in Korea for a little over a year, and all of my fondest memories involved food. Toji Restaurant's food tastes just like I am eating in Korea. I've been going to Korean restaurants for a few years now, but they're in Beaverton and I live on the East side. It's awesome that there's a great Korean restaurant on my side of town. Pros: Great food, excellent service, and great value Cons: Parking is limited behind the resteraunt more

Great sauces and side dishes 6/21/2008

So I know how Korean food should taste like and know when I taste one. My first impression of this restaurant when I first walked in was that there was no Korean. I suddenly went, ""uh oh."" Also, I waited for 10 minutes to be seated even though there were empty tables because the place was under staffed. But when I tasted the food, especially the banchans, I knew Toji was a good restaurant. Cucumber salad and leek pancake were excellent. One thing I did not understand was that I did not see any fresh Kimchi for side dish. There was a cooked Kimchi dish but was not very good. I ordered pork belly barbecue and a cold noodle bowl. The meat was a good quality and the cut was a little thicker than usual but was pretty interesting looking but the taste was really good. The best part was the sauce. They gave me three different sauces for dipping the meat and the red colored one was really awesome. I could tell that this sauce is some kind of a fusion recipe but was very unique and made the meat taste good. As far as the cold noodle, the beef broth was excellent. It was very authentic and had a deep and mature taste to it. The spicy sauce for cold noodle was also good. It was not some simple crappy hot sauce often used in many Korean restaurants for cold noodle. Also, it was interesting how the place was not really all smoky inside even though the place did not have fans above grill tables. In conclusion, my only regret was that they did not have fresh Kimchi as a side dish. As far as there being not enough staff, I was forgiving since they were super nice. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience there. more

first class service and food 2/14/2008

Just like any korean, I am very picky when it comes to eat korean food. I have place to go now. I live in beaverton but to eat a good food like toji, I have no complains. Price is very resonable compair to American restaurants. I don't understand why people complain about the price. just go and try good Korean food. You'll understand why. My husband loves to cook at the table, he thinks it is the most wonderful experience to cook your own food at your table and try all thoes side dishes. Great place to go with family. Galbi is superb and seafood pancake is to die for. more

good mix of korean and japanese food 1/6/2008

I recommend the fried mandu (potstickers), the bibimbap, the chicken bento and any of the grilled meats (galbi, chicken galbi, ect) Pretty spendy, but not more than most korean restaurants. Friendly staff, GREAT food. I always see many Korean families with their children, which is a sign of a good Korean restaurant. Pros: great food, can bbq your own meat at the table just like in Korea Cons: spendy more

Pretty Good food (cook yourselves) 11/12/2007

I really liked the idea of cooking (grilling) it yourself at your table and how can you find fault with the food that you yourselves cook :-). Anyways, I liked the food and the service was good. (the menu was tough to read, but the server helped us through). more

As good as a first class restaurant in Seoul 10/7/2007

When the Koreans outnumber everyone else in the restaurant it sends a strong message, one that was truly supported by the great authentic food, spotless facility, and quiet ambiance. After three years living in Korea and eating Korean food from the corner food stand to the best restaurant in Seoul Toji meets the test, right up there with the best. more

MY FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT!!!! 7/13/2007

This is my absolutely favorite restaurant in Portland. Whenever we want to show off to my out-of-town guests we ALWAYS take them to this restaurant. The service is fantastic the food the best in the city and the best green tea in town because they import it. They are also very wonderful with children ... they bring the kids food fast and hot and have special plates and utensils for toddlers and just make all kids feel so welcome. Everyone leave happy and full and I would give this restaurant my highest and heartfelt recommendation. Pros: Fantastic food and service soooooo yummy!! Cons: NONE!! more

Americanized Korean 6/10/2007

Well, this place is very safe for those of you who like the idea of Korean cuisine without all of the amazing fixins that you have never seen before and may be afraid to try. The BBQ is great, good meat and sauces, but the other dishes, especially my favorite the bibimbop lacks all the good root vegetables that makes the dish what it is, also you have to request raw egg for the stone dishes or they will thoroughly cook it for you, kind of ruining the dish to me. the atmosphere is great, the service is great, but its just not traditional Korean food as i understand it. Pros: Great BBQ Cons: Lacks tradional ingrediants more

Large portions of high quality food, extremely helpful service, great fun to cook yourself at the table 2/9/2007

We tried this restaurant on the spur of the moment and were extremely with our decision. We were starving and couldn't decide between Japanese and Korean. We made a outstanding decision.\r \r The menu was difficult but the waitress was extremely helpful in guiding us. The order came quickly, and the food was bountiful. The meats were top quality, freshly cut, and the sauces delicious.\r \r We tried the potstickers (vegetable), the dumpling soup (wonderful), the rib eye and short rib dinners that we prepared on the hibatchi table. The ginger sauce was outstanding, as was the kimchee and several other condiments; the dumpling soup shouldn't be missed.\r \r The waitress was adorable and showed us how to prepare the meats and instructed us on the condiments. She kept our glasses filled, and came by the table frequently to make sure we were doing ok. \r \r We ate too much, brought home a lot, and will go back very soon. Next time we will order less. You could probably share a dinner comfortably with an appetizer. \r \r The price is reasonable for the amount of food you get. Pros: Great food, fun, good service, interesting concept Cons: ate too much, menu hard to read in the dark more

Poor Customer Service! 1/27/2007

The customer service at this restaurant was LACKING (big time). They weren't attentive at all - you need to hunt down your waitress if you need something. The food was OK, but not worth the drive (coming from \r Tigard). It was overpriced for having to cook your own food - might as well stay home and do this. \r Pros: Service Cons: Parking more

Great food, great service! 1/6/2007

I'm half Korean and have been eating Korean food all my life and have also spent alot of time in Korea and was pleasantly surprised with how good the food was at Toji's. I dragged my boyfriend here so I could have my Korean food fix, he's never eaten Korean food so he was very skeptical but he left very full and happy. He really enjoyed all the meats and even enjoyed trying all the side dishes. The kimchee was better than most places I've tried, but nothing is better than homemade. We will definately be back for more! more

All the fun of cooking, but no clean-up! 5/15/2006

Grilling your own food is fun, and at Toji, the meat is excellent, but what really makes it great is the delicious dipping sauce, so good! Korean food is good and Toji gets it 100% right. I love the 11 different kinds of pickles that come with the grill-meat. Try the hot stone bibimbop (a fried rice dish w/ seasoned ground beef, egg, and yummy korean veggies), but let the rice get nice and crispy before you mix it up. Pros: great food, great service, great location more

Good Food, Small Portions 5/5/2006

We came here with a big group and had to order a lot of plates as the amount of food served compared to most other Korean restaurants wasn't enough. The food was good, but I would rather go to one of the Beaverton Korean restaurants or the one on Powell for a better value and just as good of food. Pros: Decor Cons: Price, Portions more

Great service, food 4/1/2006

I highly recommend repeated visits to this restaurant. The staff were extremely polite, quick, and informative. The food was absolutely incredible. A great place to dine as a couple and even better with a group of friends. more

Fantastic! 3/7/2006

Having dined at more than enough of Korean restaurants from Portland to Seattle to Vancouver BC, Toji totally up'ed my standards for authentic Korean food. A Korean friend once explained the importance of how appetizers are the trademarks of a restaurant, and how it dictates their success, and, being at Toji, I am sure the owners here nailed it. Carefully prepared dishes, warm service, spacious environment and the absence of BBQ fume. Pros: Good Service, Authenticity, Parking more

very good, deserves more business 1/12/2006

Lovely setting, great, attentive service. Quality dishes and a grill at every table with a staff willing to help in every way so you don't burn the place down or over-cook your food. Appetizers and other main courses are very good. Great Kimche Chigae and the wonderful little plates they bring out for every meal are varied, mysterious and delicious. The location seems to be cursed for previous businesses for some reason, so I hope enough people will come here for this place to survive. It really is a wonderful, reasonable and interesting dining experience for Korean cuisine. more
