Thai China Buffet

I am part of a group of people that has frequented this restaurant many times in recent years. For the past several months, their service has become horrible. They do bring your beverage initially but they never return to check with you for refills. I've tried to get their attention, I've even refilled my own drink, and I stopped leaving a tip as my companions. The last time we went there, we experienced that same poor service but that slapped us with an 18% gratuity. So, they have lost some regular customers who have no plans to return. My UNC grad student friend invited me to this restaurant and when I saw ""Thai China Buffet"", I prepared myself for a chinese buffet, which is normally not my cup of tea. But this is a very misleading name. The Thai food in this place is fantastic and to top it off, it is very inexpensive! My friend said this is a very popular restaurant among Thai grad students, so that must say something. Highly recommended for your stomach and your wallet!! If you have ""buffet"" in your name, would it be unreasonable to expect a buffet on a Saturday evening? I don't think so - so imagine my surprise after driving quite a distance to get there only to find out that they're only a buffet on weekdays. \r \r I can't fault the food that we did order - it was very good; in fact far better than typical Chinese buffet fare - but it just wasn't what we were looking for. We had our 4 year old girl with us, it was late (for us) and we just wanted a Chinese buffet so we could get in and out fast , and hopefully find things that our little picky eater would eat. This place doesn't have a kid's menu. \r \r I'm at a loss on how to review this place. I am really irked by the 'buffet' thing, but the food was good, and very reasonably priced. Service was as expected, very friendly but I had to request water refills. Good menu recommendation from the waitress. (Can't remember the name, I think she called it 'Drunken noodles' - wide, flat spicy noodles) Chicken Satay and fried rice were very good as well. I am an expert on Thai cusine and usually it means breaking this poor grad student's pocket to get something awesome... but not in this case, I eat at Thai China at least 2-3 times per week and during the past 3 months I HAVE NEVER BEEN DISSATISFIED. The service, the food, the price= 5 star rating from me, by the way most dishes are around $7.00... and if you like strong, but sweet, grandma's tea, you can get that here also! Kind of a hole in the wall place, but the best Thai food I've had since Southern California! Very reasonably priced. I have had several Thai dishes, all of which were excellent. My husband had the Pho which was also excellent. One of our favorite places. Do yourself a favor and get some Thai at this place! more

Usually, I say good food is worth a high price. In the Triangle area, Thai food is among the higher priced cuisine. I've paid around $16 for typical Thai fare - noodle dishes, curries, soups. That all changed when I found Thai China. It's in an easily over-looked corner of the most mundane shopping center in Durham. Do yourself a favor and skip any Ameri-Chinese fastfood dish. Go straight for the Thai. Everything I've tried is good. Phad Kee Mao, Tom Yum, Phad Thai, Paneang Curry... sorry about the spelling. It's all half the price of what other restaurants are charging and just as good if not better. Ambience is charming but not opulent. Service is pretty ordinary. But the food... excellent. Definitely recommend to anyone with open and adventurous taste but modest wallet. Pros: food. what else. Cons: location is a bit lacking but made up by the fabulous food. more
