Stephanie's on Newbury 9/21/2006

While in Boston, our concierge recommended Stephanie’s Restaurant for dinner. We walked from the hotel on a nice, fall evening and had an absolutely wonderful experience along with a very tasty dinner. When you approach Stephanie’s, you walk through their expansive outdoor seating area on the beautiful and exclusive Newbury Street. Upon entering, you’re greeted by a very friendly yet professional staff member and visually treated by a roaring fireplace and soft, ambient lighting spilling onto luxurious dark wood surfaces. The staff member didn’t ask for our name when inviting us to take a seat in front of the fireplace to wait for a table, yet he got everyone seated in the order in which they had arrived and the wait time was so minimal it’s not worth mentioning. Stephanie’s is not the type of place where they’re yelling names out and creating chaos. Instead, the staff there is each a positive contributor to the adult ambiance. There are no “Happy, happy birthday!” songs being screeched out several times an hour! Thank GOD. Our meal was absolutely flawless and our waiter’s exuberance was nothing short of delightful. I had THE best spinach salad I have ever had in my entire life! My fiancé had the Italian Sausage Orchiette which he said was fabulous. I was torn between the salad and the salmon, so our waiter suggested I have some salmon on top of the salad! Excellent!! The breads brought to the table to tide us over before the meal were also very different and delectable. My mouth is watering just remembering that meal! Check out Stephanie’s web site http://www.stephaniesonnewbury.com/ where they not only have their menus, directions, reviews, etc, but also a virtual tour. Our concierge categorized the restaurant as “great American food” and Stephanie’s web site calls it “sophisticated comfort food.” I think they’re both right, but I simply call it “perfect”. Oh, how I wish we had a Stephanie’s in the Seattle area! more

Bad Attitudes can ruin your visit or the entire day! 6/19/2006

When I first found this restaurant 5-6 years ago, it was from an invitation from my Caucasian friend. And, I loved the food the prices were right around $18-30. Since then I had a numerous trips to this place with different friends to introduce some decent meal on Newbury st. However, I have to strongly advise that this is definitely for the wasps at its worst that are eager to crush other customer’s mood by being loud and arrogant. But I have to address that the food and the waiting is excluded from my review as they are quite decent. But the management keeps upsetting me and other reviewers as you can see below. Here are my incidents with the Hosts; 1. racially biased and scoffing hosts, 2. strong preference of 20-30 some year old girls, with designer attires over casual dressers 3. Terrace table cover chargee $15 + 4. If you don't look waspy enough, they will not give the seat first or put you on the corner table after a long waiting4. 5. Arrogant Host/ess often scoffing at you if you have any complaint. 6. The restaurant's ownder is well-known for his Notorious TV Commercials for Medical Law Suits that shake the state government system. Jim Sokolove, and his wife's name is Stepahnie. 7. I left a complaint regarding these humiliating experiences over the years. But the owner never returned a call. So, if you are a white female in their 20-30s, with bleached blonde hair and luxurious handbags, with the wispy attire with loud voices, go ahead and enjoy the food. But, please, don't get too loud drinking cocktails before 11am. But if you are black, Latino, or Asian or older or not so wealthy looking, be prepared to be taken like secondary people. Even if we pay the same money and have same good expectation for good food and services, they will make you feel like an outsider, not a customer. Just sit, eat and leave, just like at McDonald's. Or, walk away if any of them show a sign of arrogance as there will be no way to correct this arrogant management. This place is truly the worst spot to witness the bean town’s notorious attitude problem. "Charley's" on Newbury St is better without cover charge $10-15 during the summer, and yes, the food is good if not better. I just feel sorry for the chefs and Waiter/esses at Stephanie's for working with the wrong owner/ host/esses. more

Stephanies, Snotty but Good 4/14/2006

I recently went to Stephanies on Newbury, wonderful food, quite pricey and very snooty! So if you're trying to impress someone, this seems like the place to be on Sunday mornings! The portions are very large, so they aren't skimping, but expect to pay about $15 or so per dish. I noticed a number of people sharing entrees. The most ridiculous thing was that they had muffins (very average ones) for $4.95 - that was ridiculous, but other than that, it was very nice. more

It's good, but what's up with the prices 4/13/2006

I've only been to Stephanie's once, but once was more than enough. They don't have much in the way of vegetarian options, and why do they charge $20 for mac & cheese? That's just ridiculous. I will say that the one time I was there, I was seated by the window and when I looked over, a woman was vomitting into the snow...now, I don't know if she had just eaten at the restaurant, but I thought it was a sign. more

Would be great if the service was better 2/12/2006

Stephanie's menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches (try the honey mustard ham sandwich), and entrees that are very well done (not to mention the iced tea). The atmosphere is classy, but we were waited on by this person who did not pay attention to us until it was time to pay the bill. I am very disappointed with my experience and will never recommend this restaurant to anyone because of the experience. Which is really sad, since the food is fabulous. more

Great food and scene 1/12/2006

Stephanie's on Newbury is one of the best places for brunch or lunch in Boston. The outdoor patio is also the perfect place to people watch when the weather is nice in the spring and summer months. Salads and comfort food top the menu and are excellent choices. Though salads may seem a bit expensive (above $15/plate), the portion sizes are absolutely huge so are a good value. They also feature creative combinations and excellent flavor. You may have to wait up to an hour during rush periods for a patio seat on nice days, but the indoor dining room is also a nice option. Service is impeccable and efficient. more

Fun place! 10/10/2005

The interior decor is pretty traditional and has an older feel and the outdoor patio is a lot of fun too. The food covers a vast array of tastes, so you can be sure to find something you like. One of my favorite things was the brushetta. It was done as a giant mountain of tomatoes on one thick slice of bread. It was an interesting twist typical of what you might expect here. more

Great outdoor dining option 9/9/2005

OK, so they don't take reservations for their outdoor patio, but Stephanie's is definitely one of the top destinations for outdoor dining. Stephanie's boasts one of the largest patio's along Newbury St and is far enough down Newbury that you are just outside of the more frenetic Mass Ave end.. The food is good, although pricey, and their Onion Ring tower is a must try. On summer nights, the place can get really busy, and unfortunately they don't take reservations so you can't quite plan on taking guests there. more

Yummy food! 9/2/2005

Stephanie's on Newbury is my favorite brunch spot, although their food is good for lunch & dinner, too. It's a great restaurant because there is always something on the menu for everyone. People seeking comfort food, health food, or just good food, they'll find it here. I particularly like the toasted goat cheese salad. more

great location but overpriced 8/6/2005

During the summer, Stephanie's always have a long line, but they do not take reservations. The patio seating is especially popular, with a wonderful view overlooking Newbury Street - great for people watching. They have quite an extensive menu, ranging from burgers to steaks to seafood. I had a quiche with smoked salmon, which was pretty tasty, though definately not worth its price. When you go to Stephanie's, you're mostly paying for the view. more
