PNW BBQ 2/17/2011

After eating here a few times and talking with the friendly employees I've learned that this BBQ is true and homemade by hardworkers. If you by chance catch them when its PACKED, they really go into overdrive. It may take some time/patience but it's worth it. Most of the food is all made in the kitchen so sometimes it may change taste just a tad depending on who makes it. Maybe a little more pepper or less garlic etc. The baby back ribs are mouth watering. They fall right off the bone and melt in the mouth. The pulled pork is tasty too specially with the hot sauce! yum. I've tasted the Burgers which are exceptional. My partner loved the blackened catfish and charbroiled oysters. I have never been impressed with the beef ribs. They just don't compare to the baby backs. Pork is definitely my favorite. full bar with lots of choices! pricing isn't bad but not great. what you would expect i suppose. mmm cocktails, beer, BBQ. lets go OH, and by the way to the blog before mine, maybe this is pnw bbq, did you ever hear of a telephone? to get in touch with how HORRID your experience was? or maybe even take the time to go back in, tell someone, and then possibly be redeemed by someone else that works there? more

Maybe this is BBQ in the PNW 10/1/2010

After eating at Tennessee Red's I tried to find a contact email on their website so I could write to them about my experience. There is no way to contact them through their website. Too bad since I really don't like to air dirty laundry in public.\r \r I go into any restaurant expecting the chef/cooks actually want to turn out decent food. So I was so very disappointed with the meal I had. I ordered their Beef rib plate that came with 3 ribs, fries, and cole slaw.\r \r Each rib had no more that 2 oz of meat, all of which was way overcooked and dy beyond description. It was spread out over each rib so thin that there was no way to cut anything off with a knive and fork, so I ended up chewing on each rib and had to really struggle to pull anything edible off each. What I did get was tough and chewy. not what I was expecting.\r \r I love fries, and the ""taste"" of these fries were quite unique, but in a good way, Tennessee must use some kind of spice as these seemed to have a bit of a kick. However, they were cold and limp. I can understand a cook sending out a steak that's not cooked to the customer's desire since the cook cannot really see inside the steak, but fries? Perhaps the cook who put these on my plate was blind? Kidding aside, this meant that the cook knowingly sent fries to a customer that he/she would not eat themselves. I belive I was curtious to my waiter so I cannot believe the cook was getting back at me for something I did? Perhaps he/she just doesn't want to cook at that restaurant any more.\r The only passable food was their cole slaw, quite creamy and a bit tangy - but it wasn't $12 good.\r I cannot comment on the rest their menue items so perhaps others have had better experiences than I. That's good for Tennessee, but I know I wlll not go back there.\r more

Mismatch 8/16/2010

They advertise award winning ribs and the smoke smells good when you go by but it's just not so! On three occasions the beef ribs just were not up to par. One night I took some slightly elder friends for drinks and dinner and the waitress was al bit put off because they took their time considering their order and asked for a specific cocktail wherein she acted like it was too much trouble. Here's a positive the gumbo was very good. Suggestions, bring some prices down, try a little harder with the service and don't forget to smile - each customer no matter what their age should be treated equally. more

Seriously? 8/15/2010

I just picked up an order from this place. I got some of their brisket with the memphis sauce. I opened it when I got home, took two bites and threw the entree out.\r \r I'm an opened minded eater, but gross is not something I look for in a sauce.\r \r more

Great place to watch the game!! 4/20/2010

My sweetie and have gone to Tennessee Red's twice and got great service both times. Both times we had the drink specials and the were pretty good and only five bucks. We ordered ribs. They smoke theirs. The ribs tasted great the next day as left overs. I do prefer mine wet, but they did have good flavor. The beans and rice however, could use some help. What we really really enjoyed was the burger topped with pulled pork. We shared one and it was delicious. We are going back soon to have another. I think i might get my own next time, hehe... We also love that they have flat screen tv's all over the place. We are Blazers fans and each time we went we got to watch the game, woohoo!!!!! GO Blazers!!!! I am looking foward to trying some of the unique appetizers that i saw on the menu as well, great place to watch the game. Pros: i think the barmaids are awesome and friendly Cons: not the best ribs more

Completely disappointing 4/11/2010

We Went to Tennessee Red's on a Saturday about 4pm. We were hoping for a good meal, we were completely disappointed. We go in and the place looks like some dive bar but I think well lets give it a try maybe the food is great. After finding out their all out of pulled pork, we order, I ordered a rack of baby back ribs and my wife ordered brisket and drinks for us both. There is almost no one in the place, a few minutes later I see an order placed to be delivered, the waitress is sitting behind the bar with her back to the room, 5 or 10 minutes later the cook comes out and tells the waitress to deliver the food. My wife thought the brisket was fine. My ribs were ok but ribs should be cooked with the sauce on not on the side, cooked on and the sauce can caramelize and penetrate into the meat, macaroni and cheese was blah, fries were greasy, cornbread was blah. We asked for more sauce waitress says ok never comes back. Would have liked a another round of drinks but I am unable to easily get waitresses attention. Finally walk up to bar and ask her for our bill. The worst service I have had in my life, I was trying to think of some place worse and couldn’t come up with one. I don’t usually write reviews but I had to this time. Will never go back! Cons: Seedy, Unclean, No service. more

Tennessee Red's BBQ 3/27/2010

I tried Tennessee Red's BBQ one afternoon and was not impressed... I have heard good things about this place but did not see it or taste it when i visited... I ordered the pulled pork, the presentation off the food was great. The pork was not soaked in BBQ sauce which allows you to really taste the smoked meat. Usually this would be a good thing for BBQ, however the pork was horrible!!!!!! Greasy, oily, or some adjective that would be unappealing... \r I did not finish the meat because it just was not good. The side dishes need work as well. But at least they were not as bad as the meat and I was able to get something to eat for lunch. \r \r I will try it again to make sure that the one experience was not a mistake or an off day for the food. Pros: Central Location..... Server was really nice... Cons: Oily, greasy, no flavor more

Used to be decent, now it's just DISGUSTING 3/3/2010

I went to Tennessee Red's a couple years ago when I first came to town and it was pretty good. I live close by, so I took my son there for dinner a couple weeks ago when he came into town and it was just awful. The ribs have WAY too much pepper on them and they are TOUGH! Ribs done properly should be tender, that requires a sufficient amount of brining time before smoking and cooking. The brisket was tough as well, and the corn muffins were hard, lumpy, and disgusting. Even the server agreed they were horrible. The cole slaw wasn't fresh and the red beans and rice was nothing to write home about. And what's with putting all the sides in little cups? Makes eating them nearly impossible without spillage. The ""spicy"" Memphis-style sauce is way too hot to be called spicy (I eat a lot of hot food, not a wimp, so I know what I'm talking about!) I guess the pulled pork sliders were okay, I didn't order any but my son said they were good, however, he could barely breathe because they were smothered in the ""spicy"" Memphis-style sauce. All this disgusting food set us back about $45 too, so it was NOT cheap, we didn't even have beers. And certainly no one offered to offer any kind of remedy for my complaint about the corn muffins. Who the hell is the chef here? He should be ASHAMED. Pros: Service wasn't horrible, but wasn't great Cons: The food WAS horrible more

HORRIBLE 2/1/2010

i am writing this as i sit here. first and last time here. horrible service. tried to cancel my food order once I saw how distgushing the kitchen and cook was. the server (red head- avoid her!) said ok, then never told the cook not to make it. didn't touch the food, absolutely the worst experience EVER. I'm a server and I love supporting Portland bars. but this was unreal. save yourself! more

Excellent Pulled Pork Sandwich! 5/11/2009

I have lived and worked near by for many years, in fact since well before the original Tennesee Red started the place. It was amazing with literally a line around the corner for lunch, but the inside was a real dump back then. Well the inside is cleaned up and expanded, with a nice bar and excellent service generally. It is very important to Mary that you leave happy and satified. One of my faves is the pulled pork sandwich which is the best I have ever had. Excellent flavor and juicy. The sides are generally good, I wish they had a few more; the original place had at least 20, but the selection is still good. We eat here at least once a week. Some of the apps make a fine lunch. I think the fries are the best anywhere. The bad reviews have to be from the competition, this place is great! Pros: Lotsa Saucy choices Cons: On street parking more

Ribs need work 5/5/2009

We ate at TR's a long time ago, and loved the ribs. Recently we ate there and the ribs have really gone downhill. Service was great, atmosphere good, sides good too. But the ribs .. this is what the place is supposed to be known for? Pros: Good funky atmosphere Cons: Ribs more

Blah 2/7/2009

Smelled great as we walked in but thats where it ended. Got ribs and a brisket sandwich. Neither one had any flavor! Mac and cheese was bland. Im from Georgia/Tennessee so I know BBQ and this is not it! Decent fried okra and corn muffins. I would come here for a beer but not to eat. more

best pulled pork sandwich around 1/30/2009

great bbq, great atmosphere, never disappointed in the food. try the fried broccoli and the pulled pork sandwich is a must! Pros: parking, service, BBQ more

BEST IN TOWN 1/29/2009

Seriously love this place and can't get enough of it. I make a trip across town every single Thursday and every time I go away happy and full. The service is amazing and Mary is the B-E-S-T. Go for the happy hour and stay to watch the game. more

Great improvement 11/7/2008

I recently went into Reds with some friends after a years hiatus and was very impressed with the changes made there. The ribs were delicious and the waitress was super friendly. I don't know what all the bad reviewers are talking about, we had a great dinner and stayed to listen to the live blues. I guess they brought back the Tues. night karaoke so I will definately be returning. Pros: friendly service Cons: parking a little rough more

This place is THE WORSE! Should close down. 8/31/2008

Ugh! Where to start? New manager New Owner. Okay we thought we'd give it another try. The last visit under the old guard was awful. Well, last night's visit made that seem like a joy.\r The service is the worsed. If you aren't friends of the bartender, owner or manager, you can forget about getting service. And who lets a bunch of LOUD screamng kids into a bar?!!!\r We waited for an hour for food that NEVER can. The bartender said ""oops I forgot. I was busy talking to my friends."" WHAT THE HELL!!!\r They have sort of cleaned up the place. But no amount of paint and new furniture will make up for such crappy service and trashy uppity atomsphere. You guys are a dirty little Barbeque place, where do you get off being all exclusive? Hope those folks can support you. 'Cause I will not be suggesting this place, and in fact I will be telling everyone about this experience. I'd be sending you an email, but you don't have one...maybe cause you really really dont care. Well, guess what if you go away, I don't think anyone else will care either. Learn to run a business. Your customers are way more important to your business than the bartender's friend, two of whom work at T.Reds! Good Greif Pros: Close to my house Cons: Where do I start? The snooty exclusive ""you aren't my friend so go hang"" service more

used to be great..now the food is awful! 8/18/2008

We went to T red's last week after not going for MONTHS! we walked in and the decor had changed (which is a plus) and the server was super friendly and fun...HOWEVER...they no longer have the yummy chicken salad or the WONDERFUL, TO DIE FOR jo-jo's...and the MEAT...EWWWWWWWWWWW!\r THE FOOD WAS AWFUL! we ordered several happy hour items to try and none of it was good. the chicken strips had ZERO flavor, the pork sliders and ribs tasted like fake smoke flavor w a little fish mixed in. The meat was sooo fatty and smokey tasting we couldn't even eat it. the fried broccoli was the only thing that was edible. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE FOR FOOd WHAT-SO-EVER...but if you're just wanting a cocktail and a lovely server then check it out. Pros: FANTASTIC SERVER AND GREAT LOOKIN' LIL PLACE Cons: AWFUL AWFUL FOOD! more

Huge Disappointment 7/29/2008

We visited Tennessee Reds Restaurant this evening at 5:00 pm, and was very disappointed. First of all, we asked about barbecued baked beans (which they did not carry), but was told the red beans and rice was very good. We decided to give it a try, only to be told they had ran out of this side dish. We then selected the collard greens as a side dish, and was told they only had enough left for one side order (I finally settled for the okra side dish). When our orders of beef ribs and country pork ribs arrived, they were dry, tough and hardly edible. They were cut such that I could not even cut through my ribs individually to pick them up and eat them. When asked if we were enjoying our ribs I commented that I couldn't cut through them. She offered to take them back and have them cut through so that I could pick them up and eat them. When I got them back I still was not able to get the meat off the bones to eat . We are rib eaters who normally love most ribs and can't get enough, but not in this situation. Unfortunately, we ended up leaving over half of our ribs. Pros: Parking and ambience Cons: Poor example of barbecued ribs more
