Best

I am a regular here! I eat here every week and I love it! The fish is very fresh and they have good service.

I've been here a handful of times, always thinking that maybe it will be better, but it has never been anything but dissapointing to me. I feel like it's extremely average, consid...

Delicious 2/27/2006

We find a way to visit Katsu-Ya every week - either location is excellent. Favorites: Crispy rice with spicy tuna; crab hand roll; Crispy sesame tuna (if you say "no avocado" you get much more tuna!); Tuna with warm spinach. The chefs are really friendly and helpful, so we recommend sitting at the sushi bar. And if you have room, the green tea tempura ice cream is wonderful! Arrive at 5:30 and beat the wait! Pros: Fresh fish, Clever presentation, Friendly staff Cons: Waiting more

The BEST Sushi in LA 1/7/2006

I've been to much fancier/pricier places and this place beats them all hands down. I only ever order from the Specials Board, since that's where the best stuff is. Sashimi is excellent, always fresh and tasty. The rolls are phenomenal. I highly reccommend the Blue Crab hand roll...it is the best hand roll I have ever tried and you can only get it here! I also higly recommentd the Robert Roll(spicy tuna, spicy shrimp, avocado and other goodies I can't recall) and the rock shrimp tempura is a unique and tasty favorite. This place is always packed, even on week nights so call ahead and ask for the Encino location instead of the Studio City one. The Encino venue is much nicer. more

better rolls than actual sushi 11/29/2005

like my title says, the rolls and specials they have are much better than the actual sushi. sushi here is mediocre quality at best, and the variety leaves something lacking. the rolls and special paltes are actually what are pretty good here. the albacore and fried onions plate is actually my favorite thing here, although it is doused in ponzu. this is a good place to go with a group of people to just have a bunch of sake and some rolls, not when you're looking for a quality sushi dining experience. the main drawback is the crowds, weekends get really hectic and the wait can be long. but at least they have benches outside so you can sit and wait. Pros: good specials Cons: long wait, mediocre sushi, sashim more

Wonderful! 11/27/2005

If you don't mind a wait, you will be delighted to find what a wonderful place this is. The strip mall location was a little bit of a deterent, though the food made up for the area. Fresh fish, simple menu, good stuff! more

Sushi that I can never get sick of 10/28/2005

When I think of sushi I think Katsu-ya. It is definitely the best that I have even had. When I eat at other sushi restaurants I compare it to Katsu-ya. Not the encino location but the Studio City one is the best. Well worth the wait. Pros: food, star slightings, friendly Cons: long wait more

Dry, Old, and Tasteless 9/26/2005

Creative presentation & colorful sauces mask actual food (dry, old, & tasteless). Items are highly priced for this reason. 1st few visits, I was not seated promptly. Parking is crowded even for valet; attendants have to run across street. Pros: creative presentation Cons: dry food, old food, tasteless food more

Sushi to compare all others to... 3/21/2005

I compare all sushi to the sushi at Katsu-ya. If you like inventive, fresh, delicious sushi, this is the place for you. it's a hole-in-the-wall place, but the ambiance is not why you go here. I recommend: crispy sesame tuna, spicy tuna on crispy rice, the honey handrolls, tuna sashimi with japanese salsa, and many more. Pros: best sushi Cons: park on street, always busy more
