Not sure why anyone would give this alleged ""Italian Restaurant"" more than about 2 stars. As a true Italian, trust me, you are better off going to Paparazzi in Wellsley where fo...

Very high prices ..for what? 9/27/2007

I'm a redblodded Italian and have eaten at the Tartufo. I'm not at all impressed due to high prices for what you get. Also, some of the stuff is ""Americanized"" for the dumb people that have no clue about Italian food and that cannot cook. On our last trip (we tried the joint 3 times) in Aug 2007, on a Sat night....it was not good. I asked for the veal chop grilled and nothing on it - it comes out ""Americanized"" with this awful sweet tasting sauce on it! The big waitor with the mustache was playing games and trying to be funny and cordial - but he could care less except for his tip. My wife's pasta came out barely warm....certainly not ""al dente"", it was undercooked....was a tiny portion...and overpriced..\r What a racket ....they got their customers ""buffaloed"" with ""wana-be"" authetic Italian and terrible quality control...\r And the wine.............greatly overpriced and no better than ""jug wine"".\r Maybe it was a bad night for the cook and waiters, but I won't be going again.\r By the way, on my 1st trip there in July, the food seemed to be preety good....and went downhill by the 2nd trip...and ""off the chart"" on my last trip..\r \r You can give it a try..as you may end up with a good night and good food..but you will find it overpriced and not consistent! By the way - sit far from the bar (noise, traffic) and stay downstairs (better service). Pros: good area Cons: too many to list more

Food OK, prices high, waitors mixed bag 9/26/2007

We ate at Tartufo's last week. It was a mixed bag at best. The place caters to people of jewish faith or j - ws (no slur intended) as they are regular customers with no clue on cooking but love the Italian food and the pretended interest by waiters. Food is fairly good but about 30% overpriced - particularly for small portions you get. A pasta dish is far too high. For God's sake a pound of pasta..good Italian pasta (Barilla) is about $1.30 !! It's the cheapest ingredient but good old Dante - chef/owner - jacks up price out of site! Then there is the older waitor with fake ""caring"" to get a good tip -- GIVE ME A BREAK!! Our food was a mixed bag, some came out cool (sat too long?) and other came out OK. They usually pass out the nice crunchy french bread slices with a dish of olive oil - but we were given the softer lousy bread. We have gone there about 5 times and it's definetly incosistenf - from very good to below avearge but always ""pricy"". It's probably worth a trip, but be sure to insist on good french bread (toasted) slices and fresh warm food. Be fussy and let them know it. If you have to - get DANTE the chef and tell him you are very fussy. Pros: sometimes great food Cons: sometimes poor service or late food more

Overpriced food and awful service. 8/31/2007

I ate at Tartufo last night, and I was appalled by the horrendous service we received. It took us well over an hour to get our food. After about 40 minutes, I asked the waiter if it was coming out, and he said that they would be bringing it out any moment. Half an hour later, we finally received our main courses, which were stone cold by that point. The restaurant was far from busy, so that's not an excuse. Also, bear in mind that our dishes were not hard to make - penne with meatballs and veal scallopini (I've made that dish at home, it took me 25 minutes, and it tasted a lot better than what we were served). By that time, I was so upset by the service that I had lost much of my appetite. After finishing the substandard meal, I asked for the cheque, which took them another 15 minutes, even though I told them that we were in a hurry. I was surprised to see that two main courses, a glass of wine and a coke came out to be $60. The penne alone was $22, an exorbitant amount to pay for such a dish. I left no tip, and after we left, the waiter came running out after us, asking us why we stiffed him. I told him it was pretty obvious, since other than to take our order and bring us our food and check, he never once came and asked us if we needed more drinks or if everything was alright, nor did he tell us that the kitchen would take so long with our dishes.\r \r I am never going to be eating there again. more

VERY GOOD PLACE--one of best around 7/25/2007

Skip the antipasto-it's an $11.95 ripoff with only a couple of coldcut half slices, 2-3 tiny pieces of cheese, a half artichoke...a ripoff in terms of value .\r The food is expensive but good and authentic. GREAT bread and olive oil to dip it.\r Chef (DANTE) is from Souther Italy...used to be head chef at old MARINO restaurant in Cambridge and in USA about 10 years....pricy but very good food and atmosphere and wait staff..\r \r We should know..we are Italian and comments shared by about 18 of us.. Pros: food and service Cons: price/value more

Tremendous service and an outstanding meal 7/13/2007

-I have dined at Tartufo numerous times and have to say that my experience has been great each and every time. I really don't understand the source of these bad reviews. I have dined as a couple, in a large group and as a single at the bar - Alberto our favorite wiater is great and the couple that own and manage the establishment are first class. Pros: A tremndous dining experience each and everytime - Waiters are great Cons: Not located within the city more

Your better off trying some place else 2/3/2007

I probably should have read the reviews of this place on Citysearch before I tried this place. I had a very similar experience to the other couple who gave this place a bad review. No believe me, I'm not usually one to complain about things, but when its just this bad, I feel compelled to share. First off, service was lousy. Took close to 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we sat down. The place wasn't even that crowded! Asked if we wanted wine, we weren't in the mood so he takes the glasses and wine bottle on the table, and just walks off. How about something else to drink? Good luck. We started with bruschetta, which was on brick hard bread. Didn't finish it. My wife had the pasta dish which wasn't bad but not really worth the price. The chicken was tough, and again not really worth it. The waiter spent most of the evening at the bar chatting it up with some friends then checking to see if anybody needed anything. $60 for two people and awful service = never going back there again. They get a 2 because the guy who played the guitar was good. Can't fault him. Pros: Guitar player was good Cons: Everything else was awful more

Horrendous customer service 6/25/2006

My husband and I made the mistake of going to Tartufo for our first anniversary. The waiter was extremely rude. He brought my husband the wrong dish, and then proceeded to argue when we told him it was wrong. He refused to take it back and get the correct meal. On top of that, when my husband asked for a side of pasta since it was supposed to be part of his meal, the waiter brought him the tiniest dish AND charged us for it. We brought the problem up to the manager, and we received the same treatment. They had absolutely no desire to make sure their customers were satisfied.\r \r Not to mention the prices for not very good food were exorbitant. My chicken was so tough, I needed a steak knife to cut it. more

Too bad 11/18/2005
