Love the fish n chips 1/31/2012

I have lived a block away for 4 years and been here a million times. It used to be my favorite back when roger and a couple other great bartenders. I don't really know anyone who works there now. Seems to always be someone different. The food is great and the prices are fair. The only thing that bothers me is slow service sometimes. If the bartender is texting or writing on the chalkboard or in a conversation, it seems they pretend not to see you waiting. I still go back for the convenience but not if I am feeling impatient more

What's going on with this place 8/3/2009

I remember when Soda was a place I could walk in and see a friendly neighborhood face behind the bar. There would be an interesting soundtrack and if you'd like the bartender could offer some intelligent banter. Those times seem few and far between these days. Over the last year the familiar faces have dwindled and it seems each time I go in for a drink there is a new one behind the bar. The personality of Soda Bar is slipping away to mindless robots that can almost make a basic cocktail. Very little thought is given to the music that is being played. Almost as if the house ipod is on continuous shuffle. Don't get me wrong there are a few personable bartenders left and if you are lucky enough to encounter one you'll be pleasantly surprised. Nothing beats a well mixed cocktail, good tunes and a bartender that knows how to hold, entertain a crowd and set a mellow vibe. It leads me to believe it's all a matter of shotty management. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out if you are the only late night bar left in your neighborhood it would be smart and profitable to keep your kitchen open till at least 2, the bar open till 4. Reliability goes a long way. A moron could run this place and still make money and apparently is... Don't get me wrong though. The food is great, they show some pretty interesting films and the patio is revamped. Just watch out for the vermin. Saw them scare a few patrons this past weekend. Pros: Great neighborhood spot Cons: Bad management and rodents more

Cool dive bar, reasonable prices... 5/9/2009

There was plenty of space to meet-up which was key, as we had a large group all showing up at different times. The back area had scaffolding above, so it felt like hanging out a construction site, though it was a no frills crowd, so that was fine. Hopefully, they'll remove that soon.\r \r As for food, the sausage sandwich was great, fries were soggy but still tasty, though the fried fish is best left in the freezer from whence it came. \r \r Service is unfriendly and slow overall, but I'd head back for the space and versatility alone. Pros: Outdoor space, cheap food and drinks Cons: service was garbage more

Pupu Platter. 5/8/2008

Oh hell no. I've been to Soda many times, and I like it fine, but nothing prepared me for my experience last night. So I got stuck with this awful queen waiter - I'll call him Cuntyqueentay. He had shoulder-length bobbed curly hair and wore palazzo pants with a blousy tunic top: very 'Fame gone to pasture.,' you expected him to pirouette away from you after taking your order. \r \r ANYway, I know I'm being ridiculous with these descriptions, but seriously, Cunty had the stankest attitude. And I mean, I waited tables for three years and can appreciate a bitchy queen. This was not that. Homegirl bitched me out for ordering a drink at the bar (instead of through him), which I only did because I couldn't find him for 20 minutes. Wouldn't make eye contact after that, slamming things down on the table and walking away, shaking his head, after I apologized for not ordering through him. Same with the check, exasperated sighs and eye rolls. I felt like he demanded a diva showdown! You know what? Hated itttt. I left my maraschino cherry in that untouched container of mayo and I've never felt better. Cuntyqueentay, you know who you are. more

Loved everything about it 2/6/2008

It was a great place all around. The waitress was friendly and checked up on me enough but not too much to the point that she got annoying... The french fries and buffalo wings are DELICIOUS. I've been thinking about them ever since. The atmosphere is very comfortable. Its good for a night out with your friends or a friendly romantic date. Candles on the tables, the dim lighting, and comfortable seating (couches and comfy chairs) make for a great experience. For sports lovers, theres a big screen tv in a separate room also equipped with comfy seating to view all the major sports events... I LOVED IT more

One word...FABULOUS 2/2/2008

I would've never imagined that this place was soooo Awesome. Went there tonight and I was so pleased Im writing this at 5am. The Wings are good, people are good, music is good, Definitely a great place. more

Great burgers, great atmosphere - rest of the menu not as good, only so-so service 12/26/2007

Really love the digs. The second room (to the left of the bar) is a great place to sit and eat, never too loud or too crowded but fun and active nonetheless. Couches and tables are comfortable, and even better, during good weather the outdoor seating is really fantastic, a great place to just sit and eat. The service is friendly but very often quite slow, this is forgivable since it's such a nice place to just hang - I'd recommend going when you're up for a relaxing meal, but not when you're hungry for a quick fix, cause it might take awhile. The biggest caveat though is to definitely order the Soda Burger - it's one of the best in Brooklyn - but the rest of the menu doesn't live up. It doesn't really need to though, the burger is what you go there for and it won't disappoint. more

worst in brooklyn 5/1/2007

If you want to give up on life, you should give your money to Soda Bar. This is one of the most poorly run establishments in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. If you want to see ""money-grubbing"" between business owners at its best....take the time and visit. Don't for get the extra cash for an eightball- there are a few people there who can help you out. more

BEST KEPT SECRET 12/29/2006

\r I JUST MOVED TO PROSPECT HEIGHTS WITH TWO OF MY BEST FRIENDS. ONE A GAY MAN AND \r THE OTHER A BUDDING LESBIAN AND THEN THERE IS ME, I STILL DON'T KNOW... FOUR WEKS AGO I WENT TO SODA AND HAD A GREAT TIME, I FELT LIKE THEY ACCEPTED EVERYONE. SINCE THEN I'VE BROUGHT MY ROOMATES AND NUMEROUS FRIENDS IN. THE STAFF IS BUSY BUT AMAZING, SUCH GREAT UNIQUE AND INVITING PERSONALITIES. WE LOVE THE MALE WAITER AND HIS HUMOR. THE TWO MALE BARTENDERS ARE QUICK AND CHARMING. THE WOMAN ARE BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE, ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW THEM, WHICH MIGHT TAKE SOME TIME, BUT IS WORTH THE EFFORT. GOOD BAR FOOD. IT HAS AMAZINGLY DIVERSE PATRONS AND DEMANDS THAT WE LEAVE OUR DIFFERNCE AT THE DOOR, OR MAYBE ITS JUST THE STRONG DRINKS THAT MAKES US MINGLE. SODA BAR UPHOLDS THE IDEAL, OF WHAT ALL US IMIGRANTS CAME LOOKING FOR, AS WE PACKED OUR BAGS AND HEADED TO NY CITY. Pros: ITS SODA Cons: IT CLOSES more

Worst server ever! 8/6/2006

I used to live down the street and would stop in to Soda a couple times a month because I really liked the place. I hadn't been there in a few months until this weekend and things have certainly changed. The bartender told us we had to sit at a table and somone would be over to take our drink order. The guy finally showed up at our table and asked us if we wanted menus too, we said yes and he immediately walked off without asking us about drinks. He gave us menus and took off again. We had to wave him over to put in a drink order (this was after being there for close to 20 minutes). He took my drink order and walked off - without asking my boyfriend what he wanted. They have a good happy hour deal as my beer was only $3 but somehow my boyfriend's drink of a vodka tonic(he was able to order after I got my drink) was $10. Looking around the place it seemed like others were having the same frustrating experiences with the wait staff. I'll never return. Pros: $3 drafts during happy hour Cons: slow, rude, unattentive service more

unpleasant staff makes it worth avoiding 2/5/2006

Multiple visits with friends who live in the neighborhood (and have learned to avoid this place) have finally convinced me it's not worth it. You can get a seat, but don't expect to get served for at least a half an hour, even when it's only half full. Horrible disappointment. Pros: looks cool Cons: unfriendly staff, bad service more

great bar 1/29/2006

I've been living in this area over 3 years and Soda has been always great! I have to say that I used to like it more before because now it's packed every weekend. Even though it's packed Soda still fun and you can eat late too! Pros: Food more

oh the douchebaggery 12/7/2005

A friend and I have been going to Soda on Wednesdays for months now. The bartender is super nice. The food is ultra tasty. After tonight, I'm never going back. We get there, it's crowded, and we see group grab all their stuff and leave a table, so we grab it. About seven minutes later, the waitress comes over and, instead of taking our order, tells us the people sitting there before us might come back, and that we need to immediately leave. Since when do waitresses kick people off tables because the people who were sitting there and left, MIGHT be coming back? If the people who were sitting there came back and said something, that'd be one thing. But the fact that the waitress came over to tell us to leave after making us wait, is ridiculously insulting. Pros: food, drinks, bartender Cons: waitress, waitress, waitress more

Solid Choice 7/6/2005

Soda's hard to beat for those of us on the other side of Flatbush. Great burgers, good music and a good selection of oddball beers. Service can be a bit slow at times, but never surly or arrogant (this is coming from a once-a-week regular). The pool table is gone, but the patio is great while the weather lasts. Meanwhile the lounge needs a change. It's either: A) Stuck on the same song in repeat. B) Blasted by DJs C) A distant third-place overflow spot, after the patio and the bar. Pros: Burgers, Beer, Window nook Cons: Lounge more
