This school is a blessing 2/15/2012

I have read over some criticism of the principal at this school and I must say that I am in shock. The current principal at this school is beyond amazing. My sons do nothing but brag on the teachers and staff of this school. I currently have two children here and I just love it. I have also seen show bad reviews on the education level at this establishment. I must say that I am a private school graduate myself. I also was a dean list student of a private college. My eldest son is an honor roll student of one of the oldest Catholic schools in our area. The education that my younger children are recieving at Terrytown Academy is more then approiate for their grade level. The classes are small and very personable. They nuture children personalities as well as develope much needed study skills for the future. In addition to this they have taught my sons the importance of time management. This is something that I appreciate a great deal. They help children to believe in themselves and to never give up even when things get hard. They do not like to see any child fail. When my middle son needed help with maturing and developing his indepence in academics they were there for him like a family. His previous school offered anything but this support. I guess it is easy to appreciate these teachers knowing that there are so many who just want to collect a paycheck. My famlies academic success record runs long and now thanks to the staff at Terrytown Academy I have complete confidence that my children will keep that alive. more

Beware: School Faculty Writing Review 9/12/2010

I don't know where these get what they are saying about Terrytown Academy, but for the past few years, this place is a desert wasteland to take money of innocent parents who cannot afford a better private school but believe private is better than public. \r \r In my experience, the school year is shorter than legally required school years. The teachers do not teach anything on or above the level of the grade the child is attending. And in my experience, teachers mark homework assignments and even test items as correct when they are not. They pad the grades so the students look like they are excelling and the parents are happy. I knew a boy with severe learning disabilities who attended and somehow managed to make straight As. However, his standardized test scores were extremely below average. And when he transferred to another local private school, he flunked out in the first nine weeks. \r \r I warn you to beware of adminstrators that immediately turn to verbal abuse and accusations at a single question. \r \r Also, when children are learning how to write their ABCs in second grade, you know the teacher isn't teaching state standards (I'm talking about print, not even learning cursive yet).\r \r Do yourself a favor, choose any other private school or public school in the area and enrich your child's education with homework help and extracurricular activities. However, leaving your child at home in front of pbs everyday would be better for your child than this school! more

Good Private School on Westbank 5/30/2010

My children attend Terrytown Academy and we love it. The education hey are receiving is very good. Tuition price very reasonable compared to all other private schools on westbank. At lisadey, all text books are now new! The administration is always very helpful and caring to the students. I would recommend Terrytown Academy to anyone looking for a private school. Pros: Good Private School more

Every Child has a voice 4/7/2008

Dear Parents:\r In today's society you live your life and hope that you make an impact on bettering the world as you know it. In order to face the tasks that challenge you it is important that you received a good foundation in your youth to assist you in making the decisions in becoming successful in all of your dreams and goals. It has been my experience in the last sixteen years that Terrytown Academy provides this solid foundation for its students daily. Anytime that I am able to visit the school I walk away with more support, respect, education, and motivation to succeed. In my career I visit all types of learning institutions; private, parochial, and public. I meet hardworking educators wherever I go, but the unyielding committment from the educators at TTA always make a lasting impact in my thoughts. These educators take care to give each of their students the attention they need. They spend 35 hours a week if not more teaching above state required curriculum, training, mentoring, and providing a caring positive environment with each student. \r Congratulations to those TTA teachers for going the extra mile! To make a final decision in choosing the best school for your child I challenge you to go the extra mile- observe! At dismissal you see all these happy faces waiting to tell guardians about their day at school, or eager happy faces to tell a daycare worker how they spent their day. If time permits take initiative to be invited to a TTA graduation. I know parenting has unbelievable daily concerns, but know that your child at TTA is a guaranteed investment! more

A Wonderful experience for my family 4/7/2008

Both my children and now their children have attended this school which by the way was establised in 1969 which should certainly tell anyone they must be doing something right in order to stay in operation this long. The administration, teachers and other members of the organization have shown nothing but love and consideration for my children along with a great education. My grandaughter is currently in one of the better catholic high schools in New Orleans and is in all honors classes. Many students have received academic scholorships when entering highh school. Yes the facilithy is an older one but is always maintained . I as a human being find it enormously repulsive that someone would have the audacity to call other people common. To Lisadaye it seems like you are the one that is discourteous, unprofessional and as you put it lacking of class. Please check your spelling before you write another article demeaning people. Obviously these people have chosen to work at Terrytown Academy and not in the public school system. God Bless America Pros: Dedicated administration and faculty. more

A Private School That Could Make A Difference 2/19/2008

My child attended TTA and I was very satisfied. She received a very good education from P.K. through 8th grade. She attended a catholic high school with no problems. Now I have a grandson attending and he also is getting a good education. The staff seems to be very caring and looks out for the best interest of all children. The facility is older but is maintained well. As long as my child and now grandson is in a safe environment and recieving a solid education that's all that matters. The tuition is affordable with not any surprise increases. I would recommend TTA to any one looking for a small school, staff that does not label children, and the education is good. Avoid the Hassle 12/5/2007

I was very astounded at the level of professionalism that was displayed. . The books are very out dated which gives me a strong sense that best practices are not put in place as it directly relates to student?s learning. I presuppose that the teachers are not highly qualified as stated buy the ?No Child left Behind?. It perplexes me as to why highly qualified teachers would pass so many public, charter, or independent schools to teach at a school that pays the bare minimum in salaries. . The classrooms, the books, the desks, the bathrooms, and the entire facility is ran down and is in need of major repairs. No one in administration has a sense of class, diplomacy or professionalism. . They are very discourteous, common and not too articulate. A message should be sent out to parents to really look into private schools before enrolling their children. Public schools are by far the best because they are certainly following the curriculum that is aligned with the state and the federal government. They and are hiring teachers that are qualified and prepared to bring students to new levels in learning and achievement. Parents must look beyond a good image and look toward the importance of a solid education for their children. I typically think majority of the children need an IEP and would be in special education class but since they attend a private school tat govern tier own rules, you are automatically mainstreamed because these types of facilities do not accommodate ADHD, Dyslexia, Mild Retardation, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Behaviors, Mental Illness, etc. . Something to think about.\r more

Very satisfied 10/21/2005

I was very satisfied with the school. My son loved the school (he was a preschool student). The school was affordable and my son excelled in his class. There are small class sizes which are important in beginning classes. I don't like the fact that there is only one class for higher grade levels and no honor classes. Lastly, I thought the school should have better communications with the parents in reference to holidays and closings of the school. more

Academic Program is good, but there isn't any hot lunches served to children. They can bring warm-ups or their own lunch, but there isn't a cafeteria where the children can buy hot meals like other schools. Also, the school hours have been 8:25 am - 2:45 pm since my granddaughter has been going there at the age of three years old. She is now 9 years old, the new principal changed the hours from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm. I think this is ridiculous. Parents are accustomed to bringing their children to school at the hours mentioned above. It worked all these years, why change?????? more
