I've been going to the Cafe for both lunch and dinner for the last few months as I recently moved to Sewickley. I got a recommendation from a stranger when I was in Buggers the on...

Do it right and it is a great experience! 9/2/2008

Well, I read the other reviews and can understand some of the negatives. The Waitstaff and Chefs do change; some of the waitstaff are younger and perhaps inexperienced. Especially at lunch time, the place does get crowded and food/service gets hectic.\r \r Personally, I have had very good experiences with the place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you become a ""regular"" and are paying by Credit Card, tip the waitstaff 10% and then leave them the extra tip in cash. Tell them that the IRS automatically assumes that they get 10% tips and the ""extra"" cash tip is net money to them. Regardless of whether they know the IRS Rules or not, they will remember you next time and your service will be prompt (this works in any restaurant). As mentioned in the Post-Gazette a few months ago, the new tip level is moving to 18% so keep that in mind too.\r \r Though the Cafe has a wine list, they still allow you to bring your own bottle in with just a ""Stem Charge"" of $5 per glass. For a person who brings their own wines in whenever they can, this is a great deal! It also helps to offer a small sample of your wine to the waiter/waitress, the Maitre de and the Owner, if he is there. Again if you do this, they will remember you when you return and your service will be excellent.\r \r Keep all this in mind and give the Sewickley Cafe a try! more

Lunch and Dinner Yes! Breakfast No! 7/29/2008

I eat out on a very regular basis and am grateful the Sewickley Garden Cafe is so conveinent for my lifestyle. The menu is nice and creative without being ""too creative."" Sometimes the service is a bit uninspired but not worth avoiding for. The brie with apples is truly wonderful and large enough to share with the table. Their catering is also very capable and worth considering while planning a party etc. \r \r I encourage people to go for lunch & dinner but not breakfast though. The waffle is seemingly not freshly made. The serving of breakfast on the weekdays at least seems like an let's be open while we are prepping for lunch since we are here. The owner isn't present during these hours so maybe the lack of inspiration is because he hasn't seen how the food is coming out.\r \r Overall it is great for groups because of the diverse menu and range of entree prices as well. Enjoy! Pros: Lunch and Dinner Cons: Breakfast more

Up& Down: mostly Down 7/11/2008

When this cafe opened, approximately 12 years(?) ago, it had a few glitches. After a few months, they seemed to work out the kinks and it was a nice place to be:comfortable, nice little meals, a sweet cafe.\r Like many restaurants, food quality there goes up & down. Unfortunately, ""Down"" seems to be its permanent resting place. The last good meal I had there was in about 2001. I still go there now and then- maybe once every year or two, hoping it will be good. But it has not been good for many years. The house soup""tomato dill"" tastes like campbell's soup with a few pounds of added sugar and a bit of dried dill. Plus, the general atmosphere has become gross: dirty, smelly, unpleasant. Pros: hope springs eternal Cons: bad food, unpleasant atmosphere, more

a total miss...poorly executed food! 4/11/2008

I've gone to that place far too many times because it's only one of a few restaurants in Sewickley. The atmosphere is charming with lovely outdoor seating ( the only reason it got two stars instead of one) but the food really misses. It's a shame because it wouldn't be that difficult to pull the sort of a menu you would find in a little cafe in the south with homemade goods. My husband and daughter were there recently and my daughter ordered a flank steak med rare. It came back like shoe leather. They sent it back and the chef refused to cook another one and said that's the only way he could cook flank steak. Everyone should know that the only way to EAT flank steak is med rare!\r They ended up paying the bill and just leaving. Some things on the menu look like they would taste good but just don't measure up...they just have the wrong idea for this place. I would love to see someone take over and re-do the menu with a new chef. The only thing they have going for them in my opinion is their tomato dill soup. Other than that, please don't waste your time. Pros: outdoor seating Cons: poorly executed food more

IM WRITING IN MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE CAFE' I WORKED FOR THIS MAN FOR THE PAST 7 MONTHS. 2/23/2008

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE CAFE' HAS BEEN A JOURNEY. I WANT TO ADD HAS BEEN A TRUE LEARNING EXPERIENCE . IT WAS THE DIRTYEST RESTURANT I EVER WORKED AT. THE SIDE DISHES THEY SERVE YOU ARE NEVER FRESH. THE COOLERS IN THIS RESTURANT ARE BEYOND NASTY. THIS IS THE ONLY RESTURANT ULL SEE FLYS IN THE WINTER.. THE BATHROOMS UD BE SCARED TO USE THERE BARELY EVER CLEANED AND THE OWNER EXSPECTS HIS WAITSTAFF TO CLEAN CUZ HES SO CHEAP HE DONT WANNA PAY FOR A PROPER CLEANING CREW. THE TABLES ARE TOPPED WITH BROWN BAG PAPER AND CLOTH NAPKINS THAT SEEM TO MAKE THINGS FINE DINING. YET THE TABLE CLOTHES ARE DIRTY AND ONLY GET TURNED MAYBE ONCE A WEEK. WORKING FOR THIS MAN I REALIZED FOR EACH THERE OWN, THERES NO EQUAL AND IF YOUR A MAN U GOTTA PLUS, SOME EMPLOYEES PAY FOR THERE UNIFORM SOME DONT, SOME GET OFF THE HOOK FOR COMING TO WORK SLOPPY N DIRTY, AND I MUST ADD HE DOESNT EVEN PERMIT HIS OWN EMPLOYEES TO PURCHASE A MEAL AFTR A SHIFT. SO OVERALL THE OWNER HAS ISSUES WITH HIS IMAGE MORE THAN THE OVERALL PICTURE OF HIS RESTURANT. AND BEFORE U KNOCK THE SERVER LOOK AT THE BIG BAD WOLF THAT SHE/HE HAS TO ANSWER TO. HE'S KNOWN TO FIRE FOR NO GOOD REASON. AND OVERALL THIS RESTURANT IS A CAFE' THAT HAS HEALTHY FOOD STORED IN UNHEALTHY CONDITIONS IS BEYOND DIRTY, AND FOR THOSE THAT STILL REMAIN WORKING 4 HIM LET IT BE KNOWN UR NOT APPRECIATED FOR ANYTHING YOU DO. \r more

Belgium Waffle - looked like Belgium at the end of World War II 8/20/2007

Arrived Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. Should have known something was up since we were the only 3 customers in the Cafe. After two inquiries and 10 minutes we got cream for our coffee which already was warm and weak. After spotting the cook with his spiffy white uniform on I figured that the Belgium waffle listed on the menu would be great. However, it arrived burnt, crystallized and about 1/4"" high. I was ready to say something but my wife gave me ""the look"" so I kept my mouth shut. We asked for some ketchup and when we're halfway through with our meal the waitress brought out a tiny plastic cup with about a teaspoon of ketchup in it and said that they were getting low on ketchup. I asked if she was kidding (she wasn't), but said she would go back and look for more and eventually brought out 2 tiny cups filled to the brim. (we were almost finished with our meal). Other than the sausages skin falling off (boiled before frying), and a little skimping on the toast (1 slice per meal) my wife and son's meals were fine, eggs, omelet etc.. When the waitress asked how everything was, I looked at my half-eaten waffle and told her it was the worst waffle I had ever been served. She gave no answer and asked if I wanted the check. The check came (fastest thing she did all meal) and sure enough the waffle was still on the check. I paid the bill and even gave her a 20% tip. Reason being that in these cases of poor service I blame the owner for not training his help properly. Also, the cook should never have let the waffle out of the kitchen. We travel all over on the weekends looking for good breakfast stops. Alas, this is one place that we have crossed off our list. Pros: parking, ambience Cons: service, food more

Absolutely Pathetic....stay home and you'll be better off. 7/7/2007

It all started out looking promising. We were seated promptly in the main dining room (they have a patio too). Unfortunately, our waitress didn't show up for about 10 minutes. My patience was waning. I ordered a lemonade and my wife stuck with the water (which tasted like salt water). After another 5 minutes, the waitress came back (without my lemonade) and asked to take our order. I ordered the Black Bean Salsa Wrap with Steak and my wife ordered the Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Brie. My lemonade finally showed up about 5 minutes prior to our lunch, which took approximately 25 minutes to prepare....I'm puzzled as to how that can be. Nonetheless, we dug in. I was disappointed to find that my ""Black Bean Salsa"" Wrap completely lacked black bean salsa. Instead, the cook must have used some jarred Chi-Chi's salsa, wrought with soggy tomatoes and peppers. Additionally, the shredded cheese most certainly came pre-shredded in a bag. The steak was extremely tough and lacked seasoning. My wife's Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Brie delivered the Brie, complete with rind. The sandwich also was supposed to contain asparagus spears, which it did....2 whole anemic spears on the whole sandwich. Overall, I'd avoid this place like the plague. You can buy the same ingredients at the store and make the dishes at home (maybe cheaper) with signficantly greater flavor. Parking is street only (meters) and the inner dining room does not have A/C, so we sat next to a huge fan. Overall, I was very disappointed with the Sewickley Cafe and cannot begin to understand other reviews about this place, except the one regarding the poor service. Just don't go! Cons: Food lacks freshness and taste, parking, no A/C in dining room, service was slow more

Try the Tuscan Chicken 9/27/2006

This comfortable restaurant in downtown sewickley can't be beat.. i went there for my second time in the past year and love the changes they have made.. We went in for dinner on a Wednesday night and sat in the garden and had a nice bottle of some french merlot.. wine list is different for perfect combination selections.. service was great and food was amazing.. carrot cake to split and cofffee after meal.. *licks lips definitely will be back and highly recommended..\r \r Pros: delicous meal and service Cons: Parking in town in afternoon gets a little crazy, bring quarters.. more

Worst service ever! 9/10/2006

The service was terrible! I was not offered a refill on my drink at all. I was ignored by my waiter and the manager was less than helpful when the waiter ran my Visa with the wrong check!\r Over priced for the amount of food given. Small space, I felt like i was sitting on top of the table next to me. Pros: nice neighborhood Cons: parking, wait staff, the space is so cramped more

Great Service, Great Food, Full Bar 8/24/2006

Recently remodeled interior gives the Sewickley Cafe an elegent look with the walls covered with local artwork. the romantic indoor lighting makes it the perfect place for a nice night out with your spouse. The outdoor garden has a classy look and fully furnished with carpet that would make any restaurant proud. The food is worth every penny although expensive. Everything is made fresh when order is placed. No precooking here. I suggest for lunch a Lynn's Wrap and for dinner a strip steak with roasted potatoes and sno peas. Recently added full bar with a wide selection of wines, liqours, and beer. The service is unbeatable which makes your experience twice as good. In my opinion a very upscale restaurant and one that gives Sewickley a good name. Pros: Service, Food, Setting Cons: Price more
