terrible 11/30/2009

Saturday after Thanksgiving had breakfast at Stan's. Looking forward to a New Orleans breakfast. Placed order and never saw the waitress again. Waited way too long for breakfast to be served but finally received order. The three of us ordered the same breakfast and all three were served cold. Sent the orders back and had to wait again. The service was poor and the food was not that good. Would not recommend Stan's Pros: exit sign Cons: food and service more

Awesome, Awesome Southern Food 8/6/2009

Stan's Place has been around for a while and I understand they've got a new Chef. As a result I thing they've made what was good, great! There are many good things on the menu it's hard to choose. Brunch Favorite: Eggs Louis Armstrong. Lunch: Veggie Burger Dinner: Mussels or the Shrimp and Grits or the Blackened Catfish w/ spinach and bbq sweet potatoes. It's hard to choose! It's one of my favorite restaurants. Everything is fresh and delicious! Give it a try. Pros: Grits Cons: If the Brunch is too crowded come back for dinner it's great more

TERRIBLE 3/27/2009

Stan's doesn't just butcher New Orleans cuisine, the food in general is just bad. My fiance and I are both from New Orleans and were so excited to try out this place. Needless to say, we were very dissapointed. Pros: good decor Cons: food more

i've died and gone to southern heaven 9/25/2008

My fiance and I have brunched here a few times and always leave feeling fat and happy. The first time we ventured into Stan's we lucked out on the smaller table by the french windows. the interior is bright and airy, with a New Orleans French quarter style balcony overlooking the main dining area. \r \r we normally order beignets, coffee and fresh orange juice to start and then mull over the menu while we wait for them to arrive. First time I had the fried oyster poboy - it's a weakness of mine and stan's did not disappoint. My favorite dish to date has to be the eggs sardou however, poached eggs with artichoke and a tasty hollandaise. \r \r the last time we were there I had the catfish fingers with creamy grits. The grits were great, the catfish not bad but a little dry, and that spicy seasoning wreaked some fiery havoc on my irish plumbing. One the other hand, my fiance's bananas foster pancakes were quite yummy.\r \r Hostess and waitstaff were courteous and easy on the eyes. What more could you want?\r more

Interesting Menu with New Tasks on Classics 8/6/2008

Just had dinner here on a Wednesday night (10% entrees night! good deal!). The food was excellent, though a little off. I did not enjoy their take on the onion rings, too much crunchy stuff with oddly no crunch, nor the mango ketchup, I prefer regular old Heinz. But, my salmon burger was extremely tasty and the bites I had of my friend's food was very very good. Only problem I had was the service. They were pretty busy tonight and appeared to only have two servers so I can't be too harsh. Also, the live music, though lively and entertaining, was so loud I had to shout across the table to have a dinner conversation. Luckily we were almost through when the band started so we only had to shout through two songs. The ambience of the restaurant is lovely and according my friend, really captures the vibe of New Orleans. NOTE: Cash only, and their ATM charges $1.75 fee so don't bring an empty wallet. :) Overall a lovely place I'll definitely try again! Pros: New Food, Ambience, Location Cons: Cash only, Service when busy more

SAVE YOURSELF - STAY AWAY!!! 7/5/2008

I can officially say that I had the worst dining experience of my life here. Did it say on their web site that the chef had creole culinary training? Let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say that when my boyfriend & I went there their ""highly trained"" chef was on vacation and the lowly assistant who never paid attention when being taught was manning the stove... Anyway, I ordered the blackened catfish & I swear they try to torture the diners with black pepper. I can promise you that all this fish was seasoned with was black pepper & TONS of it - nothing else!!!! \r \r What annoys me is that my boyfriend and I just came back from New Orleans & we stumbled upon this disaster of a restaurant by mistake. In New Orleans we dined @ KPauls who has the best blackened anything you can imagine. We didn't expect the same quality but at least edible. Normally I don't complain when a meal isn't great but I couldn't continue to commit suicide with every bite. We told the server that it was bad & all she did was smile & shrug. Yeah dumb smile and shrug... While it would have been nice of her to offer a substitute, she offered nothing!!! \r \r At any rate, we put that bad experience to bed and have vowed NEVER to go back. If they ever tried to open this horror in New Orleans, they'd be run out of town on the first street car. Pros: Pretty Decor Cons: Horrible Food more

cafe du monde beignets? ?? not quite 5/4/2008

i found stans place googling new orleans style beignets in new york. i was thrilled to read they use cafe du monde mix and coffee.\r i rode my bike from boro park to try them out. first of all, my cafe au lait had a thick topping of foam; something never seen at cafe du monde and the beignets were thin and undercooked and tasted nothing like the original.\r \r with tip i spent $10. i left disappointed. the place looks and feels nice and the staff was friendly.\r \r as for authentic new orleans style beignets and cafe au lait, the search continues.\r \r \r \r more

Can't wait to go back 4/23/2008

My first experience at Stan's Place was last month. I loved it immediately. It's very small and quaint but that's just fine by me. If it was too get any bigger I believe it would lose its personality. We went for Brunch and the food was out of this world. I had the catfish (which tasted so fresh) and grits (which were so creamy) and a side order of biscuits with sausage gravy. I have never tasted anything so good in my life. Sausage gravy over biscuits? What a delicious idea. I ate like a pig. The wait wasn't long and for the most part the staff was friendly. My only complaint was our waitress. i think her name was Lily or Lila. She wasn't rude, she just wasn't someone who I think should be working as a waitress. You need personality for that. I felt as if she didn't want to be there. I thought maybe it was just a bad day for her, but I went back this past Sunday because I just had to take my husband and she was our waitress again and I got the same vibe. I just ignored it because everything else made up for it. I would still go back Pros: The great food, the prices, the atmosphere Cons: Our waitress more

was there today 12/30/2007

For brunch. Can't wait to try dinner soon. Loved the atmosphere - calm - and the staff didn't act like they wanted to be somewhere else. No complaints whatsoever on the food except that I ate too much. OJ tasted freshly squeezed which I love! more

Great Cajun place in Brooklyn. 11/18/2007

As a recent transplant from the South to New York City I have been on the lookout for restaurants that remind me a bit of home. Stan's is definitely one of those places. I have been there several times over the past few months and have enjoyed every visit.\r \r The service is friendly, neat, courteous, in a word excellent. The food is as close to real New Orleans as you're likely to find in NYC. The gumbo is great, but I would recommend the Steak and Eggs from the brunch menu or the Red Beans and Rice off the dinner menu. \r \r The only complaint I would have is, that like every Cajun restaurant in NYC, a lack of Boudin. But, all in all Stan's is definitely worth the visit. Pros: Service, food, experience Cons: $12 for a Po' Boy? more

Stan's Place is definitely ""the Place""! Best food in Brooklyn! 11/5/2007

As a recent graduate of a hospitality bachelor's degree program, I was really surprised to read the other reviews about Stan's Place here on CitySearch. Being in the restaurant industry myself, I am very picky when out to eat. I am very aware of service and the quality of food. I think I am much harder to please than the average restaurant-goer, so reading anything negative about Stan's Place is almost unbelievable.\r My wife and I have gone to this restaurant at least six times in the past five or six months and every single experience has been wonderful. The atmosphere is relaxed, but you still feel like you are at a trendy eatery in SoHo without the long waits or pretense. The candle light in the evening makes ""the Place"" perfect for a romantic evening out. The waitstaff is friendly but knows how to give you your space when eating. Stan himself was extremely friendly to us and came over to check on our meals and have a quick chat. We have tried various items on the menu and each time we have been stuffed silly by the end of our meal. And we STILL want to have dessert! (Try the bread pudding!) We also recommend Mildred's Fried Chicken (my personal favorite... succulent chicken, perfectly breaded, delicious mash potatoes) or the Red Beans and Rice (my wife's favorite... the spicy andouille that comes with it just puts it over the top). ------------------\r \r Please, don't let a few grumpy, jaded New Yorkers taint your view of a wonderful restaurant hidden in Brooklyn!------------------\r \r -Written by two un-grumpy, but still jaded New Yorkers =) Pros: Ambiance, Service, Owner Cons: Nothing. more

Stan's Place my home away from home with the BEST burgers ever!! 10/26/2007

I usually don't write these kinda things BUt I felt I need to respond to the last few reveiwers.\r \r I have been coming to Stan's since they opened and I have had nothing but good experinces. I wonder if the last reviewers were at another Stan's Place because the one I know has only gotten better and better!!! The food is great and now they have some serious kick'n MUSIC. Tons O' fun.\r \r I also want to mention that now the weather is getting chillier . There ain't nothing like a cup O'Gumbo and the BEST hamburger ever. I can't even begin to explain how yummy the burger is It's big, juicy and filled with surprising cajun spices MMMM GOOD.. Pros: Burgers and Brass Bands to great things that go together more

Very Rude 10/13/2007

The attitue at this little restaurant isn't something that we need in Brooklyn. The food is ok but the portions are tiny. They clearly think that they are better than the people they serve. I wouldn't suggest this place to anyone. Cons: everthing about the place more

Tips for a GREAT meal at Stan's! 9/29/2007

First, I love the ambiance here. It is perfect for romance or laid-back hanging out with friends. As for the food, certain things are not so good, but some are FABULOUS! The fried chicken is perfectly friend and is a good sized portion. If you are there during softshell crab season their fried softshell special is AMAZING (and this is coming from someone from a Southern crabbing family) and HUGE. The shrimp and grits is excellent for the gravy and grits - the shrimp could be bigger and there could be more shrimp, but the gravy+grits make up for it! \r \r All this being said...do NOT get the chicken etouffee. It is mostly rice and they don't give you much etouffee at ALL. The service is so-so (our cornbread was brought when we were almost done; no one ever came to take a drink order), but if you order the good food I wrote about it will be worth it!!!! Pros: shrimp and grits, friend chicken, softshells Cons: chicken etouffee, slow service more

Bring a date, bring a friend or come alone 9/10/2007

Well I had heard the hype for too long and I finally had to check the place out for myself. It was amazing! I went in on a sunday evening with my girlfriend a couple of weeks back. I have never been to New Orleans, but just walking in the place I felt like i was there. I was sat by the gentleman who was acting as the host, bartender and server. Since I didnt know anything on the menu my girlfriend and i asked for the servers help. He broke down the entire menu to me, telling me his preferences, what was spicy and what was popular. I ended up having the seafood gumbo, and my girlfriend had the catfish and two mojitos. everything was fantastic. I have been by twice since. The staff and manager have been wonderful and the food is brilliant. If you want to have a good time and get great food, go here! Pros: food, service, beverages, envirtoment. Cons: not enough stomach space more

Great Family/Friends Restaurant 7/23/2007

We had our daughter's 21st birthday celebration at Stan's Place and had a wonderful time. We had visited New Orleans about 8 years ago with our daughter and she fell in love with the cajun and creole food that we ate while there. She wanted to relive those days on her 21st and we decided on Stan's Place and we were happy that we made that choice. The food and service were excellent. We were a party of 6 adults and 2 small children. We had reservations at 7:00pm and were seated and served within 15 minutes. I would recommend Stan's Place to anyone who wishes to have a relaxing and delicious meal out in downtown Brooklyn with family or friends. more

Great Cajun in great location 7/11/2007

I have gone more times than I can count. The manager is nice and she has always taken care of me when something wasn't quite what I expected. The food has always been good, and you get a fair amount for the price. After all of the experiences we've had with Cajun food in New York we went to Stan's Place with low expectations. We were amazed at the high quality of food there. If you go there expecting to have authentic Cajun food you will probably be disappointed, but I wouldn?t suggest eating traditional Cajun food outside of Louisiana anyway because it will most likely be nowhere near as good as you would get in new Orleans...but this is as good as it gets in NY. The food that we had was spectacular and the Catfish was excellent, as good as me or my boyfriend had ever had. I highly recommend this restaurant! Pros: Intimate space, great location and music Cons: Cash and AMEX only more

Bad Food & Bad Attitude 6/17/2007

We took my husband here for Father's day. Where do I begin with what is bad about this place?\r First off, their website leads you to believe it is a spacious place, it is not! They have ceiling fans instead of a/c which though may add ambiance, on a hot summer day it also adds discomfort. The waiter or owner or who ever he was (the guy with the played out Antonio Bandares a la ""Desperado"" ponytail), was rude from the instant we arrived. I asked if they accept credit cards and he said no, so I tell my husband we need to find an atm. This short conversation occurred in the waiter's presence. I go out find an atm and we return. After we are seated I notice there is a working atm in the place! He obviously thought it was too much trouble to mention that earlier to us. So on to the food, we ordered the blackened catfish and fried chicken and an appetizer. The catfish was bone dry, as if it had been cooked over and over again, its saving grace was how spicy it was. The chicken was okay but the garlic mashed potatoes were more like Idaho from the box. We had our kids with us and my little one dropped her fork, so he bought us a clean one and then rolled his eyes!!! Can you even believe that! So when the check came, we tipped the right amount despite the awful service and food, and just figured this place would not last in Brooklyn with such a bad attitude. To add insult to injury as we were leaving and my daughter was taking her time getting up from her chair, he rolled his eyes again!!! The only positive about the whole experience was the African-American lady who bought us our menus and seemed to work mostly in the back, I don't know if she was the manager, but she was very polite and helpful. If she is the manager, she needs to get some new help ASAP to save this place.\r My opinion save your money for a place that actually appreciates and welcomes your business.\r Pros: The lady who worked there that day Cons: Almost everything more

Brunch at Stan's Place 3/8/2007

I just moved into Brooklyn a few months ago from Manhattan. I was told to check out Stan's Place for brunch. Apparently they have one of the best brunches in the neighborhood. And now I can see why. My boyfriend and I had the Bubba's Big Breakfast, which comes with eggs, creamy grits, biscuits and bacon, and a shrimp po boy served with seasoned crispy home fries. I can truly say our appetites were fulfilled. The atmosphere was very welcoming with a balcony/mezzanine that overlooks the dining room. They also had a great selection of music playing. Even though Stan?s Place had a full house the charming waitresses were so friendly and the service was fairly prompt. I also had a great cup of Creole coffee made from the cafe du monde blend. Make sure you save room for the beignets. They do it fresh for each order!! Pros: great food, great music and great coffee more
