Usually I?m the person who likes to go out and enjoy a nice dinner at a restaurant with good food along with friendly service. I enjoy a variety of restaurants and enjoy a wide range of authentic foods from all cultures. more

Like eating a cardboard box 12/21/2007

I am a visitor to Phoenix staying with family. This eveing we tried takeout from the Star of India. I can say without a doubt this was the worst Indian food I have ever eaten. Bland is a word that gives this food too much credit. I, as most people are, expect some degree of taste in this type of cuisine, there was absolutely no noticable spicyness or taste. I am quite annoyed as I write this as I very much look foward to Indian food on the occasions that I have it and I feel like I have been extremely let down ( I am even contemplating getting in the car and trying to find some decent indian now) . Apart from the poor food we ordered three dishes which came with barely enough rice for one person (after asking if rice was included). There is nothing personal to this review, I am so scathing as the food really was that bad and also for the reasons described above. Pros: Food arrived in the expected timeframe Cons: Worst indian food I have eaten and I have eaten a lot of it more

Cream laden food 7/10/2007

If you have read my reviews then you will know I'm a harsh critic. I feel like a lot of these reviews are written by people who don't eat Indian food often and are not qualified to judge what is good and not good. Please understand that like Chinese food, Indian food is fairly tasty and addictive due the spices and cooking techniques so even the worst Indian restaurant wil taste really good to non-Indians and people who aren't used to eating Indian food regularly. Star of India is good but is hardly the best or even one of the best Indian restaurants in the valley. Their food is not prepared by a professional Indian chef and that can be tasted. The food tastes like it's been prepared at home by a very talented Auntie. Now while an Auntie's cooking is fine, it's still no match to that of food prepared by a professional chef. I would strongly encourage the readers below to venture to Tempe and Phoenix to taste Delhi Palace, India Palace and Jewel of the Crown. Pros: Some Punjabi dishes, takeout Cons: Expensive, Heavy cream in all dishes, restaurant can feel crammed more

Best among the Rest in town 5/27/2007

Best Indian in the Valley 5/3/2006

Being from Boston where there are tons of good indian restaurants, this place is the gem of indian food for the valley. The owner Preet is almost always there and welcomes you to his pride and joy. The food is very good and has some unique dishes that we've never seen before; keema naan and chicken naan, both of which are delicious with tamarind chutney. The kabaab was a little dry, but still had a good flavor and was served with a pile of onions, green peppers, and lemons. Aloo Mutter is different than the east coast style of using a tomato sauce base, as there's is yogurt based. Still very good, just different. Anyway, go and check out Star of India and support your local small business and you'll soon feel as if you've become part of an extended family. Pros: friendliness, price, freshly prepared! more

Pretty good, excellent for AZ 3/27/2006

Start of India was recommended to me by a friend from Rajasthan. I've been to a few Indian restaurants here, and although they just do not compare to the places in California, this one was pretty good. The chicken makhani was very good as was the Naan. If you're looking for excellent authentic Inidan cusine, Arizona in general will be a huge disappointment to you. However, if you are looking for something that's passable, this is your best bet. The staff was friendly and attentive. The music was good. the atmosphere was a quiet and subtle. Just a nice place overall. Pros: easy parking, friendly staff, pretty good food Cons: not comparable to CA, small more

Worst Indian food so far in the USA 12/25/2005

I have had indian food in different part of the US (LA, Chicago, St Louis, Phoenix, Memphis, etc) and beyond doubt, this was my worst experience of Indian food. I was dissappointed with the food and the service. I went there with a group of friends to try a 'new' Indian restaurant but had such a bad experience. Anyone who is appreciating this place probably doesn't know what good indian food is. NOT RECOMMENDED! more

Best Indian in the Valley so far! 10/27/2005

Ordered food to go for a company potluck. Food was really good, especially their Tandoori Chicken. People, who never experienced Indian food, liked it. Restaurant owner, Preet, is a very nice pleasant man who gave us a good discount because it was a company function. Pros: Very nice owner, Parking, Good menu and $$$ Cons: A bit far to get to more

Best in the field 7/14/2005

This is the best Indian cuisine I have ever had. The service, food, and friendly atmosphere are without peer. The small extra effort needed to find this jewel is well worth it. Cooked and spiced to perfection, the wide selection of dishes earns this restaurant 5 for 5 in my books. Pros: Great food, Personal service Cons: hard to find more

Highly Recommended 8/14/2004

Excellent food and wonderful service. This restaurant is going to become a regular stopping place for me. My only complaint - the lamb curry was not up to my expectations. What it lacked was more then made up for with all of the other delicious dishes! Pros: Unique Flavor, Great Service, Spicy more
