Piano and Guitar Lessons 11/23/2010

Love Sound Roots!\r \r I have 2 kids taking classes. The 4 year old is taking private piano lessons and the 12 year old is taking private guitar lessons.\r \r \r It was so much fun to see after every lesson all that they had learned. They look forward to their weekly lessons and hate to leave when lessons are over. \r \r The 12 year old was struggling to learn how to tune his guitar. After the very first class he caught on to how to tune it....\r \r Both kids come home with a new song each week they had learned....amazing!!!! more

Accordians are Groovy! 10/22/2010

I've had an accordian for awhile but didn't know how to play it. I heard about Sound Roots and signed up to start with four lessons. My teacher, Sarah, put me right at ease with my accordian and I've left each class feeling like I've made some pretty good progress. The studio itself has a completely comfortable environment, where people are there either to learn or share their musical expertise. This is the perfect learning environment for me, who hasn't played any musical instruments for over 30 years. I'm really jazzed about what sounds I might be able to coax out of my accordian now! more

Rookie Rock Rules! 10/12/2009

Teacher Tyleena was wonderful with all the kids. Lots of fun songs including James Brown and Stevie Wonder, as well as a funky ""Itsy Bitsy Spider"". There were story time songs and the kids used the drums and rattles and we danced and sang and waved around ribbon and scarves. I think my kids liked ""All Aboard the Choo-Choo Train"" the best. I really miss their Rookie Rock class! Pros: fun for kids and parents Cons: They aren't in Forest Grove yet. more

Best Music School in Town! 7/27/2009

We went to watch one of the Camp Rocks! band camps perform at Mississippi Pizza a couple of weeks ago and we were floored by how confident the kids were in their new found skills! They put on a fabulous performance and were so enthusiastic about performing! They're musical skills were appropriate for their ages, but ultimately, it was their confidence in front of a crowd that shone! I can't wait to send my kids to SR's camps and lessons as they get older- It's so worth the cash! You can watch the band performances on YouTube by doing a search for Sound Roots. So great! Fara and Chris are such a great couple and they're doing a fantastic job of running this little school. You can tell that they're passionate about music and people. NE Portland is very lucky to have them a part of the community! Pros: bike parking, street parking, public transportation, more

We have a BLAST every weekend!!! 12/17/2008

What a great place. My 2 (almost 3) year old is in the Rookie Rock class on Saturdays and loves it. He cant wait to play instruments and stomp around with the other kids. It is the highlight of our weekend!!! Pros: Warm, Friendly enviornment. Lots of room to jam on drums and play all the other instruments more

Great Music School in NE Portland! 12/13/2008

We were thrilled when we heard that there was going to be a music school near our house in NE Portland, but we had no idea how much we would enjoy the Rookie Rock classes. My two year old adores her teacher (yea for Tyleena!) and sings the songs at home that she learns at class. I especially like the choice of songs because while they mix in the ol' stand-bys (ABC's & Twinkle, Twinkle), they also incorporate songs we adults enjoy by the Beatles and Bob Marley and others. The best part for me as a mom of 2 is that the school is so inviting...more like a house than a school so I am comfortable taking my infant along to class with us. The owners are very available and accommodating and even offered class times that fit my schedule better once I suggested it. My husband even started taking private guitar lessons and he can't get enough! Pros: great song choices, inviting atmosphere, easy parking more

Best music school in Portland 12/12/2008

I have been attending the Rookie Rock class with my 1 1/2 yr. old and it is coming to an end (10 wks.) and I will miss it terribly! The age diversity is great for the younger one and older kids. They all learn from one another! The teacher is super enthusiastic, but also knows how to deal with shy kiddos. The songs are memorable and even my 1 1/2 yr. old recalls words from it during the week. (She started saying ""cock-a-doodle-doodle-do""!) We've used many different instruments while singing quiet songs as well as gotten up to ""get our sillies out."" We will be back for sure! Thank goodness Portland now has a better choice for music class! Pros: Great, relaxed and fun atmosphere that will feel welcoming to everyone! more
