I've lived in Oxnard for twenty years, and et plenty at Sal's.
Even when he was alive, I was never very impressed with the food in his joint. Having grown up in El Paso, eating there seemed like a very whitewashed affair. Their fajitas were decent, the beans and rice run-of-the-mill, and the chile colorado dry and powdery.
I've heard that since Sal's death it's gone downhill, which only decides me further to avoid the place. I live in west Ventura, and have these wonderful little down-home restaurants which, while not fancy, dish up great food at much better prices.
