Confetti cookies are good, but don't buy the cakes. Bad service! 8/19/2007

I used to be a huge fan of Sweet Mandy B's, especially for their confetti cookie! It's a soft yummy sugar cookie with confetti sprinkles on top. However, I have noticed lately that the staff seems rushed and are often rude. Also, they don't seem to take orders well either. I ordered 2 birthday cakes in July, which were quit expensive totalling almost $60 for both. When we cut into the cakes they were both WRONG! One was supposed to be white cake with white frosting with strawberry filling and it was yellow cake with white frosting and NO strawberries (I even paid extra for the strawberries). The second cake was supposed to be chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and it was YELLOW cake with chocolate frosting! I mean come on! Did they only have yellow cake left?! The yellow cake was aweful. I've yet to go back and haven't even bothered telling them that the order was completely wrong. Pros: Good cookies Cons: Bad Service more

Peanut Butter & Jelly Cake Best Cake/Cupcake in Chicago! 6/6/2007

You absolutely have to have the Peanut Butter and Jelly Cake!! I prefer it with white cake but if you like chocolate cake I'm sure that would be delicious just the same. It is hands down the best cake I've ever had and all my friends and family agree with me! I showcased this cake at my b-day party and it was a winner with everyone who had some. They all agreed it was the best cake they've ever had. \r \r If you don't need a huge cake, they even make PB&J cupcakes! Those are equally as good. Though, since they don't make them all the time, and they are so popular, when they do make them, you better go early because they go very fast! \r \r Definitely my favorite bakery in Chicago hands down! Cupcakes worthy of the Magnolia comparison 12/22/2006

My friend and I (who are from Milwaukee) traveled to Chicago for her birthday yesterday. She would have loved to go to NYC's Magnolia bakery (featured on S*x and the City) for her birthday cupcake, but Chicago is where we were able to celebrate. And we don't do the whole Michigan Avenue thing in Chicago, we like exploring the lesser known areas (so much character, variety and elclectic boutiques).\r \r I found Sweet Mandy B's on Citysearch the night before and we went there based on a reviewer's comparison of Sweet Mandy B's to Magnolia in NYC. We used public transportation to get there (Brown line to Armitage). We had trouble finding the bakery once we stepped off the El because we didn't know our directionals. Quite some time later after stopping a few times to get directions we found the bakery. It was FANTASTIC!\r \r The staff was courteous, they were mostly busy preparing yummy goodies, but when we talked to them they were wonderfully warm and friendly. The cupcake was incredible (we thought about taking a bunch of cupcakes home to Milwaukee but decided against toting the precious cargo around for the rest of the day on the buses, Els and the Amtrak ride home), the ambiance was too cute, and the offerings were plentiful. There were many choices at Sweet Mandy B's that you just don't find in most bakeries. I chose to take a Smore in my purse to nosh on the train ride back to Miwaukee. I don't know how they made a Smore so transportable but it held up well in my purse the rest of the day and was a sweet end to a fun day.\r \r You CANNOT skip Sweet Mandy B's! Pros: Cupcakes! Old Fashioned Style Bakery. 11/7/2006

This is a great little spot to have in the neighborhood for when you need a sweet little treat. Their breakfast items such as scones, muffins and coffee cakes are excellent though be warned it you don't get there bright and early on a weekend morning you will be out of luck. You would think they would bake more so they wouldn't run out by 9 am. The cupcakes are okay and I have found that the white is much better than the chocolate. The chocolate tends to be dry. They have a decent cookie called the Ranger Cookie filled with all sorts of yummy things. We did have an excellent Coconut Creme Cake for my b'day though it was a tad too sweet for my taste it was good nonetheless and was devoured in days. Keep in mind this isn't a fancy, French style bakery. This is a made like Mom use to make style bakery - more cute than pretty - and sometimes like mom they have an off day too. I think they are trying to fashion themselves like Magnolia Bakery in Manhattan - which if you have been there you will know that no one does it quite like Magnolia does! Too cute! 10/28/2006

Finally stopped into Mandy B's....CUTE! Everyone was super nice and helpful. I had a Vanilla Steamer that was perfectly sweet and very hot! AND, I got a Halloween cookie and 2 cherry macaroons for my husband & I. The cookies was a basic sugar cookie - good. The macaroons were a different story...YUMMY!!!! They were crunchy on the outside and really moist on the inside and the cherries were huge! TOO MUCH - I was in heaven for a couple of seconds! Pros: Great pastry selection! Cons: No soups or munchies that weren't sweet. more

Not the place 9/15/2006

I visited Sweet Mandy B's twice. The first visit was just O.K. The taste is not consisitent, and customer service is not a priority. However, the second visit really concerned me. All of the baked goods on the counter were uncovered and flys were all over the place even landing on a cake one of the staff members was decoration. And to top it all off one of the cashiers with an open scab sore on his finger was touching money and serving the baked goods. I called to share my concerns with a manager and went back in that night and nothing changed. I guess they don't care about sanitation. Great local bakery 7/20/2006

My first experience at Sweet Mandy B's was picking up a birthday cake for my sister, and the service was amazing, they were able to provide a cake for me with exactly what I wanted immediately, and it was a great cake, very moist, frosting was rich, it just really worked! Thus after having such a great first time, I treat myself every now and then to either a Velvet cupcake (by the way far surpasses Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes) or their very fun confetti cookies that are so doughey and delicious! I can't believe I'm the only one 3/15/2006

I was really looking forward to trying this bakery. I was really disppointed. I tried two of the samples, I should have used those as examples. I had the chocolate chip cookie cream sandwich. My hands were greasy after holding it. The cookies did taste like my moms, maybe tollhouse recipe or gold medal flour, I don't know. I also got a slice of cheesecake to go. It was stuffed into a plastic to go container, not even resembling a slice anymore. The topping was some kind of strawberry jelly. Maybe little kids like that. The crust on the cheese mush was wet. Cute, Yummy Bakery 11/10/2005

My first experience w/Sweet Mandy B's was ordering a lemon cake for a baby shower at work. It was delicious! The lemon curd had just the right amount of tartness, the cake was moist and the vanilla butter cream was yummy. And to top it off it was a cute cake. I will definitely will be coming back. I also brought a brownie which was unforuntalely disappointing. I like moist, fudgy brownies and this was not it. Despite this, I would definitely come back and get more cake! The Best Bakery in Chicago or the worlds maybe 9/9/2005

We got the banana chocolate chip layer cake with buttercream frosting. I haven't stopped dreaming about it ever since. It was absolutly amazing. So moist I don't think it had a crumb. We also ordered a carmel apple tart like thing. It was also very amazing. Everything is super rich and very sugary. This is a place I know that I will never be let down. The Perfect Cupcakes! 5/5/2005

I moved to Chicago from NYC and was in major need of a local cupcake fix to fill the void of Magnolia bakery (As seen on S&TC). Sweet Mandy B's delivered! In addition to the cupcakes being phenomenal! Their cookies and other desserts are delicious as well. Not to mention that the place is adorable and has great late night hours! This cute little bakeries cupcakes pack a BIG punch on flavor and satisfaction. They are truely the best cupcakes i have ever had by far. THey are moist and colorful. The frosting i believe is thier signature because it tastes home made. Everything in this bakery was amazing as a matter of fact...the triple chocolate cake, banana cream pie, macroons...etc. THey also do cakes which i like to think of as a giant cupcake.. I love this place and you will NOT be dissapointed. more

If you see a line, don't let it discourage you from the sweets. I have been working my way through each and every treat and so far, so very good.
