The Scene
Located on the Utah-Wyoming border in extreme northeastern Utah, the 91-mile reservoir that now backs up behind the dam stretches to the Wyoming city of Green River and boasts an outstanding fishery for lake trout, kokanee salmon, and other species. The land surrounding the reservoir is home to extensive wildlife, including elk, deer, moose, bear, cougar, and others. Below the dam lies a world-class tailwater fishery. Floating the 7-mile stretch from the dam to the Little Hole takeout is a popular day trip for anglers. There is a trail on the north bank of the river between the dam and takeout for those who prefer to walk. Either way, the fishing is justifiably famous, though it can get crowded on weekends. Numerous guide services work the area and can help you hook into some fish.
Where to Camp
Campgrounds abound in the recreation area, but if you'd rather not pay, there is dispersed camping just about everywhere you look. Just pull off a Forest Service road, set up camp, and enjoy. There is no camping on the stretch of river to Little Hole or at Little Hole itself.
