Exceptional Care and Kindness 1/13/2012

I am continually grateful for the staff at Southland Veterinary Hospital. The times I have endured the gradual demise of a pet, the staff has revealed a considerable heart for my dear dog while considering my financial limitations. By the same token, Dr. Hardigree didn't hesitate to recommend a possible resource in Dr. Applewhite of Metropolitan Specialists as a consult for my ""once in a lifetime dog"" who left this world shortly before her thirteenth birthday. Dr. Applewhite was able to perform a procedure that allowed my girl to enjoy an additional two years of life. (Prior to this, she was unable to even stand or walk.) More importantly, I am continually amazed at the fact that the veterinarians at Southland are committed to sound, research based practices while promoting the ""least invasive approach"" at all times. Our family feels quite fortunate to have such expertise just a phone call away or a 5 minute drive from home. PS This clinic demands continuous training of staff. Simply amazing. more

Best Vets Ever!! 8/18/2011

My husband and I have lived in Lexington going on 9 years now. Bringing our 4 cats from California was one of the most important parts to the move and finding a great vet clinic was at the top of our list when we settled in. It took a bit of research and speaking to other people before we chose Southland and never once have I ever been disappointed with the care we have received. I have never felt rushed or intimidated when we have gone in for visits....(and I tend to ask TONS of questions). We have also taken many animals who needed some extra help and have never been turned away or told they were too busy and didn't have the time. These are doctors ad staff who, above all, care about the animals they treat and in some of the toughest moments I have had to endure, they were there for me....even going the extra mile to come in on a Sunday to help one of our friends pass over without having to suffer another day....did I mention they are closed on Sundays? This was of the highest of honors in my book and what makes a vet truly awesome. more

Highly Recommend Southland Veterinary Hospital! 8/10/2011

Southland Veterinary Hospital provides outstanding care and I highly recommend this clinic/hospital. Their doctors are extremely knowledgeable and their equipment is cutting edge. They do a great job whether it is for annual health maintenance, or for an injury or other health issue. They keep up with the latest research and treatment options and have an excellent network of specialists for consultation or referral, if needed. The doctors and staff are so compassionate, both towards the pets and owners. I really appreciate that they open early (7:30 AM) and stay late (7:00 PM); and are open on Saturday s. It is so convenient and I never have to take off work for appointments or to pick up prescriptions. Every time I go there they make me and my Yorkie feel like family! more

provides caring, professional, personalized care 8/4/2011

as one who considers pets to be members of the family and celebrates their birthdays, talks to them all the time because they're such good listeners, and can't resist those big pleading eyes when i'm on the couch and they're not, i have had peace of mind knowing that i could depend on the staff at southland to take care of my pets as if they were there very own. in the 20+ years i have known them, i have never been told they couldn't see my pet on the day i called with a concern. i have had prescriptions, special food, and messages ready to go and left for me at the office when i said i would be there to pick them up. they have set up referrals and/or consultations with specialists when necessary and have been able to assist with getting quick appointments with them. i have been the recipient of their kindness, empathy, and support when \r tough decisions had to be made. i trust and respect their experience and judgement when it isn't always clear to me what is the best thing to do for my pet. they have a well-run, well equipped office with a client oriented staff. of utmost importance, though, they are excellent clinicians and technicians, and their love for animals (and their owners) is evident with every encounter i have ever had with them. more

Saved my dog twice 8/4/2011

I have been going to southland vet for the past 10 years. The veterinarians and staff are the kindest most dedicated people you could imagine! Even opening the clinic early and helping me transfer my large son from the AA clinic after he was hit by a car. He was in shock from massive blood loss, but they auto transfused him with the blood in this abdomen and cow cells, got him stabilized, and with their intensive care and prayers he is now as good as new. He was revived by Dr.Williams and Hardigree again a few years later when he had hemorrhagic enteritis. My other cats and dogs have also been treated with extreme kindness and the most thorough care. Their equipmment is more advanced than most MDs with digital x-rays as well as ultrasound. Their Saturday and evening hours, as well as drop off services make it possible to get care for your pet without missing work. I cannot imagine a kinder more dedicated veterinary clinic, from the veterinarians to the techs and receptionist. Susan Neil more

killed my cat 8/3/2011

Went in for teeth cleaning. Cat was very healthy, never been sick. Came out with chronic diarrhea that new vet says is due to failure of organs. I will have to have him put down soon. I am in agony over the decision. The vet at Southland is a complete idiot and should not be trusted with your pet's life. more

Thankyou Caitlin for helping Pookie and I to say our farewells. The compassion of your team and gentle care during this difficult time was greatly appreciated. more

Clarification for " Good Emergency, but Expensive" 6/11/2010

I am one of the doctors at Southland Veterinary Hospital and am writing in regards to the comment about the "Good Emergency, but Expensive" comment by Evan B. \r \r There has been confusion by Evan B. with the identity of 2 different veterinary practices: Southland Veterinary Hospital and the AA Small Animal Emergency Service. The two veterinary practices are separate entities. AA Small Animal Emergency Service was formerly located on Southland Drive and is where Evan B took his pet for the after hours emergency. \r \r Lisa R Williams, D.V.M. more

Excellent, compassionate care 6/10/2009

New to Lexington, I was forced to take my very old, very ill kitty to an unknown veterinary clinic.\r \r I saw Dr. Millie Hardigree at Southland and am so incredibly grateful that I made my way there. She was tender and gentle with my old friend, respectful and kind to me as I realized that my unconditionally loving companion of nearly 19 years was soon to leave this earth.\r \r I found the general atmosphere to be down-to-earth, comfortable, and reassuring. Over the past weeks I've talked with colleagues about Southland and across the board they all talk about the excellent care their pets and the pets of friends have received. The vets and techs are skillful, the prices are fair, and they really care about their patients.\r \r If you love your pet, take them to the decent folks at Southland. I am so very thankful that I did. more

INCREDIBLE VET FACILITY AND STAFF 6/5/2009

I have been taking my pets to Southland Vet ever since I acquired my first pet over five years ago. I have a cat and 2 chihuahuas and I must say that I love Southland Vet and their staff. :) I have yet to experience a visit where I wasn't satisfied. My purpose for posting on here was basically to correct the comment made on "angela.w" post....you do not get charged for the bag of puppy food or their first dose of revolution. I have never been charged for my first time visit (with my cat) or the puppy visits. I was actually very grateful for the freebies because you definately can use that during the first few months. Having pets is the same as having children....they are costly but well worth the fees/prices you will pay. Trust me....there are NO hidden costs when you go to Southland Vet ~ everything is broke down on the receipt when you are presented the bill at the end of your visit. more

Very professional, knowledgeable, and compassionate!!! 4/14/2009

I have had dogs that have tricky health situations, not just the normal everyday health issues. (lucky us!) But in each situation Dr. Hardigree spends the time and uses all kinds of resources to keep Bailey, Ally, and now Bella and Maxie healthy and happy. She is very realistic as well, and gives great advice about when it's "time".\r \r I have tried other places because of previous locations, but this is the place to go no matter where you live!!!! more

Great people, wonderful care for your pets! 2/9/2009

I have recommended Southland Veterinary Hospital to many of my friends and co-workers. The vets and other staff members are kind, thorough, and caring--I know that they care about my three Cocker Spaniels as much as I do. My dogs are not the easiest to deal with, but I have never been made to feel like they were an inconvenience or a problem. When Patches was terribly sick with a stomach infection, Dr. Hardigree called to check on him every couple of days for over a week. Their level of concern for the animals in their care is truly impressive. more

Southland Vet 9/15/2008

I highly recommend Southland. They've always been friendly and knowledgable and have guided me through the back to back loss of two pets as well as the (many months later) adoption of two new kittens. Dr. Hardigree was great in detailing treatment options for both my sick cats and...in outlining to a very upset owner what the "next thing" was to consider. She constantly went above and beyond...researching one of my cats conditions that was unfamiliar to her, recommending one of her staff to petsit when I was afraid my regular sitter could not handle the medication issues, and working my feverish kitten in spite of a full schedule. more

I will recommend Southland Vets to my daughter 8/3/2008

I have never visited Southland Vets nor do I live in Lexington, KY; however, after researching LexKY Vets online, I will recommend Southland Vets to my daughter, who has just moved there, as a first choice. Southland Vets will also be my first choice when I visit Lexington with my senior toy poodle, who just had her gall bladder removed and has recovered from hepatitis, peritonitis, and e-coli related to her illness. She recovered from her near-death experience thanks to Dr. Trevor and his ace team at Veterinary Referral and Critical Care in Manakin-Sabot, VA. more

Southland Vet Staff are FABULOUS! 4/30/2008

My boston terrier, Chase, was mauled with over a hundred bite marks over his entire body, He had a broken leg. My husband came home and found him in a pool of blood and barely breathing. He called me crying and I told him to take Chase to Southland Vet. I hurried to meet him there and we weren't sure that Chase was going to make it. The vet was honest with me and the staff were amazing. I have been in people hospitals that did not have the caring attitude that this group of people had. They gradually brought his body temperature up, cleaned him and bandaged as much as they could. He had extensive bruising over his entire body. My heart was breaking because my baby might not pull through. The staff gave me encouragement and kleenex. Chase had surgery for his broken leg and seems to be on the mend, but not for the fabulous staff, he would just be a memory.\r \r When you want a quality facility with experienced and caring staff, don't look for anywhere else but Southland Vet. more

Excellent veterinarians, reasonable rates! 1/10/2008

I have been a client of Southland for 5 years, and I just love them! Dr. Hardigree is so knowledgeable, and so good with my animals. I have a rowdy dog, a shy dog, a great cat and a temperamental cat. The staff and vets are always patient, attentive, and friendly. Dr. H always has time to talk about my concerns, and I also have liked the other vets I have seen there.\r \r Highly recommended! more

Good emergency, but expensive 11/30/2007

I was thankful that they have an emergency service, but it cost me an arm and a leg. They did successfully treat my dog and kept her overnight. The staff was friendly. The clinic is a little hard to find in the dark. more

Clarification for "not a great experience..." 10/26/2007

I am actually one of the veterinarians at Southland Vet Hospital. Just this week, it came to our attention that Angela W. did not have a good experience when she came to our clinic for her new puppy visit. Of course we were troubled, as we strive to make every visit as pleasant as possible, so I did a little research. The Revolution and Pro Plan were actually given to Angela free of charge, which is customary for all new puppy owners at our clinic. On the invoice, we listed the amount the products WOULD have sold for, but we also listed the amount paid for them as zero. So in fact, there were no hidden charges, only a misunderstanding in reading the invoice. We typically don't send out reminders for puppy boosters, because they are due so frequently, but we are happy to make exceptions to call or mail reminders if a client asks. We do, however, send out reminders for yearly wellness checks, vaccines, bloodwork, spays, neuters, etc. While no clinic is perfect, we certainly try, more

GREAT People: Best Vets We've Ever Had 10/11/2007

I've taken our four-legged family members to Dr. Hardigree and her staff for several years for both life/death emergencies and regular check-ups. They've always been extremely good at calming down the anxiety-ridden worrier that I become when it comes to our pets and have never been judgemental or rude in any way when I've gotten behind on shots in spite of their consistent and timely postcard reminders; or when we have called at the 'last minute' and come in without an appointment. In addition their fees are very reasonable and they sell flea and heartworm products such as Frontline and Revolution at the same price I was buying them for from petmeds.com. Actually, they're cheaper because they give you an extra dose with each 6-pack purchased. Incidentally, a great resource to check out the numerous services they offer is their extensive and well-designed website (the url is listed on this page). Our first meeting was unforgettable. Although I had never been there, it was the closest v more

Wonderful Vet 11/26/2005

Southland vet takes very good care of our cats, in good health and bad. They are good at handling emergencies, and respectful & kind at the loss of a pet. We have a 16 year old cat that wouldn't be with us without the care of the good people at Southland Vet. Their charges are very reasonable, and they are great about sending out reminders when a pet is due for tests. PROS: Caring professionals, convenient location CONS: None more
